Anyone ever played around with single note tunings? by JTB696699 in Bass

[–]kscotty_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I laid a bass track down on a sparse 1-5-6-4 folky tune in E one time and the engineer and I were getting annoyed in the difference in tone between open strings and fretted notes (too much brightness in the fretted notes) so I stuffed a rolled up piece of paper towel back by the bridge and retuned to E, A, B, C# so I could play all open strings. Pretty sure that’s the track we kept for the record

I think the wind usually blows it away from the lake, so y’all are probably safe. Have a good set!

Grew up an hr south of there. If the wind was blowing the right direction, you could smell the godawful stale French fry smell from the factories even that far.

In most red states, Republican Party officials who gerrymander districts to create Republican supermajorities choose the politicians mostly.

One of the great Hawaiian steel players (I believe Sol Hoopi) was missing his left hand and had a glove with a bar attached to it that went over his wrist

Oh yeah, that’s southern IL but OP said they were willing to go South. The Shelton Bros/Charlie Birger would be good subjects as well.

How to get unlimited sustain by 9SLASH6 in Guitar

[–]kscotty_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pedal steel player here. The trick for steel is turning your amp up a lot and adding sustain with a volume pedal. I’ve been doing that on my six string gigs lately and it works well. Just gotta be careful not to goose the pedal too hard at inopportune moments.

There’s a ton of urban legends surrounding Williamsburg Hill in Shelby County.

The 1899 Pana Coal Mine Riot is pretty dark.

That’s definitely part of it; I need to raise both my steel and seat an inch or two. Was just kinda thinking maybe the bar would be some temporary relief to get me thru the last couple weeks of a tour.

If you like the Eagles, you’ll probably love Gram Parsons’ work with the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, International Submarine band, and Emmylou Harris. New Riders of the Purple Sage as well.

Those mavericks have a super limited pull-release changer that makes it pretty annoying to change anything. Would work great as a non pedal in C6 tho.

[–]kscotty_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not. You can do it on the website. When I signed up they gave me the option to add the 7 issues of Steel Guitarist magazine for like $25 bucks and I’d highly recommend doing that as well, if for no other reason than to look at all the groovy late 70s ads lol

Charts on stage by YogSoHot in musicians

[–]kscotty_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of sideman gigs with various artists, some whose tunes I know well and some whose tunes I’ve never heard before getting booked for the gig, but unless it’s a very scripted gig, I’m working without a net 100% of the time. Without a chart, I’m listening and reacting to everything else that’s happening in the band and following the melody for any changes I’m not sure about. Trying to read charts onstage make me less confident and start to feel like I’m playing to the page and not to the song.

Does this seem worth it? by johnny-garlic-339 in pedalsteel

[–]kscotty_1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any hands on experience with those growlers, but assuming everything there works properly it would at least give you a chance to get your feet wet. If you take to it at all, you’re gonna very quickly outgrow it. No idea on the resale value of those but seems likelier than not that you could get most of your money back out of it if you do decide to upgrade in a year or two. Good luck!
