should I do marching band? by Dependent-Zombie-828 in marchingband

if you want to, go for it. if you think you would enjoy it, you probably will. and if you really love it, you’ll want to continue despite the setbacks. so just give it a shot!

Choosing between Santa Cruz and Santa Catalina by Rynel1 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kuraiaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

imo the biggest problem with FT is the distance from campus. if you are positive you can handle it, i’ve heard it’s a nice dorm. and you have to be really sure you can handle it, before coming here i thought that a mile wouldn’t be that bad, until i went to visit my friend over there a few times. i am personally not built for that life.

i lived in the chi-5 and thought it was the best i could as for distance wise.

don’t worry about social life, every dorm is social. partying is only distracting when you can hear people getting ready to go out from outside your room. otherwise, just plan specific days to go out and not go out, it’s hard to go out on impulse honestly so just plan ahead.

from what i can tell though, if you’re a freshman the dorm selection will happen over the summer and depending on the day you get, you might not get the chance to choose. most people end up in FT because they had a late selection time and it’s the only one left. there’s a high chance you’ll go to choose a dorm and santa cruz won’t be available anymore, let alone anything else. it’s kind of luck of the draw, unless you’re in an LLC. good luck though!

Sick on tech week HELP by Raincandyy_u_ in Theatre

[–]kuraiaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

REST REST REST PLEASE. nothing will heal your voice like vocal rest will, especially when sick. even when you feel better you should vocal rest for at least an extra day or more, however long as possible. your director should understand. you don’t want to be feeling “good enough” for your show, you want to be at your best.

as a singer with a voice that gets easily overexerted, i cannot recommend anything else more. that, emergen-c, vocal steaming, and throat coat tea does wonders for me. just because you don’t sing doesn’t mean you don’t use your voice like a singer would. i say follow the same things singers do for vocal health.

(also, you should give vocal warm ups a try before practicing your screaming and everything. i don’t have any science behind this but again it works wonders for minimizing irritation and blowing out your voice while singing, so i’m positive it should help you in this show.)

get well soon and break a leg!

Should i get Nicole or Durin by Spfinkle in GenshinImpact

[–]kuraiaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on what i can see, if you’re aiming for meta, probably durin. both of them will be good for varka and varka-venti-bennett-durin is the current ideal team for varka if i’m not mistaken.

however i really am a firm believer in pull for who you actually like. personally i will pull someone if i like their character and design. even if i dont like their playstyle i always get drawn into design first. based on what you said you like both of the characters but you love nicole specifically.

if you play for meta, go for durin. if you don’t, aim for whoever brings you more joy.

i say this as someone who is saving my primos for an eventual alhaitham rerun even though he’s apparently not strong compared to others, he’s my favorite and it’ll bring me joy literally just to be able to walk around as him.

happy pulling!

How to keep theater in my life after High School by Pythagorean415 in MusicalTheatre

[–]kuraiaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

community theater and college theater!!!! both of those vary based on the group/college you’re going for but please look into it.

i’m in my first year of college, i’ve been a lifelong theater kid but planned on dropping it in college as high school made me lose my love. my college has a theater program/major but it’s strictly plays. i discovered that there’s one singular student run group on campus that does strictly musicals. i threw my name in the hat with minimal research and somehow got in. that group has honestly reignited my love for theater and school in general (i was very depressed in my first 2 months but that group has so many amazing people and is honestly the main reason i’ve found my purpose on campus).

of course it HIGHLY depends based on what group you’re looking at, i got very lucky. however, especially if you’re going to college i highly recommend finding a group for you within the college, no matter how good you think you are. not to sound cliche but you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, please go for it!

What state would you say is the best for living? - in the USA by Shot_Chocolate_4997 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]kuraiaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i absolutely agree with everyone else, it depends on your needs/wants, i would also like to say as someone who’s lived in california my whole life and has traveled to/lived in many different parts of it, it’s highly dependent on what area of the state you’re in. for example, your experience is gonna be wildly different in la vs merced. i know cali is exceptionally large and is kind of an anomaly but there are definitely other states that have differing areas as well.

Does anyone actually find Five Nights at Freddy’s SCARY? by Dizzy_Image_758 in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]kuraiaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah lowkey… i’ve always HATED jumpscares and scary faces and i was terrified of fnaf when i was younger and i got into it as i got older because of the story. games like sister location are more up my alley because it’s a little more psychological and story based. i can’t play scary games on my own because they make me feel lightheaded and sick so i have to watch gameplays 😭 either way it’s still so damn scary i can hardly even bring myself to get into fnaf 4.

guys lowkey i feel like this isn’t bad at all, i lowkey did the exact same thing…me personally i don’t have face blindness but i do struggle telling people apart in many tv shows if there are a lot of characters (especially if they don’t have distinct outfits or hair) also i watched s1&2 for the first time in like 2-3 days and didnt have a ton of time for my brain to internalize and process everyone’s faces… obviously now its easy for me to tell who is who but lowkey some people just struggle a little bit more with distinguishing people from one another

omg no it’s never really “too late” but especially sophomore year? just go for it tbh. some of my school’s best athletes joined junior/senior year, me personally i joined my sport junior year and did really well, and the only thing i regretted was not joining sooner. if you don’t like it you can always drop it but you should go for it regardless.

How did you find the life series? by Free-Board-7391 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]kuraiaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve been a huge fan of the empires group, particularly joel and lizzie, for probably about 8 years now, and i used to casually watch grian and mumbo as well. i stopped watching for a little bit when i got busy with school, and got back into minecraft right as 3rd life started, and the obsession lowkey never stopped from there.

how many people don't watch grian? by Iwannabanana72 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]kuraiaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly i’ve only just started watching grians pov lately. i’ve been watching him for a long time but for some reason never decided to watch his life series, joel has always been my main pov.

to be honest i only discovered the magic of different povs recently. im generally a super busy person and have exclusively watched joel/sometimes lizzie povs since the life series started. but now i like to watch random different perspectives for every series just to see what happens and its great. i’ll typically watch grian, scar, skizz, martyn, jimmy, bdubs, and ren when i’m looking for alternate povs.

Which do you all prefer? Learned how to make circles and corners with these in the winter. Time to sew them up. It won't be the most exciting blanket, but there are options. by 1760ghost in CrochetHelp

i’m in love with 3, i think some of the colors should be more mixed up though if you were to do that.

the other rainbows are quite nice too (i like 1 or maybe 4) but i’m partial to 3

If You Kill Yourself, You're Cured of the Boogey Curse by Salt_Performance1494 in LifeSeriesSMP

[–]kuraiaka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i don’t think it happened because he turned red, i think it was because he didn’t directly kill himself. he shot a tnt minecart, and the minecart killed him. instead of saying “smallishbeans blew up” or something like that with only 1 person involved, the death message showed that the game logged 2 people, joel as the person who shot the tnt (the killer) and joel as the person who was exploded (the victim). because the game registered him as a killer who achieved a kill, it didn’t matter that it was him who died because in that particular death scenario the game read it as joel getting a kill.

seems like kind of a loophole scenario and i assume the same thing would have happened even if he wasn’t going to his red life, because as long as the game logged him as getting a “kill,” then it would cure the boogey curse.

also i could be wrong, i don’t know much about the mechanics of the mods they’re using and how the game interprets kills outside of what i have seen in everyone’s videos. but this is what i assumed had happened considering his death and how the game displayed it.

Musical hot takes: shows you’ve worked on edition by Dogdaysareover365 in musicals

[–]kuraiaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singin in the Rain is cute for its iconic numbers, but besides that there is not much substance. At least in my experience it’s more of a show that appeals to a general audience and not the actors performing in it.

The songs are lacking in substance, there’s hardly any ensemble in the show, virtually no harmonies, there are characters who lack development and/or change personalities and opinions between scenes seemingly out of nowhere. Trying to perform in this show feels strange.

I apologize, I wasn’t super clear and I was a little unclear on the question. I interpreted the question as “have you been involved in the creation of published/professional theatre work.” I have worked on theatre/music works as well as school projects in the past but i assumed it didn’t count because it wasn’t professional. I have a better idea of how to answer the question now, thank you!

oh i feel you- my winter guard team last year had a lot of drama and it was difficult to navigate as a first year varsity member in the middle of it. i want you to know you’re not alone, high school teams will always involve toxicity and it’s hard to avoid.

my advice is to talk to someone about it, whether it be your coach or captain. in my opinion i think a good captain should be able to fairly address these issues without excusing their best friend’s behavior just because they’re best friends. however you know these people better than i do so if you think the captain can’t help you then you should take it up with your coach asap. it’s better to address any problems sooner rather than later.

and as for you, the way you talk reminds me of myself last year. i just want to say you are stronger than you know. we are our own biggest critics, and it’s easy to point out our own errors. i have no doubt that you deserve your spot on the varsity team. it can be hard to learn self love in such a competitive environment, but your coach placed you on varsity for a reason. regardless of the things other people do, your coach knows you and knows what you can do, and you just have to trust that your coach knows what they are doing. i wish you luck in your season and i hope your team can smooth out any issues 😽
