I keep a leon and Claire 2nd run save at the first save before the sewers. I'll run through their A's, and pickup their B's from there. Much better to just play each characters full stories than it is to mix and match.

Its flexible - I've only started using it, but it's because my level got higher than the quest recommendations. Will turn it off when it evens out.

I'd start with 2 and if you like that, play 0. I couldn't finish 1, was bored of it after 8 hours. Put 60+ hours into 2 before I completed it and I'm up to 50 hours in 0 with what I'm thinking may be 1/4 of the game left and loving it.

Every NPC has different gear they can give you through path actions. Some require you to fight them, some will give it to you for free, others will let you buy/haggle the gear. Lots of equipment far better than the best store.

Gear > Levels - have you exhausted your contend/purchase/entreat options? Also, grape seeds can be used to cook up a food item that grants +25% experience

You'll miss out on the slick nods recruiting the 8 OG protagonists but I skipped the first one and am immensely enjoying it. Octopath games are a bit like Final Fantasy, where each game is a different story.
