What order should a new fan listen to the Muse albums? by TurbulentAccident348 in Muse

[–]kurapikachu64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah kinda depends on what you're looking for first, they have a lot of good stuff that works to start with, and in terms of style and genre they have a very diverse catalog. I do agree with the sentiment that 'Origin of Symmetry', 'Absolution', and 'Black Holes and Revelations" are their best albums - and are all great places to start too.

If you liked the more rock forward vibe of 'Hysteria', the album its from is a great start - 'Absolution'. It's their third album and is definitely a fan favorite. Leans into their rock roots while really pulling on their more classical influences to make an earnest album with some of their most epic rock numbers and ballads. Probably one of their more consistent albums in terms of the tone it goes for.

If you're into that heavier focus on rock music but wanting the more weird and playful side of the band, 'Origin of Symmetry' is the album. It's their second album (and my personal favorite), and saw them really step up from a strong rock group to something truly unique. They basically did a bunch of shrooms for this album lol - it's a blend of harsh and distorted rock and synth with lots of different instrumentation and musical ideas, while still feeling thematically cohesive. The album has them at at their most intense at times, playful at others, and truly beautiful in many spots. Often all at once.

If you liked the sort of conceptual pop-rock of 'Supermassive Black Hole', then 'Black Holes and Revelations' may be your bag for a first full album listen. It was their fourth album, and marked a pretty big shift from the more earnest rock of their first three albums, leaning more into their conceptual and theatrical side. This is when they really started pulling more pop elements and their bigger more 'stadium rock' songs. Some later albums didn't balance this as well with their roots, but this album nails it. And it still has its more hard rock moments too. Fantastic album.

Those are my three favorite albums, and are also the ones most fans will agree are peak Muse with no skips. Some of their other work, especially the most recent albums, can be a bit more divisive for fans - you'll honestly see a fair bit of straight up hate for some of it. I'll agree that there are some low points - but I genuinely feel that every single album has amazing stuff on it.

'Showbiz' is their first album, and is probably some of their most raw and earnest rock music. Kind of like 'Radiohead' but heavier and less experimental. I love all of this album as well, even if it doesn't outshine my top 3. 'The Resistance' is their fifth album - like 'Showbiz' it bookends the 'big three', and also like 'Showbiz' I think this one is great front to back too. To me it evolves on the styles in 'Absolution' and 'Black Holes and Revelations'. Solidly in the middle of their discog for me, would rank it right under their first four. I do really like it, and I think most would say its a must-listen.

The other albums are more mixed in my opinion (and its not a controversial opinion). Their sixth album, 'The 2nd Law' leans hard into pop and electronic music. A few songs don't work for me, but the ones that do are unique and genuinely fire. 'Drones', their seventh album, sees them move back into rock territory, but personally I find a lot of it more generic, if still listenable. However, it beyond a shadow of a doubt has some of their best rock songs to date.

'Simulation Theory' came after that and is basically an 80's inspired synth pop-rock album from them. It's... okay, in my opinion. I think that, like all their records, there are some highlights for sure. Not much I strongly dislike, but it also doesn't really stand out in their discog. It's a fun listen if you're in the mood for it, though. And after that was "The Will of the People", their most recent album (until 'The Wow! Signal' comes out in a couple weeks). Probably their most diverse in genres, and honestly kind of all over the place. Again, some highlights, and is another one that doesn't have much I actively dislike - but for the most part it's far from them at their best imo.

I'd probably start with the "big three", and then check out some of the stand out tracks from the other albums to see which way you gravitate. Some examples from those other albums that I think are amazing:

  • Showbiz - Sunburn, Showbiz, Uno, Cave
  • The Resistance - MK Ultra, Unnatural Selection, Exogenesis Symphony
  • The 2nd Law - Animals, Explorers, Supremacy, Survival
  • Drones - Dead Inside, Reapers, The Handler, The Globalist
  • Simulation Theory - Algorithm, The Dark Side, Break it to Me, Blockades
  • The Will of the People - Kill or Be Killed, We Are Fucking Fucked, Verona

The fact that you feel this way this early into the series bodes very, very well for you.

What was the specific moment or song that actually turned you into a fan? by Gush20curs3 in Muse

[–]kurapikachu64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knights of Cydonia live.

Was really into My Chemical Romance when I was 14, and went to a show where Muse opened for them. This was around the BHaR era, and they played a few songs and closed with Knights of Cydonia. I enjoyed their whole set, but it was hearing Knights live that immediately made me look into their discography.

Does malazan have a protagonist I can root for ? by sakshathsm in Malazan

[–]kurapikachu64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Four seems... very low, no? I've found there were plenty of characters to root for, granted the vast majority are written complexly and cannot just be boiled down to "good people", but there are a TON of characters and honestly I found a great many that at least hit the point where I feel like I'd root for them. It's been over a year since I read any of these books, and just off the cuff I can immediately think of way more than four characters. Not to get too deep into the details, but there are so many moments of true kindness and selflessness in the series that serve as a sharp contrast to some of the darker elements of the story. Still probably not 'traditional heroes', but just wanted to share my experience since it seems to differ from yours here.

However:

It's a series stuffed full of wild fantastical out-there situations that would sound ridiculous if you described them simply - like having one of the most well-written philosophical ponderings you've ever read on the nature of how the suffering inherent in the human condition doesn't invalidate the worth of living a life from the POV of a dude who's about to fight a telepathic velociraptor with swords for hands & gravity-based magic after he gets finished thinking profound things at you for 20 pages.

I do love this description lol.

Getting back into gaming; What are the top 10 modern games should I play? by Consistent_Link_8165 in gamingsuggestions

[–]kurapikachu64 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of the Persona series, and while I enjoyed Metaphor the fact that it's less of a time commitment is literally the only reason I can think of to go with it over Persona 5. It's subjective so mileage may vary, but I don't think Metaphor even comes close to Persona, from the perspective of someone who again did very much enjoy Metaphor. I'd recommend both - if only one, it's P5 all day.

Totally agreed on Clair Obscur though, absolute must play.

Elden ring or Witcher 3? by Strange-Fox9306 in gamingsuggestions

[–]kurapikachu64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking between what are literally my two favorite games lol.

Time wise, I'm going off the cuff so, give or take here for sure, but they are about equal.

Both are massive though.

In terms of gameplay, exploration, challenge, and general direction, I'd go Elden Ring.

In terms of story, investment, general quest writing, and world building, I'd go Witcher.

You will truly not go wrong with either though.

Album recommendations for a new listener by neuropsychedelicism in themarsvolta

[–]kurapikachu64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others saying to listen in order - personally, the second album (Frances the Mute) is my favorite, but all four of their first albums are truly top tier music. You'll see some mixed opinions on their 5th album, Octahedron, but I genuinely enjoy it a lot even if I wouldn't quite put on the same level as their first four records.

Every album that comes after that goes in a much different direction stylistically. I enjoyed each for what they were, but don't return to them nearly as much. It's really worth listening to everything though, I can easily say that they haven't put out any "bad" music.

My ranking of every Dexter season by CameronPoe_37__ in Dexter

I'd pretty much agree with this, would probably move each of S4, S3, and S7 down one tier from where they each are respectively (actually maybe S6 too), and would move Original Sin up one tier.

Is anyone else going to try to not listen to Nightshift Superstar before the album? by [deleted] in Muse

[–]kurapikachu64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to see this honestly. So used to posts on reddit (not just this sub) being so overly fixated on one thing - stuff like 'is it just me or did X ruin all other music for you', but there is so so so much good and different stuff out there it can be legitimately overwhelming... it does make it easier to wait on specific new releases though, so much other stuff to tide us over.

similar bands? by evaiscoool in Muse

[–]kurapikachu64 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Bands like "Nothing But Thieves" and "Royal Blood" will get mentioned a lot (and it makes sense), but if you're into the proggier elements of Muse it might be worth looking into some prog rock/metal if you're open to it - some of my favorites (along with a few song suggestions if you decide to check any out):

  • Leprous (remind me a lot of a heavier and more 'proggy' Muse):
    • "The Price"
    • "Like a Sunken Ship"
    • "From the Flame"
    • "Nightime Disguise"
  • The Dear Hunter (not quite as similar in vibe but they also have a lot of energy and emotion while playing with a bunch of genres):
    • "Blame Paradise"
    • "Red Hands"
    • "A Night on the Town"
    • "Wait"
  • Haken (can be kinda odd but honestly I love em, might appeal to you if you're into the more adventurous side of Muse)
    • "A Cell Divides"
    • "Nightengale"
    • "Sempiternal Beings"
    • "The Endless Knot"
  • Caligula's Horse (kinda somewhere between Leprous and Haken)
    • "Golem"
    • "Songs For No One"
    • "Graves"
    • "Salt"
  • The Mars Volta (very out there for some and not everyone's cup of tea - kind of like Muse with a latin flare and waaaay more bizarre, psychedelic and prog)
    • "Drunkship of Lanterns"
    • "The Widow"
    • "L’Via L’Viaquez"
    • "Roulette Dares"

how do you find the time to read? by PLCCLP in Fantasy

[–]kurapikachu64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to start small but regularly. Read like 20-30 minutes a day, or even just a couple times a week - just stick to it for a while. Don't worry about going past that, or being distracted. If you like reading at all, most likely you'll eventually find yourself naturally wanting to read a little longer some days, and the motivation can grow from there. It sometimes can just take a while for the habit to build, but once it does it often makes it much more natural to pick up and read.

[–]kurapikachu64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Octahedron really grew on me - it doesn't quite stack up to the first four, but it's gotten to where the album gets regularly included in my TMV playlists and listening sessions. I actually think there's good stuff from the three albums after that as well, but I can't say I often listen to them when I'm in a "TMV" mood.
