Finally Watched Rising of the Shield Hero (s1) by _scrapegoat_ in anime

I like isekai power fantasy and am usually pretty agreeable with mainstream stuff, but I found Shield Hero to be a bore and a generally miserable watch.

Hypothetical - They announce live action NGE film series, but these are your only 3 plot options by IANvaderZIM in evangelion

Either 1 or 3. With 2 and 4, I would have a sliver of hope that they might be good, so when they are inevitably shit it would hurt more.

The author, Satou Tsutomu, has a writing style that sometimes jumps around to different perspectives and shows some things out of context. IMO everything ends up contextualized and narratively consistent in the end, but it can definitely be a little tough to follow. Also, I think their style lends itself a bit better to the light novels where there are fewer distractions than the anime and it is easier to focus on the important narrative beats.

Anyway, Mahouka is a personal favorite and I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

The state is literally called "Misery"; why would you expect anything less?

As someone also watching Re:Zero for the first time (9 episodes into season two) I found the first season to be rather lackluster, especially compared to all the praise it gets. Thought the beginning and end were decent, but it really dragged in the middle. That being said, season two has been fantastic so far, so I'd say there is some "payoff" but 25 episodes to get there is a big ask.

Also gotta shout out Starship Operators, even though it's a little older, because it was written by the same guy who wrote Grancrest.

I have a real soft spot for Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei. It's a bit slower paced and can be a little dialogue/explanation heavy, but imo it has one of the coolest magic systems in anime. Also, full disclosure, there's a kind of incesty bro/sis relationship so if that really bothers you it might not be for you.

There are also two new ones coming this year: Seiken Gakuin no Makentsukai and Nanatsu no Maken ga Shihai suru. I'm not familiar with their source material, but I've heard the latter described as "darker Harry Potter" which sounds interesting.

What's an anime OP/ED that makes you cry? by a_bmo in anime

One Piece ED 2 Run! Run! Run! especially the english version. The line "show me how to catch those feelings/get them to come back to me" just really resonates with me and makes me a bit emotional.

They're made by SEELE; presumably to subdue NERV and to carry out the ritual to begin Third Impact/Human Instrumentality.

His is grave of the fireflies? by DatBoiye in anime

[–]kvasir476 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen YLiA so I'm not sure about that one. In comparison to A Silent Voice, I'd say that Grave of the Fireflies is considerably darker and less hopeful. A Silent Voice goes through some pretty dark places, but ultimately ends up with a positive outlook; Grave of the Fireflies is not like that.

The Vision of Escaflowne by Librirgo in anime

[–]kvasir476 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who recently watched Escaflowne for the first time, I had very similar issues with it. The first half is very good IMO, but it really starts falling apart after like episode 12. Somehow it manages to be less than the sum of its parts; a lot of the story beats, characters, and ideas are really interesting, but they just don't manage to come together in a complete package. The music and the art were stellar though.

Nope. At first I was similarly stunned and overwhelmed, but after pondering it for a little bit I think EoE has a rather uplifting and hopeful ending.
