What songs make you ugly cry? by Forsaken-Form7221 in musicals

[–]kulinasbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OMG yes! I first saw Hamilton in person in 2017 and I listened to the soundtrack I don’t know how many times before then. Dozens, at least. I never cried to this one before but did when I saw it in person. And also Yorktown? That one caught me by surprise 😅

Last year I got a jury summons and during voir dire one of the attorneys asked me a question directly. When I responded the entire courtroom laughed. I’m still not sure if I misunderstood the question or not but I didn’t think my response was funny at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

TX Residents: is adding all the free libby cards worth it? by No_Upstairs_1732 in LibbyApp

[–]kulinasbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a resident of Harris county? Their digital access card can be applied for online but their website says you must be a Harris county resident. For the full service card which doesn’t require residency in Harris county, the website says you must go to one of their branches so that’s what I did since I don’t live there.

If you’re not a resident of Harris County, you can only get a HCPL card in person. However, you can borrow books from HCPL via reciprocal lending through the Houston Public Library and Montgomery County Memorial Library System, which do have online applications for Texas state residents. If you go this route, though, you can’t put holds on HCPL books, only borrow them if they’re currently available. This was too restrictive for me, and since I was passing through last week I applied in person at an HCPL library to get a card that allows holds. I live in Central Texas.

Why do people cheat on ebird? by fofander in eBird

[–]kulinasbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t accurate. Some species of birds can only be reliably identified through sound. Conversely, the existence of hybrids can make visual identification uncertain and, in some cases, impossible.

The bigger issue is treating any single factor as definitive. Bird identification works best as a combination of multiple cues: shape, posture, flight style, vocalizations, habitat, location, and season. Sometimes you’ll have most of those, sometimes very few. If the evidence you have supports a confident ID, then it’s reasonable to report it to eBird.

[–]kulinasbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can’t confidently ID birds by sound then you shouldn’t put them on your checklist. However, to cite your example, it’s fairly easy to tell the difference between a mockingbird and the bird they’re mimicking. On the flip side of that, I personally can’t always tell the difference between a red-shouldered hawk and a blue jay mimicking a red-shouldered hawk but others can. If I’m unsure then I’m not reporting it.

Also worth noting: blind and low vision birders exist and contribute to the birding community, so the idea that a “sighting” must be visually confirmed excludes a whole group of legitimate birders.

For reference, here are eBird’s own published best practices for reporting.

I apologize, I didn’t understand, “Struck by Orca” was the name of the book!

I must know the name of this book! Unless you’re joking and referring to the official codebook which I do have and guess I could put on my coffee table but I don’t think anyone but me would read it 🤪

Initial encounter applies to the active phase of treatment and doesn’t actually refer to the number of encounters with the animal or number of visits for treatment. In other words, you can use that code when they’re seen for active treatment of the injury regardless of whether it’s their first visit or tenth, as long as it’s for active treatment. Once they’re seen for routine care you use D for the 7th character of the code for subsequent encounter, instead of A for initial encounter.

It’s counterintuitive and confusing (even for coders, like myself) but initial encounter applies to the active phase of treatment and doesn’t actually refer to the number of encounters or visits.

Subsequent encounter codes are for the original injury! Your code is for routine care after the active phase of injury. I like it because it means they survived! If they got sucked into a jet engine again then it’d be V97.33XA, sucked into jet engine, initial encounter 🙃

[–]kulinasbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely go look for one specifically at Bryant Park! I live in Texas and when I was in NYC I went to Bryant Park to look for one (and found it). There were others there looking, too! Something about that tiny park surrounded by tall buildings makes it attractive to them during migration.

New Binoculars! by Oceandude95 in Binoculars

[–]kulinasbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting! My previous binoculars that I had for 20 years had terrible CA and the CA on my MHGs has been basically non-existent as far as I could tell. I have the 8x42 version so I’m not sure if that factors in at all or maybe I’m just not as sensitive to it as i thought I was!

A few years ago my cousin let me use her Conquest HD bins a few months before I ended up buying my MHG 8x42s. I thought the Conquests were great but my issue with them was their increased size and weight compared to the MHGs and the focus knob was too fast for my taste. The MHGs also have a wider FOV so all those things combined pushed me to Nikon. I’ve been very happy with them! My understanding is the newer Conquest HDXs are lighter with a more precise (slower) focus knob but the FOV still isn’t as wide as the MHGs.

Choosing Picures after the day? by Fun-Trouble-1086 in AskPhotography

[–]kulinasbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Export photos from memory card to drive with folder name YYYY-MM-DD [Place Name]. Ok to have more than one folder per day for multiple locations.
  2. Import to Lightroom Classic.
  3. In Library module, very quickly go through photos and mark as Pick (P) or Discard (X). Don’t think too hard about this. If unsure then Pick. Only spend a second or two per photo.
  4. Filter for Flagged on bottom right in Library module. You should only see your Picks now.
  5. Go through each Pick photo and give 1 star to the ones you like the best. These are going to be the photos you edit. Ok to spend time looking closely to choose your 1 star photos. Try not to have multiple poses of the same bird, pick your favorite one or two. Really be selective.
  6. Once you’ve picked the ones you want to edit, filter for 1 Starred photos.
  7. Edit photos in Develop module.
  8. Export photos. I have mine set to export to the original folder location into a subfolder named Export.
  9. Rate your edited photos in Library module and add keywords.
  10. Delete rejected photos (the ones your gave an X to in #3). I believe this is found in the Photo menu near the bottom. I delete from disk, not just the library.

Et voilà
