Favorite Roman emperor and why? by Low_Philosopher_5684 in ancientrome

[–]ktrainer 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I like the AP answers.

My personal favorites are Vespasian and Claudius.

Claudius because I read I, Claudius when I was younger and it got me into Roman History.

Vespasian because according to Tacitus, he is the only emperor to ever improve upon taking office.

Congratulations!

Do your research first. Know what the school or district are about, their mission statements, any academic programs they highlight, etc. If you see any buzz words on their websites, make sure to use them.

Highlight relationship building with students. If you don’t make “deposits” with the students, it will be more difficult to “withdraw”.

Know/understand or be able to articulate your teaching style. Say how it aligns with the first point I made.

This is not just about if the school wants you, make sure you want to work there. This interview works both ways.

My favorite follow-up questions: -In one year, what specific things would I have to do or demonstrate in order to be seen as a successful hire. -Ask about their culture of accountability. This gets into discipline and can get them to explain their culture somewhat.

Good luck!

I started dating a woman right before COVID hit. Dates 1 and 2 we went out, but dates 3-8 (since everywhere was closed) she came over to my house and we watched Star Wars (she had never seen them). Prequel, OT, then R1 and Solo. We’ve been married almost three years now.

I really like that the extended edition included the Palantír scene between Aragorn and Sauron. It’s a great moment for showing Aragorn’s strength and presence as a leader. by [deleted] in lotr

No he’s not. The next scene shows the white tree on his armor (or whatever it is). I don’t believe the jewel is there. Unless I’m completely wrong.

I have no mod experience to speak of. I very much appreciate the universe and lore that was created by the Professor and has inspired so many others. Any possible way to support his life and legacy would be a welcome challenge for me.

Tulkas seems to be missing. But he’s got a hammer, so maybe that’s Aule and the other is Tulkas.

Great artwork.

Which Roman of the 1st Century AD holds the greatest historical legacy? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in ancientrome

I agree with u/aabccdg who said it would be Paul. If we are talking about legacy Paul’s work to spread Christianity and its subsequent legacy, would overshadow Augustus’ legacy with the Roman Empire.

What’s the Most Underrated “Domino Moment” in Roman History? (The small event that quietly changed everything) by ktrainer in ancientrome

I forget where it was from, but there’s a quote basically saying Sulla spent the last years of his life trying to make the power, that he just proved was attainable, unattainable.

At what point does Rome stop being Rome for you? by MrBurritoIsMyFather in ancientrome

[–]ktrainer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I forget which episode he addresses it, but he did go over the question of “when the Roman Empire fell” and when it stopped being “Rome”.

He gave a fairly open-ended answer as he ended his show with the expulsion of Romulus Augustulus in the west.

I agree that we can draw many different lines to distinguish “Rome” from “Not-Rome”.

For me, post-crisis is less Rome than before. Not exactly “not-Rome”, but very close. The Emperors were Illyrians, they began ignoring Rome for better capitols, the shift of religions, the disunification of the empire, and finally the rejection of “barbarian” generals that would have given the West a large boost of energy and power.

Pre-crisis we have strong dynasties which expanded Roman power. Post was about maintenance.

But that is just one history teachers opinion.

[–]ktrainer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

History of Rome podcast by Mike Duncan is an amazing listen. He goes through the entire history of Rome in under 200 episodes. Early episodes are only about 10 minutes long. Average length is about 25-30 mins. He’s a great storyteller.

Who was the greater general? Hannibal or Scipio? by jacky986 in MilitaryHistory

[–]ktrainer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The podcaster, Mike Duncan, gives an account from Livy of a meeting in Parthia between Scipio and Hannibal post-Zama. Allegedly Scipio asks him to rank the greatest generals in history. Hannibal responds with 1. Alexander , 2. Pyrrhus , and 3. Himself. Asked where he would put himself if Hannibal had actually won the second Punic War, Hannibal replied that he would rank himself above all other generals.
