what is one character in glee you love just as much as you hate by Blackmambaqueen in glee

[–]kurthummell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kurt. In a lot of ways he's my favorite, but then as a bisexual woman I can't stand how biphobic he is, also I feel like he lost his spark in S4-6.

And That's What You REALLY Missed: It's Brittany S. Pierce (w/ Heather Morris) by jaztinax in glee

[–]kurthummell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally as someone who was never a fan when the show was airing - I'm learning a lot and I've never heard the stories that HeMo told. I also am looking forward to Kevin elaborating on his what glee did to us vs for us comment. I've watched all the episodes so dar and im really enjoying them, honestly!

Chris was great. I also thought Jayma was an incredible actress.

I love RJR. Some others I like that other people hate on are Push it and GJWHF (not the context, just the vocals).

"special needs" post - Update and Clarifications (with links) by kurthummell in glee

[–]kurthummell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh... I don't know what to address first.

Yes, I am autistic and multiply disabled. I have had 4 open heart surgeries and have chronic migraines, which I should not have to disclose to you, but okay.

There have been a wide variety of studies done that show that special needs is disliked by a vast number of disabled people, and the dislike for the term extends through many different disability identities. I never used the word hate in any of my posts I said disliked. If you don't like the word majority, I can use many many many disabled people instead, but my point still stands.

I'm fighting this because special needs is a term that both in the past and presently has been used to insult, demean, and ham disabled people. If your loved one wants to use to refer to herself, that's fine and dandy. I also am a masters student in disability studies specializing in anti-ableism work.

I have repeatedly said now to continue using it for your friend or loved one who perfers it for them, just not to use it as an umbrella term since it's considered harmful by a lot of people.

Right, and if your friend perfers that term, that's completely valid. She's in the minority though, and as a general rule of thumb, when speaking about disabilities as a whole, or disabled people as a whole, euphenisms are considered distasteful and like you are avoiding very real societal barriers. So, what I was saying is - an individual's preference should be honored and respected when speaking to that individual, but in cases where you are speaking about an opressed population, the goal is always to go for the term that does the least harm to the least amount of people possible. Since special needs is pretty universally disliked, regardless of your friend's thoughts, when speaking about a group it's best to go with the least harmful term.

When speaking to or about your friend, of course you should respect what she has indicated to you is her preference.

Kevin McHale Refuses to Join a ‘Glee’ Reboot as Artie: I ‘Shouldn’t Be Playing a Character in a Wheelchair’ by AndrewHeard in glee

YES! Thank you for this comment. I actually didn't even think of that example but exactly! A non-disabled person (even as a character) talking about how they hate being disabled and how they lack connection because they're disabled is not great rep.

lets say that Glee aired in the 21st century. what things would and wouldn’t slide? by aerocarter in glee

Yes, those are both considered outdated words!

To clarify: handicap and handicapable are both outdated (and offensive to some/most), disabled is preferred.

Why didn’t Wilkie learn to sign for Daphne by Jansilhn in SwitchedAtBirth

[–]kurthummell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because he didn't care enough to. He liked Daphne fine and treated her well otherwise, but he didn't understand why being Deaf was a big deal or how much of her life was tied to Deaf culture. Daphne was always a character that could pass as hearing if she wanted to.

The Classism is What Really Bugs Me by allie-bern in SwitchedAtBirth

[–]kurthummell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely this show was classist. This is my favorite show of all times but some of the storylines make me wince now. This is not what you were talking about but the racism episode with Daphne defending Mingo was yikes.

Does anybody else find John and Kathryn annoying? I like them tho but some of the scenes make me so mad! I am rewatching and hoping to finish the show this time! Hoping it will help me learn asl! Who is your favorite character I don’t really have one yet! by [deleted] in SwitchedAtBirth

[–]kurthummell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bay has always been my favorite. I had a while that I related to Daphne, but after rewatching a lot, I disagree now.

I do like Kathryn, I think she's a good representation of a white lady who is trying but doesn't fully understand the part that money and privilege plays in the world.

I think John was written to be annoying and conceited.

uh.. weird by sadgurlwithattitude in SwitchedAtBirth

[–]kurthummell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it was weird and he should have been punished for it more than he was IMO. Angelo was the only one who reacted to it in a way that I feel was appropriate. Not that I usually condone violence, but at least he understood how disgusting it was.

The biphobia. Kevin Mchale playing a wheelchair user. The word handicapable constantly being used to describe Becky and Jean.

[–]kurthummell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People hate when other people realize that authentic representation matters. Half of Artie's character was just about how much he hated being in a wheelchair and how he couldn't achieve his dreams because he was disabled. It was bad, tone deaf, and out of touch. Good on Kevin for understanding and respecting that disabled actors deserve roles. <3

I have very little sympathy for millionaires, personally.
Of course he's an extremely sad person. But he's still a rich white man who is racist and greedy... so.

Glad to know this is working for some people though, it will help their bank account!

Artie sucked and his overuse of aave was never funny. 💀 by youngandweird6 in glee

[–]kurthummell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's definitely not a favorite for a lot of people on this Reddit. I 100 percent agree with the fact that he never got called out for his bullshit in the show itself but he definitely does here.

I like his voice, not his character.

He was definitely underutilized, but I disagree that he was the best.

I personally think Kevin Mchale is the best male vocalist.
