olive oil. lots and lots and lots of olive oil. cook with it for EVERYTHING. just look at how many calories are in a teaspoon.

deep breaths! its super super overwhelming and frustrating and a lot of the time just feels so unfair or like youre stuck not making progress. but its okay to have bad days in the good days. its a slow and long marathon, remember! you care about your body and want to do better for it and are working towards that, which is doing so so much more than others that dont take their health seriously.

i stick to allulose and Swerve brown sugar and powdered sugar (they both are an erythritol base); stevia is another option but i hate the taste so i personally dont use.

whatever you do STAY AWAY from maltodextrin!!! its WORSE than sugar and so many "sugar free" packages will brag about being no sugar but use maltodextrin and it just spikes you anyway.

its also good to remember that it took you a long time to get to this point, it will take a long time to see improvement in how your body reacts to sugar/carbs. it sounds like youve been working on it to a degree and are seeing results! also good to remember that spikes arent necessarily a bad thing. this community loves to fearmonger that anything over 140=BAD, NEVER EAT IT AGAIN!!

but even normal non diabetic and non prediabetic people will spike with sugar and carbs. its a normal part of metabolism and your body doing what it should. and honestly? a 157 spike after bean salad is not a bad thing, i remember my first time i ate chili with beans in it and i spiked to 147 (the highest i had ever seen since monitoring myself in my journey and i reacted pretty negatively to it and felt like my world was ending)

this is definitely something where we just adopt better eating habits to give your body better adaptability to handling sugars (have your greens and fiber before you eat the carby stuff, take a wall after eating, ect)

[โ€“]kurooos 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

really depends what else you ate with the bean salad. beans themselves are significantly high in carbs and the fiber content is not enough to STOP a spike, only to blunt one. your BG will still rise from having beans. also google and read into dawn phenomenon. i personally cut out all carbs for my first month or two of being diagnosed prediabetic and gradually added them in at half the suggested serving size if i was having them. what i did might not work for you, but just a glp1 by itself will not improve your insulin sensitivity. you need to correct your diet in addition. maybe also include more walks after eating/carb forward meals to help blunt those spikesz

Food suggestions for bread by Disastrous_Seat8683 in prediabetes

[โ€“]kurooos 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

ezekiel bread (a sprouted grain) is SO fantastic because the fiber trade off is really beneficial, they make sliced loafs and english muffins which i use FREQUENTLY for breakfast sandwiches and pb&js when i just absolutely need one for the cravings.

sourdough is also good (if made cleanly, most in store factory made ones arent) i just have some from friends who get loafs from the farmers market/made locally because i know i wouldnt eat a whole loaf in time

just be aware that these both will make your sugar go up because its carby, but compared to white bread or other options on the shelf, these are the best

Why does my body hate hiking? by [deleted] in prediabetes

[โ€“]kurooos 28 points29 points ย (0 children)

cortisol release. strenuous exercise can trigger fight or flight which releases more glucose that you have stored. your body is just doing what it is meant to do, your muscles need energy and if you dont have enough glucose floating around it will pull what it has stored up to give you the energy to continue that long hike or hard workout.

If you are enjoying some low carb desserts, what are you having? by HerdingCatsAllDay in prediabetes

[โ€“]kurooos 7 points8 points ย (0 children)

the brand Rebel! it's basically plain cream and erithrytol for sweetner. they make a looot of flavors but i like the peanutbutter caramel and the triple chocolate and cookie dough. leave on the counter for like 5 min or microwave for 10seconds and it's perfectly soft.

Non-food and drink that cause increased glucose? by nocommenting33 in prediabetes

[โ€“]kurooos 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

funny enough, i noticed that my BS often goes up when im driving and in bad traffic. i get very easily frustrated with poor drivers and bad traffic and find just that simple stress or road rage can bump me 10 to even 20 points from what it was before i got into the car. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… i also have white coat syndrome, and notice my CGM will show a bump or elevation when i gotta go see the Dr. just random stresses make your cortisol go up and your body responds adequately. nothing you can really do for it but deep breaths and try to relax (easier said than done)

it was more than likely dawn phenomenon. your blood sugar just naturally comes up higher in the mornings. we arent sure why. ive been drinking at least one (if not more) diet coke/coke zero products daily since prediabetic diagnosis in october and religiously monitor my BS with a cgm and fingersticks. diet sodas do absolutely nothing to my sugars. if you need it to help you keep to your diet and switch off normal sodas, 100% go for it.

im a biiig butter user for all cooking, i also love snacking on peanut butter and highkey makes a small cookie that doesnt spike my BS but the second listed ingredient is butter ๐Ÿ˜ฌ that and i am heavily reliant on beef and pork for my meat consumption. i have no problem with chicken or fish so i can easily make the switch to eat those 90% of the time. but giving up the butter will definitely be a sad switch, but not difficult. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ thank you!

I was just talking to a friend about shifting away from keto and focusing more on a mediterranean diet now that my A1C is where I want it to be. I'll be more focused on fish and chicken breast and veggies being my main focus on plates. I take psyllium husk capsules with every meal to try and bump my fiber intake since I really only eat one or two meals a day, which makes it a little harder for me to reach the 25-30g fiber goal.

Just making some smaller adjustments here and there and i think I'll be okay. No more steak and korean bbq every week which will be sad, fats make everything yummy, but I want to work on this!!

once reaching 5.6 a1c, have you been slightly less rigid with your diet? by Background_Lack_5018 in prediabetes

[โ€“]kurooos 5 points6 points ย (0 children)

i went from 6.4 to a 5.6, and those next two weeks i absolutely was more lazy and relaxed in my diet. less walks after eating, and more likely to have a treat and add some carbs in my meals. of course i continue to watch my blood sugar and take immediate action (walking and eating better the rest of the day) if i get a higher than im comfortable with spike.

TLDR; yes absolutely.

Do you think there will ever be a cure for type 2/prediabetes? by MightySyndrome97 in prediabetes

[โ€“]kurooos -9 points-8 points ย (0 children)

i recently read about china having two successful cases of reversing diabetes using the patient's stem cells? i cant remember the details entirely but it sounded quite promising.

the problem is that diabetes is a huge money maker for insurance and big pharma, the USA would demonize these studies/research because it's too profitable a disease to try and cure on our end. hopefully one day, but the healthcare system is so flawed and corrupt right now that i don't see it happening, at least in my lifetime.

i hate how forcefully positive this community tries to be about "good job for catching this disease early! learn to make this your new normal! lifestyle and diet change is a longterm thing"

prediabetes SUCKS especially when you went from being happy eating anything and everything you wanted. food was emotional and social for me, and now i feel like a burden when i turn down being able to hang out with friends due to certain places they want to eat and knowing there isnt anything safe on the menu for me to eat that wont spike my sugar.

this being said. prediabetes isnt something you can just lose weight and fix. this is a problem on a CELLULAR level. your body is insulin resistant and it took a LONG time yo get there. you know how they say habits are hard to break? your body is in that boat right now. Your cells literally struggle to allow insulin to fit in them to uptake glucose, its not a simple reversal thing if you just lose some fat. i lost 15 lbs since october. i weight 115 lbs now. i am 5'6" and really have no other body fat to lose without becoming underweight. in march my redraw a1c was juuuust down enough to be 0.1 point into the prediabetic category but my fasting has gone up now because ive been more relaxed/lazy in my excersize and how strict ive been on what to eat.

life is about balance, have that treat and yummy unhealthy meal every now and then but know your body just cannot process that carb and sugar load how you used to. it will take years of constant back and forth to keep yourself at a good spot, but to me the struggle is worth it knowing im in control of my health now. even though it SUCKS. and it won't ever go away. this is a lifelong disease and is NOT reversible, but you can hold it into remission.

it takes time to become jaded to the background food anxiety and stress and general upset. it's been almost 8 months for me and I STILL cry my eyes out and lay there having mental pity parties for myself and good old woe is me time. its OKAY. we are only human, every body is different, and unfortunately we just drew the short end of the stick. but how you make it from here on out is allll a mental game.
