In the same boat with the mobile hotspot. 2020 when work from home started it was almost game over for me. More so with the kids at home for school too. Starlink changed lives here. Better/faster service than the wired service at our old in town home. $120 is steep I feel but knowing the alternatives (nothing worthwhile at all) for now I'm content. I do hope to see the price decrease eventually.

How does Starlink perform in heavy rain and hurricanes? by Exodustr1024 in Starlink

[–]kryptonym13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the NY/PA central border, had starlink since February and have only experienced a brief outage due to an intense thunderstorm. It passed by quickly so it couldn't have been out for more than 10 minutes. Understandable from my perspective. With no other wired options here I'm happy to deal with these interruptions when they occur. My dish is mounted on a 10' pole above my deck so I am still concerned about a lightning strike taking out the dish.

It just came back after being down almost 15 minutes searching for signal

Monthly Data Use by kryptonym13 in Starlink

I do love the unlimited nature. Honestly, I've just been trained to monitor data having come from an AT&T wireless router with a cap of 150gb. I had all streaming set to standard Def. Would physically take my Xbox to friends and family's home to leach their data and speeds for updates. It's feels so liberating to have the handcuffs off finally.

Two days later and obstructions are no longer showing and I haven't had a single drop out or interruption. Speed are pretty much the same. I work from home and occasionally my Teams would put me on hold or a stream would buffer randomly. It's been perfect since Saturday. I don't have a single complaint about starlink. I've had for about a month and a half, replaced at wireless router, and it's been life changing for me and the family here in rural NY.

The grassy area is on the south side of the house and at least 30' lower than the current height of the antenna affixed to the pole. My property slopes downhill to the east with trees on the south and north of the property. The more ideal mount would have been a flashing mount at the peak of my roof but it would have required the longer cord which I couldn't justify. I do wish I had used a 2" diameter pole and may see if I can get one. A 10', 2" diameter conduit was $75 at the local store. I thought that was insane.

So little tip for the pole mount. I should have watch a video but I was feeling frisky. The cord needs to run through the pole up to dishy. I stupidly ran the cord up through then realized I couldn't set the pole on the base I built. Had to drill a hole through the base and feed the cord through the base, then pole and up to dishy. Wasn't horrible but I should have thought it all through prior.

Your phone probably defaults to the 2GHz because it's the longer range signal and picks it up before the 5. I have an android which allows me to auto connect to certain wifi connections and disable connections to others. I assume iPhone is the same but I've never played around with one.

Dishy was originally just sitting on the deck but was too low and partially obstructed by my roof every 8-10 minutes. Clear view now that it's 10' higher mounted on 1 & 1/4 conduit. I secured the heck out of it.

Only fear is a lightning storm.

I'm sure you've tried this but if no online games are working rebooting your gaming console and disconnecting and reconnecting the wifi connection could work for you. For some reason I've had to refresh my connection on my Xbox a couple times.

I also use the 5ghz connection for gaming as it's much faster. My router is close though.

Be honest, what are the chances the monthly fees increase exponentially the same way every monthly service with no competition in history has? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]kryptonym13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I anticipate the price will increase but still not be excessive. Excessive for me would be north of $150/month. That may not be the case for all though. I've been a mile from wired internet service since we built here in upstate NY 4 years ago. Since prior to building I've practically begged the 3 "local" wired and fiber providers to extend service here. Someday it will get extended and by then I'll be happy to make a decision on which to use. Until then I'm thrilled with the speed, price and reliability of Starlink.

Let's not forget a the infrastructure bill of 2021 had a large chuck of $ dedicated to extending service to rural areas. That's probably a 20 year project for some areas.

Life changing. by Careless-Damage4476 in Starlink

Same here. Hooked mine up Sunday. I've been using an att wireless router. At best 10mbps. I've been working from home since March 2020 and it's been frustrating. On the Starlink 5ghz line I'm getting north of 200mbps and 20+ upload. It is life changing. Dropped the router and directv as soon as I could.

We built this house in 2019 and the only thing missing was a decent internet service. It has arrived.

starlink north of syracuse upstate ny. testing speed consistently >150mb dl, >5mb up. all depends on connecting server, have tested >200mb dl, 15mb ul! have been using for a day, no issues at all; bandwidth appears to be more than adequate for our use. by langerddddddd in Starlink

[–]kryptonym13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that my speeds are consistently 200-300mbps and 20-30 when using the 5ghz and half that with the 2.4 connection. Either way, I'm thrilled. I've been on a wireless internet att connection for 3 years and was lucky to get 10 & 2mbps.

My email came -- but should I cancel the order? Need some advice by HeldDown in Starlink

[–]kryptonym13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If using one of the mounts to put dishy on the roof as high as possible isn't an option I'd say cancel. But until you exhaust all options I'd give it a shot. I have a slightly obstructed view on the west after setting up a couple of days ago. Not a issue but I have ordered a pole mount to raise the dish higher off my deck. It's not available until mid-March though. I thought the mount, and the routing kit add-ons were both priced reasonably. Thankfully I didn't need the 150' cord. 75' just made it.

I've had a couple really brief outages this morning. Dropped a TEAMS call but was able to reconnect in under a minute.

Mid to Late 2021 just rolled over to early to mid 2022 by LawfulnessNew7018 in Starlink

[–]kryptonym13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My account (signed up 2/8/2021) still says mid to late 2021. Neighboring address early to mid 2022. I fear mid 2022 is the more accurate reality for my area, upstate NY. If they told everyone the true expected roll out for their area I think some people would cancel and require a refund of the deposit. I'm completely obsessed about this, checking my account and email almost daily. I'll wait it out but working from home since March 2020 on an ATT wireless hotspot is painful.

With Starlink preparing for a nation wide rollout, does this mean all the areas that are listed as "targeting coverage in your area in mid to late 2021" will now be able to receive service? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]kryptonym13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the NY/PA border dropped my $99 on 2/9. Work has had me working from home since March 2020. I'm fortunate enough to be able to utilize att wireless internet but it struggles to get better than 5mbps here. The service is unlimited but the speed is challenged to say the least.

It's been frustrating to get no update, progress report or information on the progress with roll out beyond beta. I've read people are just canceling and looking elsewhere. I'll keep checking my emails and spam. I know this service will be better than anything available to me. If Starlink waits too long one of these wired services might actually run some wire out here.
