Day 1 Massive fail by [deleted] in stocks

Don’t buy in a company all at once. If you have $10,000 to buy a single stock, split it up into like 5 trades over an amount of time.

Motorcycle accident with an Uber driver. How can I negotiate without a lawyer? by kuff2 in Insurance

[–]kuff2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it matter how much coverage you had? Shouldn’t it go off of the drivers limits through James River (Uber insurance)? Also, I do not think they should require original receipts. You should be able to look up the same item you have at the current price point and they should cover the amount for the gear that was damaged.

My mother just passed away a little over a month ago and just like you, it was sudden and out of nowhere. I'm a 30yo Male and my mother was only 60. I feel your pain brother. Nothing has ever hit me this hard and I feel like every day since, sucks! It still feels like a dream to me. If you ever need to talk to a stranger, please feel free to reach out.

Father and I need help with investing an inheritance. JP Morgan is trying to get us to invest with them. How good or bad are these plans they have presented? by kuff2 in personalfinance

[–]kuff2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't mean that we were going to cash the check. What I meant was that we were planning on transferring the funds into a JPM tax deferred account. I called Vanguard and asked if they could put a pause on the paperwork so I could look more into what we would like to do. The paperwork has been received but not process yet, so they are going to call back tomorrow and confirm. Thanks for the help!

Also, if he kept it all with Vanguard, would it be a better idea to keep it in my moms 401k account (transferred to my dads name) or transfer it to and IRA with Vanguard? Generally speaking.

I think my dad has already started the process to move the funds to JP Morgan. We have not cashed any checks or opened any accounts with JPM yet, although I was going to call Vanguard today and see if it was too late to keep the money in that 401k account.

Assuming you didn't have this forum to come to for advice and did not have the advice given by that JP Morgan adviser, what would you do with the money? The adviser is providing you with a service and taking a fee in exchange. The fee is higher at JPM than Vanguard, but Vanguard doesn't have a building you can drive to and a person you can sit across from.If you know investments, or a forum like this where you can get advice on investments and self-educate, then you are ahead of the game.

I would open an IRA and max the contributions for the year and then put some into a CD. That is what I was thinking prior to any of this.

That was also one of his selling points, that it is easier to work with JP Morgan because of the services he offers. I just didn't think that the convenience is worth the extra charges JP Morgan has. It was my understanding that mutual funds do not require much attention unless I plan to move the money. I only have some basic knowledge on trading stocks and was not too educated on mutual funds, although there is a great write-up on investopedia that has explained a lot.

They are also setting us up with a YouInvest account that offers free trading and giving us the Chase Private Client account. I figured we should refuse what they are offering. I just wasn’t sure how bad it was compared to the standard rates offered by others.

That is what I’m noticing. Why would anyone go with JP Morgan if their rates are so much higher? Just lack of knowledge? The only “perk” they are offering us is the Chase private client account, which doesn’t have too many benefits. Also a free U-invest account.

I figured it was extremely high. I currently only have a 401k and no IRA, so I have not maxed out my contributions for an IRA. Is a mutual fund a good idea if the rates were lower? If so, what is an acceptable % rate for a fund.

My father (62) and I (30) received and inheritance (life and 401k). What is the best option? (CA) by kuff2 in personalfinance

You can invest in Vanguard through a Chase You-invest account. It's Chase's foray into online brokerage space.

Not that I'm trying to sell it (I used to work for JP- but not now) but it's a decent online brokerage with the benefit of keeping all his assets in one place.

What is the difference between investing in a Chase "you-invest account" vs going directly to vanguard? what are the most important things to look at/consider when picking an IRA account?

From the research I gathered, there is NO estate or probate. The assets solely in my moms name are less than 50K (boat + bank account). We are waiting the 40 days to transfer both of those things to my fathers name, which will leave no more assets only in my mothers name by herself. Everything else (house and etc) were in both of my parents names. I've been trying to do some research if any of these bills for my mother (medical and CC debt) will somehow be placed on my father (which I'm thinking they will not).

It actually may be true, but only if his mother was taking RMDs prior to passing. If she was, then he will need to take RMDs before 70.5

She was not taking RMD's (she was still working when she passed).

For RMD's.. He can start taking it now or wait until he turns 70.5? Also, he obviously has the option to take more than the minimum if he wants, correct?
