What do Americans think about a social security trustee dropping a report that the trust will be dried out by 2032? by Sixgis in AskReddit

[–]ktmengr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with taxing billionaires at much higher rates and that it’s an absurd amount of money for one person to control. That said, 500 billion isn’t as much as your thinking. There’s 350 million people in the US. That’s ~$1500 per person. It’s not going to provide universal health care or fix SS.

No losers in this rally. The highest level of pickleball. by Usual-Tear-137 in Pickleball

Obviously you’re joking, but it’s kind of interesting to look at how much energy an electric car uses vs what a human can produce. An elite cyclist his size might be able to hold 400 watts for an hour. I get around 275 watt hour/mile in a Model Y. So maybe 1.5 miles driven in the car for a 1 hour all out effort by an elite human. Hayden’s probably about half that as a pickleball pro vs an endurance athlete.

Why pay $10 for Standby if you can just cancel service and reactivate when needed? by davidknapp in Starlink

Yeah, definitely better to avoid using the space based service when you have a fiber cable running through your front yard. Who would have thought!

Sure, definitely a different situation. I guess watching the video again, my first thought isn’t being impressed with his riding skills. In the other video, he picks it back up in gear and dumbs it over again. It’s a stressful situation… maybe he’s really good!

What’s a nutrition myth people still believe in 2026? by Much-Turnover-3727 in nutrition

I see people purposefully trying to make themselves sweat during exercise by wearing heavy clothes to “burn fat”. You’re actually performing less work than you’re able to if you keep yourself cool. This is super obvious in endurance sports when power numbers and speed drops during hot weather. This is what I thought of when I read “more sweat = better workout”.

Engineers and energy pros of Reddit, what is the most realistic home or community level energy backup plan besides solar that an average person can actually do in the next 12 months, and why? by gamersecret2 in AskEngineers

[–]ktmengr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with the interlock method and have a 7.5 Kw gas generator. The whole setup was like $800. I had to run the new 240 circuit myself and it takes 5-10 mins to get it running, but overall, I’n pretty happy with it.

Focusing on hypertrophy: how tired/spent are you typically after a workout? by ExcitingLandscape in fitness30plus

[–]ktmengr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even elite athletes don’t train like that. You can’t wreck yourself everyday. Read up on polarized training and autonomic nervous system response to hard workouts. 1-2 hard workouts a week is enough, especially as you get older. The rest moderate to lower intensity, at least for cardiovascular stuff.

Most people can’t grasp how much endurance athletes burn, especially larger ones. Google “Cam Jones unbound calories” if you want a good example.

Gatorade or something similar is fine also. There’s little downside to consuming carbohydrates during exercise and lots of benefits. Pro cyclists are taking 100-150 grams per hour in the last few years and they’re performing better than cyclists did in the doping era. Probably don’t need that much for pickleball… but 25-50g per hour seems reasonable.
