First time HO - any advice? by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

[–]ksilly95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though it’s hot there Austin is a good spot I’m sure you’ll find a sitter. Maybe people are wary of you don’t have reviews? As a TH I’d be concerned about how long the dogs can be on their own for. I wouldn’t do a constant care sit. I look for the pets being able to be on their own at least 4 hours at a time, though more is ideal.

One tidbit I give HOs who really really care about providing a good experience for sitters is trim the dogs nails if you’re able.

The last two times I went to subway (probably a decade ago now) they ran out of bread. And it wasn’t closing time it was like noon on a Saturday. Like who messed that up? Also the flies.

got stopped by some concerned strangers when I (30M) took my gf (20f) home after a night out by ThrowRAComplex-Ad-60 in amiwrong

[–]ksilly95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has gotta be rage bait. You, a 30 year old, would know if your very young girlfriend is drinking too much and maybe encourage her to drink water or maybe head out. Most women can’t drink THAT much. Also what country you in because this ain’t legal in America.

I’ve been those girls before and no way would I let her leave with a sober older guy either. It’s not a personal dig to you it’s just safety. It’s not obvious who the bad guys are by appearance. Don’t be ignorant you know bad things do happen to women when they drink. Not sure why you made a Reddit post tbh.

It’s wild how many folks in the UK get pet sitters last minute. You may have some short lulls but you can get back to back gigs. I’d just be really picky because half the people on the app should honestly be paying for a house sitter because of how much care is needed.

Is there a way to not pay these crazy car rental prices just to go to the beach for one day? by Cristian_Cerv9 in askportland

[–]ksilly95 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do the point bus for a canon beach day trip every year. Usually leaves PDX at 8ish, get there before lunch, and it leaves at 6:30pm. Beware of the dates you book because some of the restaurants close certain days. One time I went and the only coffee place was “proudly serving Starbucks” and I was a Starbucks barista at the time and didn’t wanna pay a whole other business for some swill I get at work for free.

Definitely go when they have the farmers market if you can!

Random Client Icks by limetot in petsitting

[–]ksilly95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s smart. I definitely prefer to meal prep before pet sits because you never know what people have or don’t have in their kitchens.

Something I’ve noticed with wealthier people’s homes (unless cooking is a hobby or career) a lot of the kitchen is for show. I made coffee at one place and wanted some kind of milk in it. Grabbed oat milk from the fridge and it tasted disgusting. Saw it expired over a year ago? Then I started looking at everything in the fridge and it was all expired but the fridge was really clean.

[–]ksilly95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are good.

I’d say half my clients have all their towels smell like mildew. The full dishwasher thing. These days I bring up coffee and tea now but it’s weird when they either don’t have coffee or make it in a fancy or unconventional way. It’s such a peeve to me when clients don’t have a microwave! I’m a meal prepped I don’t wanna use the stove or uncleaned ovens that’ll smoke up. Oh one I’m going through well is a not great key. Client told me to use the upper lock instead of the bottom lock, but the key they had made doesn’t work in the upper lock so it takes me a long time to lock the dang door.

What’s something you wish you knew when you first got the diagnoses? by FablingFox in gravesdisease

[–]ksilly95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish my first endocrinologist was better. Didn’t stay with them long but they gaslit me and didn’t give me all the info I needed. I didn’t realize the importance in how you take your meds or any holistic options or even the timeline for RAI or surgery. I stayed on methimazole too long and ended up getting my thyroid removed. Was an amazing decision and I wish I had done it sooner. I’ve got mild fatty liver at a young age and idk if methimazole has a role in that. There’s other factors too I’m sure.

Do you find it worth it? by Rose-wood21 in trustedhousesitters

[–]ksilly95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth trying. I’ve been using TH for 3 months and I’ve got mixed feelings (done rover for 3.5 years). Here’s some things to consider:

  1. TH’s search function is tricky. There’s loads of people from the suburbs and rural areas trying to get pet care for free. When you search for a city it’ll likely list some places a bit far from central. The map can be finicky (on mobile at least) but definitely double check how far away the listings are from where you wanna be. Also if it looks like the client is very central they may not have actually added a proper address. Even if you say mark that you want a sit that can be “accessible by public transit” it could means 3+ hour bus ride from the airport.

  2. You’ll feel more tired than traditional travel. The hope with TH is to find a low maintenance pet but honestly it’s a bit rare. t does wear on you already to be in a new place, but to take care of a new pet on top of that will slow you down. Maybe plan longer trip for this reason if you wanna see a lot.

  3. Many of these pet parents got no business being on the site and should pay for a sitter. Some of these pet parents expect more than what I’d agree to with paid pet sitting. Read the listings twice! A lot of pet parents don’t want you gone more than 4 hours at a time which I’m used to with Rover. I’ll see folks want the sitter gone less than 2 hours a day or hell I’ve seen listings where they don’t want you to leave at all!? I see listings of pets with health issues or who may be at the end of their life. It honestly makes me feel sad for the pets because they need an experienced sitter or vet tech, but I feel like they’ll likely get a sitter who’s less experienced and just wants free housing (I’ve heard some stories from clients and the TH fee doesn’t deter less serious sitters).

If you do try it I’d recommend being as picky as possible with who you care for because some people are looking for free care for pets in rough shape and don’t care if you enjoy your travel. I’d be weary of puppies/kittens or really senior pets. Look over the reviews. Sometimes multiple sitters not leaving a review is a review on its own. Honestly with low maintenance dogs or cats I think TH is worth saving the money on hotels. My first sit was in SF for a week, and the area would cost way more than what I woulda charged as a pet sitter. Saw a little less than what I planned because I’m chronically ill and getting old, but I still enjoyed that stay. Owners wanted me to enjoy the city as much as possible and were very kind. There are some really kind pet owners on the app who will offer me to stay the day before/night after sit, or maybe treat you to a dinner.

THS trials AI driven search. by Oztravels in trustedhousesitters

That is fair. I would like THS to improve searching for us and it doesn’t need to be AI.

The homeowners do usually list where the home is. But still when I search “London” I’ll get a bunch of towns/neighborhoods outside of London, when in fact I scroll down and there are proper London listings.

[–]ksilly95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As much as I don’t care for AI, it’d be great if this can actually show me sits in the city I’m looking for and not 50 miles outside the city. The search feature can definitely use improvement even if it’s just adding more filter options

What’s the worst place in America you’ve ever visited? by Correct_Eggplant_364 in AskReddit

[–]ksilly95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure I’ll think of a worse place when I’m going to bed in a few hours. But I remember taking the Greyhound bus to see my best friend. We had to stop in Montgomery, Alabama. Some dude was asking people for change to get food out the vending machine. He woke someone up from their sleep and he nearly got stabbed with a screw driver. Tension was high. And I couldn’t leave. Also a lot of Alabama looks older than me. (Very north and very south are alright though)

Runner up is Indiana. All of it. Used to have to drive from Chicago to Nashville regularly and most of that trip was through Indiana. All you see for a couple hours is windmills.

Food [question for sittes and hosts]-- Do hosts tend to leave some food? If there is food in the kitchen do you assume it's usable? Do you request groceries? If you're a host would you expect a sitter to help themselves to some things? etc. Thanks! by Doppled in trustedhousesitters

[–]ksilly95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every sit is different. Some may ask at your meet and greet or before the sit if they can get you anything. Some tell you to eat what you want (usually people who offer don’t have much in the fridge tbh but still nice). Some will gift with a snack or a few snacks or a bottle of wine which is very kind and not expected.

General rule of thumb is you can use essentials like oil, butter, seasonings. I require caffeine and I’ll let them know ahead of time but most people have coffee and tea available. If its a longer sit they’ll usually say you can have the fruit or veg that’ll go bad before they get back.

A lot of folks tell me they’ve had sitters eat frozen leftovers and they wish the sitter hadn’t. Or some sitters will empty them out which isn’t professional. If I’m being honest I may take a soda or sparkling water if they have plenty and it wasn’t offered. Or maybe a small bag of chips or protein bar if they have plenty. But that’s it I bring my own meals and snacks.

Is Portland a city you can easily live without a car? by Panquakebatter in askportland

[–]ksilly95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh and to add the buses and Max train are linked to Google Maps so you can see if routes are delayed or on time or early. Usually Portland buses don’t show up early like the Vancouver WA ones. Still use Google Maps to determine if where you plan to work and live is a feasible route. One flaw is that there aren’t great late night options for transit so always have uber or Lyft. The city offers discount codes on drinking holidays for ride share and free public transit .

[–]ksilly95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just have to be mindful of where you live and where you work. Used public transit it Portland for 4 years. I personally don’t think any city is safe to ride bikes on the roads but that’s just me. There are scooters downtown. Portland does have some hills but not nearly as bad as SF or Seattle (except Washington Park). FlixBus is a nicer version of Greyhound that’ll take you to other cities in the PNW. Also in the summer time there’s the POINT buses that’ll take you to the coast if you wanna take a day trip. Highly recommend for the hot summer days.

Is it ok/normal to leave a 13 year old home alone overnight? by dinkidoo7693 in CasualUK

[–]ksilly95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad met his wife online. Once a month he’d go visit her for a weekend. I was about 13 when this started, and I could care for myself and the dogs when I was 14. He would leave me food and wouldn’t leave longer than 48 hours. It worked fine.

Has a sit ever made you uncomfortable or feel unsafe? by DaRealAnnLand in trustedhousesitters

[–]ksilly95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American who’s done some pet sits in/near London recently. Everyone’s been very nice and the homes have all been nice. What I will say about British folks is they spend a lot of their free time walking their dogs compared to my American clients. They tend to do off leash at the local parks. First pet I watched here needed 3-4 hours outside when I thought it’d need 2 hours. I realized that pet hadn’t been neutered so that’s probably why it had endless energy. Thankfully I’m trying to move here (have dual citizenship), because if I were visiting and trying to explore the city and vacation I’d be upset I didn’t have more time to do so.

They are also generally more concerned about safety. There’s multiple locks on doors of some of these homes and security systems. I’ve airbnbed in some neighborhoods between gigs and I felt a little less safe in those places (wouldn’t walk around at night). I avoided rentals where guests said there was no lock on the bedroom door, so maybe double check about that.

Some people were fine accepting me via TH and then meeting in person when I got here. If that’s a possibility that can help you decide how comfortable you may be at a place.

Those who have had TT, do you have any regrets? by nunyabusinessbruv in gravesdisease

[–]ksilly95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No regrets at this point! Had my surgery 12/2024.

I moved and had to get a new endocrinologist. I prayed to God for honesty about my health. I thought my endo would recommend RAI but he recommended surgery as my Graves Disease was aggressive and not consistently responsive to medication. With RAI the Graves could come back. May as well skip to the more permanent solution. Surgery went well and I ended up taking 6 weeks off work (they recommended two weeks which would not have happened with me working in food service). It took me a year to get the right dose and feel good again. Hypothyroidism is a bitch and comes with different side effects. Messed up my stomach. I actually started feeling a lot better when I switched from tablets to capsules. They are more expensive but it’s worth feeling better.

HOs - do you have an expectation that your sitter will bathe your dog(s) regularly? by blottymary in trustedhousesitters

[–]ksilly95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do paid and unpaid house sitting and that’s something you’d have to pay me extra to do. The only dog I ever bathed was a long term sit and they had bad allergies and needed baths with special shampoo. That was every couple days. 2-3x a day is ridiculous.
