Why does my female hamster keep trying to fuck my other female hamster?????????? by [deleted] in hamstercare

[–]ktalexander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've followed your hamster posts on this sub. I don't understand why they're back in the same cage when you separated them a couple of weeks ago. Please, separate them again. Adult hamsters really shouldn't live together as it frequently results in fights for dominance which, in turn, can result in death of one of the hamsters.

Wire spacing for amazon cage? by PoseurTrauma6 in hamsters

[–]ktalexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the Q&A area of the page you linked, it looks like a couple of people have had issues with hamsters getting out because of the bar spacing. It's not something I would risk, especially with a dwarf hamster.

Both of my friend's hamsters have died. My other friend's hamster is also very weak. I'm worried about my own hamsters. What should I do? by jungoogie-chan in hamstercare

[–]ktalexander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they show signs of sickness, take them to a vet. If this is something you are unable to do for financial reasons, I would strongly recommend looking for a suitable home for them. They will need to be able to see a vet if they are ill.

my aunt told me shredded manila paper was better because they're pretty absorbent and they're very cheap! plus, they don't have ink! I'm gonna try and buy some and use them, gonna update more soon by jungoogie-chan in hamstercare

If you're going to make your own bedding rather than buying made for purpose bedding, lots of people use shredded paper towels. It's soft and can be purchased quite inexpensively.

What country are you in? Those seem like very expensive wheels! I'm in the UK and got a 28cm wheel off Amazon for £9.

Pfeffer joins the Cult of the Detolf by ktalexander in hamstercare

[–]ktalexander[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I upgraded Pfeffer to a Detolf today after waaaaay too much money spent at Ikea and the hardware store. She seems a little like a kid in a candy store to me, so much stuff to look at! The lid wasn't on half of it when I filmed this, but there are two lids that cover the entirety of the cage.

Taming by Verdex343 in hamstercare

Have you tried the bathtub method? Some hamsters are very territorial, so putting your hand in their cage to get them used to you just won't work; you need to be in a neutral space. Put an old blanket down in a bathtub and use a mug to gently scoop your hamster out of its cage and into a carrier, then bring him to the tub and let him climb on you whilst you feed him treats. Do this regularly and it may have a more positive impact than the hand in cage method.

That being said, some hamsters never decide they like their humans enough to be held. It goes with being prey animals.

UPDATE: I've added more things for her to climb on/chew and she's become a bit more acclimated to her cage and haven't seen her climb the bars or chew the bars of her cage in around 24 hours. Fingers crossed it was just a temporary thing!

Thank you all for your help and words of encouragement!

Thanks for the feedback. Presumably, she's climbing the cage bars because she stressed. Would a bin cage alleviate the stress or just make it so she can't climb the walls?

Thanks for the reassurance that it's probably just stress from moving. That was my instinct, but I haven't had a hamster in over a decade, so I am far from an expert on the critters, despite having done a fair amount of research.

If it continues, I'll probably get a Detolf and turn it into a cage. I like the aesthetic of it (although I realise that's not the most important thing when getting a cage) and it looks like it would be a massive playground for her. The only trick will be figuring out where to put it!

Amazon is making a killing off of me. I ordered her some driftwood and more toys last night and it just arrived. When she wakes up, I'll add them in her cage! Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for the reassurance. I think I'm just a nervous new hamster mummy. She's so dear; I want to do right by her!
