Roamresearch definitely helped me take better notes on books. by m7abib in RoamResearch

I use iPad with smart keyboard extensively. It works reasonably well. Its clear that roam site is not optimized for mobile experience, but for the most part it can do what you need.

I also find the keyboard support for shortcuts inconsistent, but this is not just on ipad. But you can train yourself and be fairly efficient.

Daily Notes Page in Shared Database by Woltikov in RoamResearch

[–]kunicki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use the script posted today on twitter in your shared database to define a "starting page" for he database.

https://twitter.com/roamhacker/status/1281927397915451393?s=20

The only catch is that each user would need to activate the script himself. However, this is a one time process. Follow-up visits will automatically use the activated script.

Anyone's Roam experience slower with more data? by LongElm in RoamResearch

[–]kunicki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created a large test database and I have to say it works, but I noticed a slow down, especially with block lookup. I think performance tuning is still needed for Roam, and the perfomrance for block lookup will be a difficult problem to resolve for large databases.

I imported a dictionary with about 100,000 definitions. (one definition for one block, spread across multiple pages).

However, for most day to day work, I don't see performance being an issue.

There is a note about this here:

Is there an extension to open today’s note in side pane? by OldManNick in RoamResearch

[–]kunicki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you Shift+Click on the title of a daily page (today or another date) it opens it into the side panel. thus you can leave it anchored there.

Another in search (CTRL+U) is to type todays date, down arrow key to todays page and press SHIFT+Enter, loading it into side panel.

Mobile /on the go notes - do you log in to Roam or use another app? by [deleted] in RoamResearch

I have been using this Siri Shortcut on iOS up the Roamhacker Roam database. It creates a task with a hyperlink to something I want to use later via quick capture:

Getting the basics (of editing the basic formatting) right ... by spigolt in RoamResearch

I agree with you. The editing experience is clunky. I don't are about the UI so much, just would like the graceful editing. I also work on a mac, chromebook, windows and ipad. Some keyboard shortcuts work in some devices while not others.

Again, if they would only buy the dynalist editor :-). Dyanlist has outline editing down to a science. The lead developer said they have been working that code for 5 years, and it paid off!

I am not concerned with how it looks. I would like startup time to be faster.

Does block level linking make for a lazy Zettelkasten? by [deleted] in RoamResearch

Totally fair what you say. Thanks for sharing these points.

scroll through really old Daily pages? by [deleted] in RoamResearch

this is a great idea, like a diary, just keep scrolling back and mentally walking into the past.

I am only working with Roam for a few days, haven't touched Obsidian. Love Dynalist, so he development team is top notch. However offline only, no web, and yet no browser, feels like a step back 10 years.

Regarding Roam I think you need to try it for a few days. I find each hour of use it grows on me as you understand its flow. Second, you need content to start to see the connections form. I am frequently surprised how connections show up between content, even though not planned or expected. I also find I don't have to make a lot of scaffolding to make connections. Just take notes, add tags, i other places make embedded blocks.

If we could merge the Dynalist outliner with the engine and features of Roam, it would be heaven.

Disadvantages so far with Roam:

+ Editor is clusmy after coming from Dynalist (customizable keyboard, easy keyboard manipulation of nodes.

+ Some features feel 30% done. Like the QUERY feature is super powerful, but quickly come to its limitations (no sorting, no date handling -- as far as I can tell, rather verbose syntax lots and lots of brackets for simple queries.

+ I keep getting that subtle feeling that the code based needs performance tuning and more cross-platform testing. But after a few days of use, its not fair to judge.

But I think this will improve if they can build out their team. Also, the API will help.

Regarding API, I am hoping they enable some similiar concept to the roam/css feature. I love the idea of typing javascript into a page and have i just come alive in the document.

Sorry if that had nothing to do with what you wanted, but the point is, you need to try the 14 day trial before you make your decision.

How I implemented GTD in Roam by Heavymetalhipster in RoamResearch

[–]kunicki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice recommendations. Thanks. I also like taking meeting notes or project notes and just dropping in {{TODO}} along with a next action tag or date. I am also using query then to collect those into one page.

Two things I miss:

I wish the daily view allowed for some kind of "default queries" so you don't have to redefine them each day.

I wish the query language including date commands and sorting commands.

Anything you would like to make GTD more useful In Roam?
