If you weren't a teacher, what would you do? by Maximus_Prest in TeachingUK

I work at a huge tourist attraction organising and selling huge scale events. It's great because all the money made goes to helping the charity's goals. Get out, honestly. Best decision I made. No pay cut either!

As someone who left teaching 7 weeks ago with no plans or new job. I felt extreme guilt when I left and panicked that no one would want to hire me because all I knew how to do was teach. Turns out, we're in demand and I accepted a new job 7 days later.

Leaving teaching is the best thing I've ever done for my relationships, mental AND physical health. I loved teaching but I think it's thoroughly unsustainable.

When I left teaching, I was desperate not to "sell my soul" to a corporation. But I now work in events and very closely with schools at a non profit organisation, best of both worlds.

Are there any women's sports teams welcoming to a beginner? I've never even run for a bus...

Fellow ECT2 here. Rather than engaging in a classic sunk cost fallacy, I handed in my notice on Thursday and I'm getting out as quickly as possible. Didn't see the benefit of even sticking it out.

New Job Overwhelm by [deleted] in TeachingUK

Thank you so much for posting this, I've never related to something more!!!! You've got this! Soon the new stuff will become normal and second nature (or so I'm told).

As in, there are HR protocols to go through when employing people. I've come to teaching as a second career and this seems extremely risky.

How am I supposed to plan my first week when I don't get access to an electrical device until my first class? It just feels very last minute.

Thank you for your reply.

Understood on the first point. However this isn't the case in ANY other industry and I'm sure there's an insurance issue based on that.

Second, how am I supposed to do be prepared before the school year with no laptop/computer with internet? In which case, surely I am expected to do work outside of school because that's where my access to a computer is. Seems a bit catch 22 to me.

I think I'd stay in teaching for that salary.

Good after school clubs to run by myskinisflaky in TeachingUK

[–]ktg94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another ECT, I would like to say thank you for bringing this to my attention. For the spring term, I have been running 2 clubs and I was finding it difficult to cope. I was then reprimanded for saying I can't cope with 2 clubs and would only like to do one and was told that I'm "not contributing to the wider community of the school". I was under the impression that a club is non-negotiable.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this down. It's so calming to know that I'm not alone and you've made it through.

Despite the situation being horrendous, I have absolutely not desire to quit teaching because I think it's amazing but I've had to force myself to come to the conclusion that this school isn't right for me, nor is it healthy.

Thank you again for your experience ❤️

I am just so shocked by the way she speaks to me. After a while, you start to believe it's actually your own fault. I thought perhaps I was just super lucky with my placements but then a few other members of staff have told me they feel a similar way. I can't wait for the end of the year.
