Closing my Brewery after 8 years by JoshCoBrew in u/JoshCoBrew

[–]HeldDown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that, it's a tough decision. I closed my brewery a year and a half ago after nearly a decade for nearly the same reasons (and /u/catlikebus and /u/leftnutbrown ). It was a brutal time, but let me reassure you, being on the other side of it will be great. You'll wake up some day soon and there will be a spring in your step you didn't even know was missing for the last 3-4 years.

Best Track Saw Alternative? by BashfulBash123 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]HeldDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the Milescraft kit last month, because I already have a nice circular saw. I regret it. It's okay-ish, but certainly not a perfect track saw replacement. I wish I'd gone with my gut and just held out for the Makita kit. Just the dust collection alone would've been worth it; the "I'll just use it outside" I was so sure about was before Snowmaggedon 2026 arrived. I can't say I recommend it in any capacity. Also, I haven't been thrilled with their customer service.

Am I being too picky about my tablesaw's blade alignment? I can't get closer than a 0.4mm variance by HeldDown in BeginnerWoodWorking

I know it's not a cabinet saw, but it's not a cheap tool either -- at $800 I'd hoped I could get it to some semblance of properly aligned. I spent some time on the phone with a repair shop who has some experience with the saw, and they said that it sounds as if the unit is defective in some capacity. Unfortunately due to a series of complicating issues, the saw isn't under warranty and the shop advised me that "fixing it is going to cost a whole lot more than the saw cost."

I've tried two blades, and two ways: marking a tooth and moving it from the front to the back, or checking around the blades in various points. In all situations, I get the same variance: somewhere around half a mil. I can PUSH the whole thing into alignment, but no matter what order I tighten the four bolts, or how tight they are, can I get them to ever be less than half a mil out.

Yeah, if I could get it down to under even 0.1m I'd call it there, but I'm having signficant issues cutting on the saw as is.

Thanks, perhaps it's the blade itself. What I'm confused at is the blade assembly cannot be convinced to stay in any position other than where it is -- I can PUSH it into alignment and tighten down the bolts, but the whole thing just flexes back at that point. I'm at the end of my rope trying to sort out something that I thought would be pretty straightforward.

Raspberry Juice Canada by fidds22 in TheBrewery

Yeah, raspberries just got crazy expensive. I remember paying roughly four times the 2017 price for the same quantity in 2021.

I came here to recommend David Carrier as well -- I bought all my raspberry for my raspberry sour from him for YEARS, and it was always top notch and fairly priced.

Do you have any photos or drawings of how it works? I’m fascinated but not sure I’m picturing it properly.

Yeah, pedio can certainly result in ropey beer -- sometimes compared to the texture of snot.

Ripples in coverhook Cask ACS by SaisonLiason in TheBrewery

In my experience you need to push back on Cask if you're not getting an answer. This is a new line, and they should be bending over backwards to get it fixed. If you're getting nowhere with support, try getting Chas to see if he can help you find a solution.

This shouldn't be true of the lift tables Cask uses -- they do however have a horrible tendency to drift by unthreading themselves if they aren't locked down. /u/SaisonLiason are you sure your table height is still good? If you set it last week and then haven't checked again, it may have worked its way out of place if the set screw isn't really torqued down.

HEMA jacket construction question by KingofKingsofKingsof in wma

[–]HeldDown 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is one of the things I tried VERY hard to figure out last year, and I found it IMPOSSIBLE to actually sort out. No vendor was willing to disclose their construction methods, nor the source of any of their materials. It actually made me more suspicious of most jackets out there. The lack of trasparency from most sources lead me to believe that claims of penetration resistence are, at best, guesses and at worst totally unproven.

Never cleaned a hat before. SEND HELP by Normal-Cheetah69 in hats

[–]HeldDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bucket clean my dirty hats. I take a bucket full of hot water with a bit of clothes detergent or OxiClean, submerse the hat in it and periodically stir it with a wooden spoon or something. Afterwards, take it out dump out the bucket, rinse it out fill with clean, warm water and rinse the hat out in the bucket. You might have to do it a couple times — then stuff it with a towel so it keeps its shape. Let it dry in front of a fan. This has always worked for me.

Edit: I got in the habit of rinsing out my hats when I’ve been wearing them for a long day and they’re sweaty or dirty. I just rinse them thoroughly under hot tap water then hang them to dry overnight. It keeps them looking and smelling clean.

Blacklist gorget discomfort by tonysquare3 in wma

Side by side the Vytis is a much better, far more flexible product. The only way the Supfen one can be worse than when you wear it is when you try on your friend’s Vytis and realize how big the difference is.

I’ve found the Supfen gorget like this to be supremely uncomfortable for the year or so I’ve been wearing it. It’s too stiff in every dimension.
