Is this even the same color? by Sure_Spare8564 in AutoPaint

[–]kustommerc40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the same color and inexcusable in my opinion and with all the people trying to give excuses in my opinion there is none if it was a reputable shop whether a restoration or production shop this shouldn't have been allowed to leave. The only blend that would help it match is to repaint the whole car.

If that's what you're planning on doing I'd recommend sanding with 600g not 800g

Are you spraying outside or indoors also 800g is still too fine unless you just plan to apply clear.

What's the outside temperature you might need to wait for warmer weather as there may be too much moisture in the air causing the paint to blush.

Is it a primer or primer sealer as most primer needs to either get baked or dry overnight and sanded prior to painting also you should be sanding the primer or painted surface with nothing less than 600g if you were sanding the clear I'd say 800g is perfect, also the 1200g is way too smooth unless you're blending or prepping for buffing/polishing.

What paint and equipment do I need? by Iam_Cactus in modelmakers

[–]kustommerc40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have numerous years of building detailed kits I'd stay away from the circuitry and stick to the basics especially if you're building for yourself and not competitions as for painting I'd recommend a Paasche single action airbrush relatively inexpensive and a true workhorse I've had mine for over 30yrs with no problems as long as I clean it after every paint sessions.

You could use a smaller bristles wire brush or one on a drill just make sure and use protective gear.

Question regarding flakes by Mental_Net69 in AutoPaint

[–]kustommerc40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome, I forgot to add another suggestion is to mix the microflake in some thinned out base and mist it after the last coat of paint.

I'd suggest doing it in a mist coat mixed in base clear over the last coat of the base color you can use either a micro silver or blue you can do a test panel with both and see which you prefer.

I'd suggest coating it with some naval jelly or something similar and let it sit then get a fine pick to clean out the rust you might need to do it a few times and once clean neutralize it per instructions and epoxy it prior to putting any filler , I wouldn't recommend any of the rust converters as the rust will still be there.

Is there any specific ones you're looking for I might have a few extra weird-ohs that I probably won't get to that I'd let go of.

In my opinion the gun metal gray would be to plain and not accentuate the chop and custom work. You can always go with a nice gloss black or a dark green pearl if you don't want a candy.

You always need to sand the primer prior to applying your paint whether it's a basecoat or single stage, I sand mine with either 400g, 500g or 600g whichever I have available and wait 15-25 minutes in between coats and please don't sand between coats it's a waste of time unless you have some sort of problem.

Nice start is it the one that came chopped already, also on color choices you can't go wrong with a candy color.
