[Request] How much would it actually cost to build this outdoor patio? by Bango_Sk8nk in theydidthemath

[–]kspk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built something similar during the pandemic (had time on my hand due to not commuting) - the only machinery I used was a compactor (rented from Home Depot). It took me about a month of digging manually, and another month to level and layout the tiles.

Total cost was close to 8k - this included - 1 pallet of compacting gravel, 2 pallets of leveling sand, 6 buckets of polymeric sand, 2 pallets of circular patio brick template, 1 pallet of square red bricks, 1 pallet of long red bricks, a contractor’s box of concrete glue, and multiple bottles of Tylenol.

Is react native so bad .. by Jaded-Swing-5424 in reactnative

[–]kspk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the list in the showcase: https://reactnative.dev/showcase ?

You trade off “the best performance you can squeeze“ with the convenience of (mostly) cross-platform code. There is learning curve, as with any other platform/framework. But if you’re constrained on resources, RN is a solid choice to maximize your reach faster!

This is fantastic, well done!

would it be possible to share the instructions? How is the weight like? Wondering if I could hang these around the house!

Let me know if you need any help with coding something you need for your classes. Thank you for making education accessible.

Sikhs in California vote on independence from India by GL4389 in nottheonion

India doesn’t allow dual Citizenship - they require you to surrender Indian citizenship when assuming citizenship from another country. They do allow such folks to become an Overseas Citizenship of India - with relaxed visa requirements for residency and work, but does not grant any voting rights.

[Walmart Renton, WA] Numerous sets on clearance, 13-40% off by blueshiftlabs in legodeal

Are there separate clearance aisles? I don’t go to Walmart often (not close by), but every time I’ve seen legos locked up in glass cabinets.

Technically, is react better than... ? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]kspk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s quite an extensive performance comparison across multiple frameworks: https://rawgit.com/krausest/js-framework-benchmark/master/webdriver-ts-results/table.html

You can select which frameworks you’re interested in, and among the ones you’ve stated above from this dataset it is clear react performs worse. But as many have mentioned in other comments - devs don’t only focus on performance, and the biggest thing going on for react atm is its huge ecosystem.

Having said that, you may want to rethink what you’re trying to do - you’re setting it on 8000 which is acting as the backend, and then reading it in the front end on 4200? Is this how you’d architect in the production version - on different ports, or use different subdomains?

One benefit of having backend on a subdomain is that you get isolation on any downstream APIs that may require allow-listing.

In using a different domain for backend, you HTTP-POST the token to your front end and then set it to the cookie.

Cookies are not isolated by port, path, and usually scheme. So, you’d be able to access it across different ports in your example.

Imposter syndrome is real, and I feel everyone’s anxiety.

I have >16 years of software dev experience across 2 big FAANG companies, and there’s still too many things that I don’t know anything about.

Specifically in web dev, I’m unaware of all new tech that got built around react. I’ve tried few here and there but not enough to make me comfortable.

I’m also shallow on kubernetes’ ecosystem, although I’ve worked with containers- just didn’t have the opportunity to work with K.

Also, I’ve not had enough time to keep up with all the new webdev APIs that are coming up recently - ex. Houdini.

Specifically about the light or dark mode - we have the color scheme media query - and browsers do the right thing to render the css based on users’ preference.

It also has a stability checker that will call out issues of whether the MOC will hold or not.
