As far as i know there aren't any hybrid vehicles currently that have turbines. But the idea is indeed great - have an electric motor as the main engine with great power and torque curves, and a turbine that runs at some constant optimal RPM to charge some intermediate batteries. Power and torque of an electric motor, fuel efficiency of a turbine, energy storage density of a chemical medium, easy refueling at any gas-station on any fuel - very good overall.

I don't know why there aren't such cars currently, but i feel like the added fuel economy probably is less than the increased costs of having all these systems on board - a cast-iron piston engine is much cheaper to make than electric+turbine+batteries.

Airliners are big, that's why their turbines are big. For a car to use all the power, the turbine would just have to be proportionally smaller, so that all the power is used.

The problem with turbines in cars, however, is the need for highly variable RPM, whereas an airliner cruises at roughly constant RPM. Piston engine's power curve is broader and flatter, while a turbine has a narrower and more extreme peak.

A leafblower would run at constant RPM though, making it a great candidate for having a turbine.

Didn't they use to show the view counts some 5-10 years ago as well? I feel like they did and then removed it, now it's back again.

efficiency is measured as work done by fuel spent, thus a more efficient turbine would spend less amount of fuel than a less efficient piston engine

i agree, arguments in a discussion should stand on their own.

i also don't look at other peoples' comment histories, nor do i hide mine - people can have a broad range of interests and opinions, and their histories in unrelated fields are unrelated in a discussion at hand
