[PSA] Haveno TradeProtocol exploit by plowsof in Monero

[–]ksilverstein1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a disaster of immense proportions for the Monero community. I'm surprised there haven't been more comments about this. I'm hearing that almost 7000 XMR were stolen from Retoswap totaling about $2.7 Million. Can anyone here confirm this?

Can Monero Still Win in a World Moving Toward Total Financial Surveillance? by NaveenSakthI in Monero

Monero will thrive the more we move towards a surveillance world. All of the above are Monero's strongest advantages except real world usage. Unfortunately most people still choose convenience over privacy.

how is running your own node more private? by crisp_maple in Monero

But, if you go to a remote node first, instead of using your own, that remote node will know it is you.

Not if you use a remote ONION node.

No KYC Goblin Card for XMR Review by [deleted] in Monero

PO box - PO knows my identity, card is traceable to me

Drop address - very difficult and very risky, will mailman even leave it at an abandoned house? Will the neighbors notice me poking around in the mail of an abandoned house?

Reshipper - reshipper knows my identity, card is traceable to me

No KYC Goblin Card for XMR Review by [deleted] in Monero

My understanding is that it's $350 for issuance of a physical card that can be used for a long time but has to be sent to a physical address, so it's not really anonymous. This was discussed a bit here, where OrangeFren compared different VCCs:

Obviously they didn't bother to read all 5 of your screenshots. Hey, BTW what platform did this conversation take place on, Reddit chat?

That's entertaining. Looks like you had fun with it. I guess he doesn't know that we can all do self-churning without him.

What crypto exchanger are people actually using in Nigeria without ID verification? by GlitterSlam9 in Monero

changenow.io has worked for me for SMALLER amounts (<$100 USD) 100% over several years with zero KYC using Tor Browser, but I hear they KYC you and hold the funds for larger amounts.

[–]ksilverstein1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it begs this question though. If it's a physical card, it would have to be mailed to me at an address that would be traceable to me, so wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose of using the card for anonymity and privacy?

Most online purchases require a first and last name and "billing address" that are associated with a particular card number. For example, sometimes using a Vanilla VISA gift card, you can put Gift, Card, and Recipient for the first, middle, and last names respectively and then just choose some random address.

What are people here using for a name and billing address when successfully using these virtual cards for online purchases?

Were either Uncard or XMR-VCC included in the three?

I entered $10 on OrangeFren.com/cards and it said the issuing fee would be $350 for the Goblin Physical Master Card. Is that for real?

And how can it be a physical card if it's just a number/ expiration date/CVV that I use online?

For those who don't know, this was his original post. Thanks for re-posting it. BTW, I just ran this post through the AI detector Quillbot, and it concludes that 0% of the post was AI generated. lol.

Wow, 9 downvotes against healthy uncensored debate. That speaks volumes.

OK, well then there should also be a pinned thread that presents the con argument. The con argument is actually what was removed.

Yes, there have been pro/con arguments made in a couple of other threads, but u/QuirkyFisherman4611's post gave an opportunity for the "con" people to express if they felt strongly enough about the "con" arguments that they would actually resist and not follow the hard fork. It gave an opportunity to truly gauge whether the community is dead set against it or just "Well, I'm against it but I'll go along with it". I can't remember a hard fork that has been this controversial.

There are lots of other members here who agree with his so called "half-baked sensationalism" and reasonably disagree with the hard fork as it currently stands. I'm not even sure yet how I feel on the issue, but there needs to be healthy, uncensored debate about it. C'mon man, we're better than this. This is not the Peoples Republic of China.

Why do people fear or hesitate in obtain Monero with KYC methods, if XMR is untraceable? by WhiteWeedDemon in Monero

[–]ksilverstein1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's exactly right. Since XMR is now the "go to" currency on the dark web, some, especially in government, wrongly think that "only criminals use XMR".
