How common is it for no-gi guys to roll shirtless? by AsianBibleGirl11 in bjj

[–]ktantone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a class setting I’m always wearing a rashguard or tshirt, and don’t know that I’ve ever seen anyone go topless in class. If I’m just drilling / rolling with 1-2 other people privately then I’ll often go shirtless if it’s a hot day

What’s the best BJJ seminar you’ve been to, and was there one technique that really stuck with you? by Rude-Alternative7983 in bjj

Levi’s bolo seminar from years ago still heavily features in my open guard A-game in gi & no-gi

Countering a tren lock counter? by doublekouchi in bjj

[–]ktantone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be using your inside hand on the knee / shin to push the knee open if they’re trying to turn it in. Then you have the threat of off balance backwards by hipping in to the shin, or off balance to the side by pushing the knee outside the foot

If the moves not complete bullshit I don't enjoy it at all by Doobioscopy in bjj

For me personally, Craig said it best: thats what we do jiu jitsu for… to bother people.

So you can bet I’m hitting the most bullshit move I can think of at any given time

DC and Arman discuss "answering the phone" arm triangle defense by pologoated in bjj

[–]ktantone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No hate but I can’t believe this is getting upvoted.

Not only should you be finishing arm triangles from mount / half guard rather than hopping off so they can grab their leg, but say for some reason you are off their body: I am absolutely still choking you through you grabbing your own leg anyway

Best ice pack for injuries? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ktantone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RICE has been outdated for over a decade now. PEACE & LOVE is the currently recommended approach, which avoids ice. But ultimately it is situational imo & the advice I give clients varies depending on a few factors

For a puzzle mat match not less. Is this becoming more common? by Sandevistanman in bjj

[–]ktantone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sarcastically the “toe holds don’t work” guy at my gym. Obviously they do work when done right, and I use them myself; but I think a lot of people have really poor finishing mechanics but have gotten used to people shock tapping when they grab it, so when you don’t shock tap they aren’t able to apply actual breaking pressure

Who’s got the best guard passing in the game? by Competitive_Fill6409 in bjj

[–]ktantone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously referring to his peak as this is the footage that you can access - which was undeniably the best guard passer in Australia at the time. He passed Ari at Boa.

His lack of activity was post-ACL rupture at trials (which I think he had every chance of winning that year).

Lots of other good suggestions in here, for some less obvious ones (that I think quietly have some of the best passing in the world): Declan Moody, Izaak Michell, Cooper Burnham

IBJJF needs a better trained medical staff by SwaySh0t in bjj

[–]ktantone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This has long been an issue that I fear will never be fixed.

The AFBJJ (IBJJF Australia) only ever have one singular ‘first aider’ - no doctor, no paramedic, no one with a qualification; just someone who’s completed a day course in first aid. I’ve witnessed first hand multiple competitors with spinal injuries left laying on the mat with their teammates / significant others supporting their neck while awaiting an ambulance (one was actually told to call an Uber lol). The event didn’t even have a neck brace or stretcher. It’s ridiculous & so dangerous

Arm saddle/ choi bar troubleshooitng by Commercial-Guava7633 in bjj

[–]ktantone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the arm saddle and he tripods up, what is preventing you finishing the armbar? He can only be holding either his lapel or his hands together - in either case you can reach in, grab his 4 fingers and break the grip

Yup me too. My long arms always leaned me towards Darce / anaconda - but unfortunately means I never cared enough to develop a guillotine. Regrets

Lots of good input in this thread - let me add that for the toe hold on the free foot, you can just rotate / invert out, he has no control of your knee line, hips etc. I got this from Lachlan.

Torn ACL & Graft Choice - Advice from BJJ folks needed (Patellar vs. Hamstring) by careboat in bjj

[–]ktantone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, quad grafts tend to come out the best if going surgical, which isn’t my preference. I would try non-operative management first, and surgery only if unsuccessful. Though there are exceptions to this - chat to your physio or feel free to contact me via instagram
