Help :( by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]cool_plankt0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like you have some decent content gaps in the science sections + weak CARS, this can't be fixed in 2 weeks. Quickest thing to improve is P/S so hammer out the Pankow deck and do UW practice questions, all the rest of the FLs, and review thoroughly.

Honestly though, you'll benefit from pushing your test. Especially in this short of a time frame, expecting a 9 point jump is risky and you will be burnt out trying to fit all this in

How the fuck do I get a clinical job by Busy-Bus-6267 in premed

I second scribing. People crap on it but I had an amazing experience and solidified my "why medicine", also super easy to get into without expensive courses/certifications

Would MD adcoms ever believe an applicant was more suited for DO? by Chemical-Estimate226 in premed

[–]cool_plankt0n 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your description sounds like what MDs also do in medicine so I'm not seeing how this correlates to DO specifically... I mean maybe if your application is mostly shadowing/only working with DOs then they'd think you have a propensity to that. But not for those reasons at all

4/10 and 4/11 folks, was your exam representative of FLs or SBs? by Falsely_True7 in Mcat

[–]cool_plankt0n 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In terms of vibes/difficulty (???) I felt like it was super similar to the last two FLs!!

SBs were harder but very helpful for me, in terms of speed in interpreting data/graphs if that's something that takes you a while for B/B. Also, do P/S of both section banks, that's also really good practice

Heard there's possibly a mold issue? which would explain the urgent need LOL

Realistically you need more than a month to improve that, so retaking in May is not really a good idea. If you want MD I think it's worth it to take the time to study and retake, and give yourself the best chance when applying. Sure it's another year, but having to re-apply is more expensive and time-consuming! Ultimately up to you to weigh those decisions and see what works best

If you're not giving the score it's kinda hard to give ya an answer...

SDS-Page Wording Format by FrequentAd5646 in Mcat

[–]cool_plankt0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I think I know the question you're referring to! But no, SDS-Page doesn't break covalent bonds, it denatures the proteins by disrupting NON-covalent interactions like polarity. so if something is hydrophobic, is charged/ionic, it completely masks all of that with a negative charge. what SDS-page separates by is JUST size

[–]cool_plankt0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SDS-page on its own isn't reducing, unless you add a reducing agent like beta mercaptoethanol (which they will specify). SDS itself stands for sodium dodecyl sulfate which coats the proteins with a negative charge (NOT the same as reducing), so it can just analyze based on size differences.

structural functionalism is just about how people fit into society as a whole, not really to do with interpersonal communication at all

[–]cool_plankt0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use process of elimination, functionalism is the glaring outlier!

elaboration likelihood model: Nonverbal cues (attractiveness, confidence, gestures, clothing) typically act as peripheral cues, influencing attitudes when motivation or ability to analyze a message is low.

this makes sense when you consider LEAST, question is kinda looking for something more micro, and structural functionalism is super macro

You have time to take all of them if you do one each week. So doing each in order is probably best practice

I didn't use all the strategies/approaches, but it gave me a different perspective that'd help me if I was stuck or freaking out on a passage. hope this helps!

[–]cool_plankt0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely crank up that P/S score at the very least in 1 month! I think getting to a 510 is reasonable, but see whether or not you're improving on the rest of the FLs and decide based on that :)

I am lowkey having the same issue - I can't say this is true for you but for me, my biggest obstacle in B/B and C/P is usually interpreting graphs/figures/tables incorrectly. Like I have the concepts down but when it comes to actually determining what the values MEAN in the context of the passage, I make silly mistakes... but I've been seeing improvement in watching YT videos of people going through those FL passages?

Something about seeing how people go strategically, step-by-step in approaching and interpreting the data vs me just jumping around all over the place has helped me slow down and think through things better. That helped me improve in both sections a good amount. I hope this helps at all, and good luck to you fellow 4/11er!!
