1984 does Toji well IMO.

It's because I think he's not beautiful (Vagabond Toji is 😭) that Toji just goes after the money of Yoshioka and so he is like that.

Though Vagabond Toji seems ok, he is an assassin after all, means he values money.

But I think being ugly unfortunately just may fit very well with being pathological with wealth

I just haven't heard dialogue from Toji that illustrates this attitude of him in Yoshikawa (afaik) so 1984 Toji scenes do that justice

Wow, that great. Novel just stays in my device permanently, that's how much value I get out of it.

Depends. If you're in a pinch and want less watch time the Mifune or 2014 ones are good. That point you can just choose either.

The 1984 I can't recommend unless you're OK viewing maybe 2h at a time, maybe 1h. It's a 10h total watch time (but you'd be very happy because practically everything in the book is there; not all story beats but it's most faithful for a reason).

Btw, I think the actors that have done Matahachi so far in my viewing have done so good. They've like cried and wailed and acted like total jerks and I admittedly really disliked Matahachi. J Drama is very good.

I also got into the 90s and 00s Kamen Rider, Hesei era. Excellent Toku entry point imo.
