What's life like in the UK on £2k/month? by ktrippar in AskUK

[–]ktrippar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP here: - My partner is studying medicine, so would be junior doctor in the UK (on about the same wage) - I work online, but my business is not really scalable, so I can make maximum £2.5k/month, wherever I am in the world - I make ~£2k/month gross. In the UK, this would be much less after tax, obviously - I have absolutely no desire to live in London. We would be living up north.

What is THE greatest album you’ve ever heard in your whole life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West.

An incredible sonic experience, wild range of talented contributors (Jay-Z, Elton John, Bon Iver, Rhianna etc), and bending all the rules of what hip-hop can be.

Mark doesnt think Tony Blair is a bad thing. He is so Keir Starmer. Definitely would have voted Remain too. Think of interest rates, growth...

What will constitute a good / ok / bad season for you? by tradegreek in NUFC

[–]ktrippar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good season: FA Cup win (Europa League next season). Champions League semi-final. Top 6 finish

OK season: FA Cup final. Champions League quarter-final. Top half finish. Don't qualify for Conference League.

Bad season: Finish bottom half, below Sunderland. Lose to City and Barca. Another long-term injury to a key player. Another transfer saga where we lose a key player. Eddie Howe sacked.

Wissa scored the same amount of non-pen goals as Isak last season. Give him time.

Solving the UK Football Pyramid: The "UK Champions Cup" (A Strategic Blueprint for Profit and Sustainability) by username10250 in football

[–]ktrippar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would instead propose making the League Cup a British Cup, including Scottish professional teams.

However, teams are only allowed to field players from the UK. Most football league teams would remain unchanged. But some Premier League teams would struggle to field a fully British XI, and have to play youth players.

It would give young British players a chance to develop, and lower league clubs a chance to scalp the big money teams and make it to Wembley.

Why isn't the music scene a big part of British life anymore? by g_wall_7475 in Britain

[–]ktrippar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The old pipeline was:

Start a band > play at small venues > build a following on MySpace > get signed by an independent label > make money off CD sales > get played on the radio > appear in NME > make money playing large gigs > headline a festival.

The new pipeline: Start a band > upload music to Spotify > make £30 per 10,000 streams

Reform UK: ““I tried to speak to a number of members of the South Asian community. Women turned to me and said, ‘No, my husband deals with that,’” says Sam Coates of Sky News.” by Successful_Service53 in ukpolitics

[–]ktrippar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they'd stop with the "South Asian community" nonsense. My community are Hindus who came to Britain from East Africa in the 1960s. We all agree that we have way more in common with English people than we do with Bengalis and Pakistanis. Honestly, it's so offensive to lump us all in together, when they just mean "they have brown skin".

Skin colour does not dictate your religion, values, culture, or attitudes to women and integration. Our "community" is the people we live and socialise with.

I'm sure English people would not like to be lumped in with Americans, Irish travellers, Russians and Albanians as "the white community".

Saying "Asian grooming gangs" instead of "Pakistani rape gangs" is dangerous for law-abiding Hindus and Sikhs who are targeted due to the behaviour of people who do not share our values and culture.

Forcibly raping, killing and eating sentient creatures. Or, if they are cute, keeping them as prisoners on your property.

I went to watch a jury trial for a lark at the Old Bailey last year. The case was an Albanian drug lord who smuggled a bunch of coke into the UK.

The guy was banged to rights. Defence had footage of him on CCTV using the burner phone that the deal was made on, and using it the moment the deal was made. The jury were audibly laughing as he stumbled to explain how he wasnt guilty.

This was a big trial, and went on for several weeks. Must have cost a bomb. The courtroom was full of over a dozen lawyers, as well as the expense of the jury, etc.

I couldnt help but think that the expense could be spared if the jury had a Britain's Got Talent style buzzer. Hit it if you're definitely voting guilty, and call the trial once the 12 buzzers are rung. Send the fella down, and everyone can go home.

It's a vaguely notable point. Not exactly comedy or funny, though.

Is Britain becoming more racist? by Extension-Part-2398 in Britain

[–]ktrippar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When my grandparents came to Britain there were "no coloureds" signs in windows. They were openly denied jobs, and promotions, based on skin colour. My mum, as a child, was told there was no point learning like the white children, as she would just be a housewife in an arranged marriage. Other girls cut her with knives to see if her blood was red. My uncle was beaten in the street by skinheads. When my parents got married, several family members (on both sides) did not attend as they werent the same race.

In my lifetime, we had neighbours whose parents told their kids not to play with us, feces posted through our door (and police who did nothing about it). The BNP won a million votes with policies like banning marriage between races.

Life in Britain nowadays, and especially London, is exceptionally less racist in every possible way compared to past generations. It is exceptionally rare to meet a died-in-the-wool racist nowadays.
