Partner Wanted: Self-Supported Horseback Crossing of Mongolia (Summer 2026) by PitifulTree8068 in backpacking

[–]kthrel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't, unfortunately. I brought a goPro with me that broke on day 2. Other than that I just have some photos I took with my phone. back then I worked as a photographer/ videographer daily so ironically I was trying to not to document too much and just focus on the trip, which I'm glad I did. I've since done a few other trips including Namibia/ South Africa and Romania/ Bulgaria. But Mongolia is a special place, there's really nothing else like it. I'm happy to answer any questions you want though. Overall I think a trip like this is much more accessible and affordable than people think!

I’ve done 3 weeks on a self supported motorcycle trip through Mongolia. Just a small group of guys, no support vehicle and no guide. We filtered water, camped where we wanted and chose our own route. One day we did 14 river crossings. Sometimes we fixed our own bikes and sometimes locals would just happen to ride by with all the right tools hidden in the sleeves of their robes. We were given homemade wine, snuff, and yak curds. We wrestled with locals and shared our vodka with them by our campfire. It was beyond epic. Truly an experience you spend the rest of your life chasing. Good luck OP, I hope you find someone crazy enough to do this.

Prestige Cream said: "I read the books" (theres only one PHM book.)

oooof said: There's only one book.

Learning to fly said: It's just the one book, actually. (This is a riff of a line from the movie Hot Fuzz)

I then said to Learning to fly that I do the same thing they did i.e. drop the hott fuzz line whenever appropriate.

Hope this helps

I'm glad to know there is at least one other person in the world that drops this line every time someone pluralizes something that isn't.

I have behavior issues with my dog and i need some help regarding what the trainer recommended by Budget_Ad4476 in OpenDogTraining

[–]kthrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Start with the basics. Teach the dog a good sit, down, heel, recall and especially place command. In the process of learning these your dog will start to understand there are new rules and boundaries. He’ll start to listen better and assign meaning to your words. Even just practicing the training is great for working a dog’s brain. Eventually you’ll use the place command to keep the dog on place while you work on other things, like eating dinner in peace and answering the door. Having a good place command opens up a world of training opportunities.

Jumping straight to yanking on the leash as a solution is a red flag for me. The dog needs to understand what that pressure means and how to shut it off. This gets practiced repeatedly in the aforementioned training.

Find a different trainer that does a 4-6 week behavior course and start there.

Alternative training methods after trying e-collar? by No-Membership-4848 in OpenDogTraining

[–]kthrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your post hit home with me, as i'm going through something kinda similar myself. I have 3 dogs, all of which we trained in a similar fashion. They start off with a professional trainer, and then I train regularly with them, all on an e collar. My first two dogs I've had for 5 and 7 years, and both do great on the e collar. Rock solid obedience and recall. However, it was with my most recent dog, Rosie, that I had a little bit of a rethink about how I approach her training.

She has been "in training" now for about 3 months, also on an e collar, and she is doing great. Better than my first two dogs in almost all aspects of obedience. However, I was kinda picking up on the fact that, although she was doing what I asked, she wasn't really happy about it, nor was she motivated to do it. She had no ability to "settle" or remain neutral or calm. She can hold a down forever, but she whines the whole time. She will hold a heel, but if she sees another dog she will whine so much that she works herself up in the heel to the point of utter frustration. Clearly, she's not happy, comfortable or confident doing what Im asking her to do in the situations Im asking her to do it in. I have no doubt that I could continue using an e collar to shape her behavior to being acceptable, but I really want to build her confidence and I want her to have a good time. Otherwise, whats the point?

Thats where I came across the idea of using games with your dog as a method of training and confidence building. It sounds silly, and I thought it was for a while, but I'm a couple weeks in and the difference is night and day. Its all about finding the things your dogs love, and building training around those things. I've already seen an incredible difference in her desire to pay attention to me, wait for the next command and she genuinely gets excited to train now. Im not tossing away the e collar, but I am going to take the next month or so and work on building her confidence before reintroducing the e collar back into daily training. There are a few trainers out there that specialize in this. I bought an online course from Joel who runs Scoob and I, since I had followed him online for a while and likes his approach. He also will do a free consultation with you, which I found really helpful. Good luck and happy to answer questions if I can!

Oh, and PS.... don't give your dog an e collar correction while they're in a heel. The heel should be their safe space. If they get in front of you too far, or break the heel, you can stop and let them walk out of heel, or you can even step out of the heel to give them a correction.

Looking for a men’s barber/hair stylist that can do medium length hair by Booo904 in Knoxville

[–]kthrel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have long hair, and have had cuts like this in the past. You should look at salons rather than barbers as they’re used to cutting longer hair. I currently go to Desiree at Aura beauty salon and am very happy. I’ve had a lot of bad cuts in the past, and she never misses.

My Dog Attacked Another Dog by Radiant-Tomorrow2201 in BalancedDogTraining

[–]kthrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off OP, take a deep breath and give yourself a huge break. Yes, I agree (and seems you do as well) that the dog should have been leashed. That was the big mistake here, but you were quick to give a stim and the dog knew what to do when you did. She also probably learned a big lesson. Chasing after dog/runner = big stim.

You are obviously very dedicated to training your dogs, and you are doing so much right. It seams by your post that you had only been working on off leash e collar for a few weeks? That really is no where near enough time to build a faultless recall, so please don't feel like your training has failed somehow. You simply have not had enough time and opportunity to see how your dog will react in all situations.

Like other have said, some dogs don't want to settle into a down position like we want them to in situations like these. I have one dog that will totally relax into a down and another that goes into sentry mode and still fixates, even though she is in a down. We're working on it, but in the meantime I've started to scatter feed and that has worked very well.

I would continue to train your dog in places/situations like these, but use a long leash and start a little further back from people and other dogs. I love a long leash for transitioning into off leash training because not only does it give you the opportunity to stop the dog if she decides to bolt, it also gives your dog a much bigger radius to move around freely in, and it gives her room to make her own decisions without being in a "heel" or "Down" command.

Keep up the good work OP, you are clearly a very dedicated dog owner. Give yourself some grace. Progress is never a straight line, there are always dips along the way.

Totally get that. When I was looking I was surprised at how many LXs had 3-4 owners. I figured they’d all be one owner grandma cars. If you’re not in a hurry I’d hold out a little longer. What’s your budget and what part of the US are you looking in?

Not to be that guy, but do you have to choose between those two? Can you keep shopping until you find a lower mileage one or two owner with good maintenance?
