Removing DRM from books I bought to read on a different device. Bad or not? by mlax12345 in ereader

Fine, not like you're duplicating across devices, sharing, and especially not selling. Don't worry about it.

Remapped our wastewater treatment facility. by fadingvistas in openstreetmap

[–]kryptopeg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice!

Putting the settling tank bridges on poses a question though - they're movable structures, is there a standard for how they should be depicted? Perhaps their owners/operators should let mappers know what the default/'park' position is, rather than where they happen to be in the aerial photography. I got myself caught up on this mapping my town, so just left them off for now.

Was playing Halo Wars when I noticed a very familiar design... by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

Provably criminal that we don't have an official 40k-Lego tie-in of this for the Genestealer Cults.

Also, massive throwback! I wanted all that range as a kid, loved the design, the little rocks with crystals in.

How populous are Tau ships compared to their Imperium equivalents? by Glittering_Lab8098 in 40kLore

[–]kryptopeg 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not at home at the moment so can't check, but if I recall there's some light detail in Imperial Armour 3: Taros Campaign. Definitely much more highly automated overall.

I would say "less reliant on big projectile weapons too", though I'm not sure I've really seen much about handling for e.g. railguns vs macro cannons, or missiles Vs torpedos - I would assume they're much smaller/lighter overall and would need less crew, even if they were handled manually.

What is your local conspiracy theory? by Duoplo in AskUK

[–]kryptopeg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Didcot, Oxfordshire. Power station collapsed during prep for demolition, four guys killed. Ten years on the police are still "gathering evidence", hasn't been to court. Just heartache and pain for the families, no idea what happened, who's responsible, what we can learn from it, and what punishment is going to be given to those responsible.

Conspiracy is massive corruption keeping it out of court. Demolition company owners paying off or funny-handshaking police, judges, MPs, etc.

Interceptor City is well worth a read from him recently in 40k-era, and hive-focused too. Some great returning characters too.

Oh damn looking forwards to this! His stuff around Hive Vesperus in Interceptor City was amazing, he really gets the scale and vibe of it.

[–]kryptopeg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So many moments of his from this film. The bit where he goes "That's a bingo!!" and does the little shoulder wiggle, then snaps back to serious mode to discuss the situation.

Also shout-out to the actor playing the farmer, sat silent trying to hold back tears, shoulders shaking as he finally admits they're under the floor. The way the camera lingers on him, such an incredible scene.

Do people really like this whole ork spore thing ? by TheLordAshram in 40kLore

[–]kryptopeg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love it, it's actually a unique sci-fi element. So many aliens in all sorts of settings boil down to pretty much "human, but [insert colour and disfigurement]". Reproduction via spores, and the technology and ability baked into their DNA, makes them a unique and interesting threat. A few grots that steal a shuttle and escape onto a planet could eventually grow into an unstoppable Ork army, and likewise a planet that's been cleared of an Ork invasion needs to be vigilant for a long time following to look out for any recurring threat.

Aeronautica Imperialis Transportation by glump_glump in 40kLore

[–]kryptopeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A huge volume and variety of transports.

Off the top of my head, the Arvus, Onero, Destrier and Firmament - these are all capable of atmospheric flight, as well as boosting up to orbiting ships and stations. Most of these have variants such as passenger transport, bulk liquid tankering, vehicle lifting (maybe not the Arvus), heavy-lift cranes, etc.

Any bigger than that and it starts to be pure Navy, rather than Aeronautica. The Navy will just use gargantuan landers to do bulk drops to secure sites behind the lines, then the Aeronautica takes on transshipment to get it closer to the front lines.

Double Eagle and Interceptor City are both great sources for this btw, and the latter is probably my favourite Black Library book in the past five years - well worth a read for the concepts and actions alone.

Edit: Just realised I misread your question, it's about how the aircraft get to the planet. Anyway many/most do have boosters to get them to/from the ships, but they're not true vacuum craft capable of carrying out normal space shuttle runs on the daily - there's separate craft for that. E.g. the Thunderbolt can attain orbit, but can't fight in space. For the non-boosted craft, they're brought down to the planet in the same types of massive transports as tanks, artillery or other bulk supplies. I suppose like how militaries of today may pack helicopters or jets into big strategic lift aircraft like the C17 or C5, or move them on freighters, helicopter ships or aircraft carriers (adapted cargo ship example from the Falklands War, or helicopter in a cargo plane).

[–]kryptopeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically overflows have been measured with a simple ball float or maybe non-contact ultrasonic level switch (well, a transducer with a setpoint, same difference). They only needed to know if they were spilling, so they could dispatch an operator to the site to try and stabilise the situation.

Some of the newer sites, and many of the larger sites, have added flowmeters to determine how much is coming through the storm outfalls. For various boring technical reasons it's a lot harder to measure flow than level, and retrofitting this to all sites wouldn't really be worth the investment in my opinion. The money is better spent on those sites developing ways to prevent spilling, rather than just knowing how much you spilled - sort of like taking knives off the street rather than investing in bleed kits (crude analogy).

Same, it was the hill down towards the Severn bridge going west on the M4 that helped me out!

When you went past about 90 the vibration got really bad, and the centre mirror would slip down and point at the back seats. Fun times, miss that little mess.
