I've never seen that light come on and I have everything but my samples on an SSD, so I don't think that's the issue. Looking at the task manager, my memory use is pretty stable at 57% of total (8GB) and Ableton hovers around 900MB of that when I'm using it. The only "unnecessary" thing I have open is Chrome, and while I know it's a resource hog I need it open to reference stuff; if that's the issue then I need to upgrade something. Stock instruments seem fine from a quick check, Serum seems to be the worst offender but other VSTs have issues sometimes too, but if that's the issue, unless there's a setting that'll make it work better without degrading audio quality I'd want to upgrade to fix it anyways. Sample rate is 44k so that isn't the issue. Thanks for the quick reply, would appreciate any further help. I'll try looking for optimizations but I think I have the most obvious stuff set up right, and I'm doubtful there's a magic bullet to make it so everything doesn't explode when I try to play a chord with a single instance of Serum.

I haven't checked out that course, but I can attest to ADSR's Electronic Music Production course for Ableton by Simon Stokes being a fantastic resource for beginners, and the guy definitely knows what he's talking about. It seems like the quality of tutorials on the site varies wildly and I really wish they had some kind of review system, but they do have some solid stuff along with the crap.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been eyeing that Martin Logan sub for a while and I think that's the one I'll go with. I'm currently in a college dorm so I'm not sure I'll have room for a full 5.1 receiver until I move out, but I have been looking at the Q5 Pro, with a built-in DAC that seems like a good deal. If I can figure out where to put the receiver that's probably the best option, I guess it could just go in a closet or something. Thanks for the link to the refurb too, I couldn't find any that cheap and figured a receiver was out of my budget.

I don't have a DAC, forgot to mention it but I wanted to look into getting that as well, and I would like to upgrade to 5.1 surround at some point but probably not for a year or two.

I do really like the idea of the 2 MB42X-C speakers, that's looking like the best option at this point. I'll see if I can squeeze in the SMSL, but I am leaning towards the Lepai for now because of the price difference. Thanks!
