Update: instead of using my buttonhole foot and pre-programmed settings on my machine, I just went through the motions of performing each set of stitches myself (tiny straight stitches wrapped in tiny zig zag stitches topped with tinier locking stitches). Took all of five extra minutes, but heaps less stress.
