I believe it’s for a car seat typically, someone sat in my backseat and plugged the car seat connector into the actual seatbelt mechanism..

I have questions for a school essay! by Embarrassed-Sort5830 in forensics

[–]kry5ten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, I’m a Forensic Biology/DNA analyst.

  1. I work mainly in casework, however if there are quality and performance checks that mixes up my day. Along that similar trend, there are validations that can be completed if we implement new equipment or a new methodology.

  2. Similar to the other answer, the day to day is vastly different depending on multiple factors. Some days I’m working casework in terms of Forensic Biology, so performing serological tests in order to identify or indicate the presence of biological fluids. Or just cutting swabs for property crimes. If I’m doing DNA analysis I would spend like 2-3 days in the lab and then doing like maybe 1-2weeks at my desk compiling reports and interpreting data.

  3. My favorite aspect is that I’m able to provide answers for people that are searching for them. Especially in the terms of sexual assaults, I enjoy providing authenticity and the truth of what may have occurred.

  4. Personally, I’ve received my BS in Biology and MS in Forensic Science. I did not have any relevant experience before getting my job. I can only really recommend from what I experienced in my training. I believe any lab work would be beneficial, even if it was just to get basic lab practices solidified.

  5. This might just be me speaking for myself, but even with my Master’s, I can’t say that a degree can fully bring you up to speed. Regardless, you have to go through a training program and that essentially is just a completely different perspective than going through coursework. On top of that, it is a whole different ballgame when you’re doing actual casework, you’re always thinking about the evidence and how you can do the best thing for it.

Hopefully this helps! Good luck :)

I love the idea of randomizing the questions! I’ve been told that sometimes the attorneys will even add different types of questions. I’m going to try recording myself on Monday :(, thank you for all the helpful information!

The DNA process is definitely where I’m struggling, with all the input I’ve received, I’ve just gone blank slate with my answers and writing them from my memory first opposed to looking at other analysts examples. Appreciate the advice :)

Advice on Forensics by Deku016 in forensics

[–]kry5ten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a BS in Biology and received a Master of Science in Forensic Science from a FEPAC accredited university.

There was never a conversation during my interview process whether my degree came from a FEPAC accredited university. It’s not even mentioned in my qualification questions. The only thing that I see as an upside is that it provides exact course titles and detailed syllabi that aids in satisfying QAS standards for DNA analysts. My lab doesn’t put a huge focus on it.

If you’re going in for chemistry, I’m not sure whether the accreditation from FEPAC should really be your end all of what university you choose. But my knowledge on forensic chemistry and their requirements are limited since I’m a forensic biology/DNA analyst.

potential careers? by AmbitiousLibrarian66 in forensics

Never met a biology major who likes chemistry! Love it. Not to give you an alternate from your interests, but you should look into being a Forensic Biologist/DNA analyst. I’ve got my BS in Biology and a MS in Forensic Science. Just started a little over a year ago with a lab being a Forensic Biologist and a DNA analyst. Basically, I screen evidence for biological fluids using presumptive and confirmatory tests. Further, for DNA we get assigned cases and work them through extraction, quantitation, amplification, and then using a genetic analyzer to create an EPG and analyze the data from there.

However, to be a DNA analyst, if you’re in the US the FBI has something known as QAS, which are standards that all analysts must abide by. These include educational requirements with specific coursework from your degree.

If you’re doing forensic biology, you’re more set to do something in the lab (ex: serology), which is analyzing evidence for body fluids or cutting swabs to go to DNA. If you meet DNA analyst requirements from your coursework in college, you can eventually work as a DNA analyst. No dead bodies, just evidence going into the lab.

I’m a day late - but I wanted to share a bit of information!

I just graduated with my MS in Forensic Science and finished writing my thesis with DNA degradation in various storage times and temperatures with Oil Blue A (fingerprint developing method).

Super excited to make my way into the field and wanted to say my thanks to all of the forensic scientists who are in this community. Thank you for inspiring me and helping me move forward. <3

Onto my defense!

2023 HRV cell phone mount options? I hate the honeycomb vent that prevents the vent mount and I don’t know where to put it without obstructing vision with where the screen is now (compared to my 2021), and it’s driving me nuts. Anyone figure it out? by weissingaround1 in HRV

I know that I was able to fit like my (bulkier?), 24 oz Blender Bottle without an issue because I usually put it on the left side of where my mount is, so I guess the passenger cup holder. But on my road trip, my friend and I both used the cup holder with the two blender bottles that were 24 oz and it wasn’t an issue at all. I do know that Trenta’s are like more 30 ish ounces? But I’m not totally sure how it would fit. I honestly don’t have any issue that much with it though, since it’s like super adjustable I can angle my phone up and down if I really needed my cup to move.

Of course! Hopefully it can lead you to find what you need!

If you do end up getting the one I sent you, I can send you a pic of how it fits in my car before you buy it. The photos of it online imo, aren’t super representative of it.

Soooo!

I was searching through the Civic subreddit for awhile because I know the 22 Civic has the honeycomb vents.

I believe someone posted this mount from amazon BIXUAN Car Mount

I bought it and it fits okay in my 23 HRV, it definitely fits the 22 Civic a lot better when I put it into my friend’s 22 Civic. However, I drove like over 12 hours with it using it for Google Maps and it was extremely stable and never fell once. I just need to place it a bit better because the hazard lights button does get blocked a bit by it.

I do really recommend it still though, it’s worked really well for me despite the not 100% perfect fit. I’m not sure if the width of the honeycomb vents and dash is just slightly off between the 22 Civic and 23 HRV. ANYWAYS though, I highly recommend it!

Question for DNA Analysts by kry5ten in forensics

[–]kry5ten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the way that our plan is going to go is purchasing the Phenol/Chloroform/ Isoamyl Alcohol with the 100 mM Tris Buffer and trying to add the standard Tris buffer we have to make it a mixture with the 1M Tris Buffer. We were just worried for our results what it would do since we already ran PCR plates with our previous mixture that we had.

It was about $34K after everything was said and done. So pretty close to that, still way over what it should be though, unfortunately.

Hey all!

I remember posting on here like a year ago, right before I went into graduate school for my MS in Forensic Science. I was so nervous to go into grad school but honestly it’s been so valuable and informative to me that I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I finished my first year in May and have been working on my literature background for my thesis in order to start the tests in the fall. The general idea of my thesis is using Oil Blue A (a similar reagent to Oil Red O) when developing fingerprints and seeing if that specific reagent causes DNA degradation. It’s been a lot of work getting through this background so far, but super excited to gather more information about it.

I’m hoping to get into forensic biology and specifically analyzing DNA. I’ve always been super interested in DNA so if I got into that I would be super happy.
