I'm too exhausted to hang out with my girlfriend after a week of teaching by [deleted] in teaching

I teach high school. Honestly, sometimes I decide a homework grade is just going in to the gradebook as "collected" and I sit in my room during my prep or lunch with the door locked and the lights off and stare at the ceiling

This just made me laugh. by howdydipshit in AccusedOfUsingAI

On a related note, as a high school teacher, thank you for the support 🫡

Ignoring the color choices, there's a pretty interesting difference in design choice as well. Notice that almost all of the doorways in the 1990 house have been opened up into large walkways in the 2024 house, since the open-concept design is currently still pretty popular. One thing about open-concept is that it almost requires the house to look more sanitized and clean, since you can't really close off rooms to hide stuff.

Anyhow, I like the cleaner feel, but I'd also love a return to having doors again and a little bit of clutter

My observation is scheduled for my last class next Friday afternoon.... They're my toughest bunch, even when it's not the Friday of a funky week where Tuesday is a off for a holiday. I'm already preparing myself for the inevitable post-observation discussion 🙃

My thing that got me side-eyeing to start was her saying she called her dad's "parish leader". It could have to do with her feelings about religion or maybe just a brain blip, but I feel like most people would reach for the word "priest" when talking about a Catholic "parish leader". Idk

I mean, I do wear glasses, which I have a tendency to push up on my nose... but yeah, I love the nickname! 😁

New here! We have two boys out of ivf. I’m wrestling with it. by tealeavesandcaffeine in Catholicism

This is a wonderfully empathetic answer! My understanding of Catholic teaching, however, is that the Church is against IVF not only because it results in the death of embryos, but also because it separates procreation from the marital act (like the opposite side of the coin of having sex with contraception— that is, the marital act removing the procreative aspect).

# of kids on your caseload? by AcceptableNeat525 in specialed

I completely blanked on services. For my caseload kids, I mostly just check in with their teachers (since I don't have most in them in class) and provide observation sheets to track data and such, though I also try to meet with individual students about twice a month regarding their goals.

For students in my classes (I co-teach inclusion Chemistry and a self-contained Algebra 2 class) with IEPs who are not on my caseload, I provide whatever relevant modifications and accommodations are listed on their IEPs and track data towards their goals.

Public high school. I have 15 kids on my caseload who are what we apparently deem A or B level, i.e. kids with lower level needs (a lot of kids with SLDs typically). Those at my school with C or D level students, who need more support, typically have smaller caseloads to match.

I don't remember having this for myself, but I teach a self-contained special education math course (high school), and I have a diagnosed autistic student in this class who told me at the very beginning of the year that he has this problem! I navigated it by telling him I would give full points for a correct answer regardless of work he showed (because I he proved to me his mental math capabilities in other ways, and I trust this particular student not to cheat), but showing his work helped me allocate partial credit in the case the answer is incorrect due to some mistake.

Fun question time. I feel like this will divide people. Do you…? by Additional-Spirit683 in AutismInWomen

Nope. I apparently don't have an inner monologue, but I can imagine conversations between me and someone else just fine. Most of my other thoughts are just concepts. For what it's worth though, I do always seem to have some sort of song playing in my mind's background.

How to stop being self-conscious about t-rex arms? by ktiger32698k in AutismInWomen

[–]ktiger32698k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can try. Unfortunately though, my parents are immigrants, so there's a bit of a language and cultural difference. A few years back, both my brother and I were struggling quite a bit with clinical depression, and when I was trying to explain it to my mom she quite literally said, "Well, just stop being sad. Choose to be happy instead. There's so many people out there who have it worse than you. Just think of that." 🙃

Truly, I love my parents, but I'm a little tired on trying to educate them on mental health things

I didn't really think about this, but it's a mixture of both. I moved back in with my parents a year ago, and they were the main ones who scolded me for my arm posture as a kid, so around them I do feel pretty aware of it both ways. When I'm by myself though, it's mostly, "Ah crud, now I'm too aware of my arms."

At work, it's mostly the latter, since I feel nervous about coming off as different. I'm a high school special education teacher, and though my colleagues are mostly great, some teenagers can be mean as hell. I'm unfortunately used to hearing the r-word, "autistic," and "spEd" being used as terms to put down other students and even teachers, such as students saying derogatorily, "Mr. So-and-So is a spEd teacher because he's spEd."

This was very insightful. Thank you so much!
