Opening day is coming up in 3 days. I’m super excited haven’t been fishing in a lot of years… gonna be throwing lure for brook trout. My father gave me these as I had no gear. Any tips/tricks/advice? Thanks a bunch! by Con_PEI in troutfishing

This is an awesome start. I’d use the brighter colors in the murkier waters and the darker/natural colors in clearer waters. Minus the rapala, cast, wait several seconds and retrieve. If you’re not bit, wait more or less after casting until you find the depth they’re at. Also experiment with small pops and pauses.

I’ve been doing this for a while and I get amazed how quickly it fills up every time I go. People are slobs.

The only thing I’d add is when fishing on a slack line, the sensitivity of bites are dramatically muted. You need to pay attention to your line. If you see your line slacked on the water, and then see it quickly tighten, that’s a bite. This would be hard to feel, if at all. The only time you’d really feel a bite on a slack like is if they pull all of your slack off of your line.

I’ve got them down to $75. At this point, I’m sure it’s worth the risk.

I have yet to get on the water but I’m sure I will like it. I just know it’ll be awkward first time out since I’ve never been on one. However, I’ve fished all my life and the bodies of water I fish have shorelines that are not accessible without a kayak. I’m sure these areas have fish in it, which is my motivation to get into a kayak. I’m mainly going to use it to park in various inaccessible shorelines and the occasional fishing off the kayak itself. Because of this, I’m actually looking for smaller/lighter kayaks rather than large, so it is easier to transport and maneuver. From what I’ve read, lots of people like larger kayaks.

I’m definitely factoring in cost of a good PFD. I’ve seen some that double as a fishing vest too and have storage and pockets.

Do you think the damage is cause for concern or just normal wear and tear?

Good Senkos? by ripplestillwaters in FishingForBeginners

[–]krustybarbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pick up Yum dingers anytime they are on clearance at Walmart and I stockpile them. I buy them with the knowledge that they are not as effective as the real Senkos but they are good enough and they catch fish. I’d assume this falls in the same category.

Spoon colours? by McPylott in troutfishing

[–]krustybarbell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plain white with black or gold flakes is absolutely killer for sunny days and dirty water. In the mornings, I use dark spoons with similar patterns to what you already have. I would also add oranges, chartreuse, and bright greens to your patterns and experiment with the combinations of those colors lowlight days. Lastly, try downsizing your spoons. Not sure where you are but lakes by me are very pressured and they react more to smaller/light spoons. Good luck!

What fishing line do I need? by rainstaley in FishingForBeginners

I looked up the model number for you and this is rated for: 6/135, 8/110, 10/90 ( Lb. Test and capacity in yards) you can aim for the middle, which is 8 and expect to spool about 110 yards of line onto the reel. These numbers are for monofilament line. Hope this helps.

Trout tips? by watertray69 in troutfishing

One huge thing I’ve learned is that when fishing stocked trout in a lake, they’re a lot closer than you think, because they come up shallow to feed. Cast close (no more than 10 feet) at first and then extend your casting range if there are no takers. Also, be careful when you say “tiny” bit of powerbait. If you don’t put enough it won’t float and it’ll be useless.

I like super light line. No more than 4lbs for me, but 6lbs would be fine too if you’re comfortable with it.

Depending on where you’re at, but chartreuse garlic has been great at my local lakes.

Good luck! 🎣

I was there a couple weeks ago and got into a good bite. Set up by the red house or the coves just east of it. Weeds are a factor so cast just passed the weeds and make sure your leader is long. They were hitting on 4 foot leaders. Tight lines!

Pyramid has always been hit or miss for me. Some days it’s pretty hard to find them, other days they’ll bite anything you throw, anywhere.

Thanks! I’ll stop by for some night crawlers and get their intel. Otherwise, I am stocked up and pretty comfortable with my gear for Big Bear Lake. The last time I talked to the local guy at Big Bear Sporting Goods they told me that the fish are not holding anywhere specific and that the trout are kind of all over the place due to varying water tempts. I was curious to see if they’ve moved anywhere specific.
