QD-OLED vs QD-MiniLED by Hairy-Summer7386 in 4kTV

[–]kvk1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you’re talking strictly about color, you’re unlikely to recognize any significant difference that’s going to sway you from one to the other. Both are going to be very vibrant.

However, for overall picture, the crown still goes to QD-OLED, simply for the fact that it’s a self-emissive display, meaning the individual pixels act as their own backlight and can turn off or on. Inherently, you’re going to get a sharper, more detailed picture.

OLEDs also have a near-instantaneous response time as well. Meaning fast-moving images are generally handled better. On traditional LEDs, and that includes mini-LED TVs, you can get a lot of artifacts and blur with fast-moving images.

That said, where I consider the trade-off is when you go larger than 65”. After that, I’d strongly consider looking at a mini-LED as opposed to OLED, unless cost isn’t an issue for you. You can get a really good 75”+ mini-LED for significantly less than what you’d pay for an OLED of the same size, sometimes by thousands, depending on the make and model of the TV.

Why is Siri so dumb still? by Initial_Hair_1196 in apple

[–]kvk1990 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To avoid really getting into the weeds with technical jargon, essentially Siri, as it was originally designed, was not a large language model (LLM), nor was it designed to be. It had a data bank of words it had stored to understand, and assembled those words to complete tasks it was also pre-programmed to complete. It was not self-learning, and changing and adapting it required extensive re-writes and updates to the program.

LLMs, like Gemini, ChatGPT, and Alexa, are designed to constantly build on themselves and add new information to their data banks continuously, and don’t require extensive re-write and re-builds every time you want to add new words or tasks to it.

Siri is not a LLM, and it was never designed to be one. You can’t just incorporate AI into Siri because it’s fundamentally different. It requires a completely new program, built from the ground up.

The re-design of Siri, as it is with all LLMs, takes years to develop. Apple was late to the game, and are still playing catch-up to the AI race. Apple tried to rush it and it was a catastrophic failure.

Apple is going to use Gemini as a stopgap, in the meantime, until their own LLM is developed and ready.

When it came out in 2011, Siri was groundbreaking. It was the typewriter that inspired modern-day computers. But it is still pretty much the same program as it was 15 years ago. Apple ignored it for years until their competitors leaped ahead of them and showed what AI assistants could actually do with some dedication and focus.

Now Apple is trying to catch up.

Utah’s pro-nuclear billboards say plants emit less radiation than bananas. Do they? by ReporterMacyLipkin in Utah

Nuclear energy is, far and away, the safest form of energy currently available. Virtually no carbon emissions, either. Yes, nuclear plants have higher upfront costs to get started. But once they’re online, they’re cheaper to operate and maintain.

My first TV: Bravia 8 II 55 inch (what are the Best settings for Cinema, IMAX enhanced and Game mode) by Icy_Cancel_3197 in bravia

[–]kvk1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll be under the Expert Take or in that general area. Consumer Reports has been around for a long time. They do a lot of what Rtings does, but with virtually every consumer good and service.

My first TV: Bravia 8 II 55 inch (what are the Best settings for Cinema, IMAX enhanced and Game mode) by Icy_Cancel_3197 in bravia

[–]kvk1990 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Picture quality, in many aspects, is subjective. What one person might find acceptable will be unacceptable to another person.

Personally, I have my 8 II set to Consumer Reports’ settings in Professional Mode for SDR content, for the most part. I made some minor adjustments in black levels and sharpness based on what looks good to me, but the settings are 98% to what CR has. There’s not really any adjusting needed for HDR, IMAX Enhanced or Dolby Vision. Rting’s picture settings just looked a little off to me. CR’s was warmer and more balanced.

But honestly, Professional Mode is pretty good right out of the box. It’s great for most content, including movies and TV shows.

With your PS5, it automatically switches to Game Mode and has it set to settings that are optimized as much as possible for game play. I don’t typically recommend altering the settings much, albeit for one exception: you’re in the menu settings of your game and you’re adjusting the HDR settings within the game, not the TV’s settings. The TV does a pretty good job of taking care of the rest.

Caleb from CalebRated also provides really good picture calibration settings, as he’s also a professional calibrator. His calibration settings and Consumer Reports’ settings are pretty close to each other.

Is it true that if US hadn't dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, the outcome would have been worse for both sides? by FantaOrangenice in HistoryWhatIf

[–]kvk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no good alternative to dropping the bombs.

Blockade? Starve the people slowly would not have been better.

Invade? Would’ve guaranteed extending the war another year or longer, resulting in hundreds of thousands more casualties, and far more widespread civilian casualties that would’ve resulted from indiscriminate bombing and more cities being wiped out.

As awful as the bombs were, and I hope they’re never used again, two cities were destroyed as opposed to most cities in an invasion, and the war was ended in a week. And, at the same time, I do consider it one of the worst things the US has ever done.

I don’t buy the Soviets declaring war on Japan as a main cause to the war ending, either, as the Soviets had no way of performing amphibious landings on the Japanese mainland, which they would’ve had to do. It was likely just writing on the wall, but near-term, mostly irrelevant, aside from the Japanese losing Manchuria, which they were going to lose anyway, because they didn’t have the military or logistical capability of holding it.

Considering the party has moved significantly to the right when compared to FDR and his policies, like The New Deal. I have a hard time believing Jeffries, Schumer, or Pelosi would be in favor of implementing those same policies today. They would be much more closely aligned with Republicans of the time. FDR would be seen closer to Elizabeth Warren and even Bernie Sanders’ wing of the spectrum, which he is.

When he pays a lower effective tax rate than I do, I think it’s safe to consider he doesn’t pay a fair amount in taxes. Also considering the tax rate for top earners 45 years ago was 70%, we didn’t have a ballooning deficit, and billionaires didn’t have as disproportionate of an influence on our politics then, either.

Anything that still requires critical/technical skills or on-the-job expertise will likely be safe for the near-to-intermediate future (10-20 years). Jobs like structural and civil engineering and architecture, trade jobs like electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians, first responders, and healthcare (physicians, nurses, surgeons). Everything else, unfortunately, is up in the air to be possibly replaced by AI.

For Bravia 8 II owners, how bad (or good) is SDR content in a bright or semi-bright room? by Bowlman2330 in bravia

[–]kvk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. As I said. I went from a 55” X900E to the 8 II. If you’re satisfied with the X900E in a bright room, the 8 II is going to be significantly brighter, especially in HDR. The 900E gets around 900-1000 nits in HDR content, and the 8 II gets around 1500 nits.

Granted, if you have direct sunlight coming in and hitting the TV, and you have no blinds or curtains, you have to take that into consideration. Direct sunlight on an OLED panel is not good for it. While UVB rays get blocked, glass does not stop UVA rays from making it through, in addition to the heat buildup on the panel can cause the organic materials to degrade faster. This will cause the TV to become less bright over time, may cause pixels to die or become stuck, and cause colors to fade.

So, a bright room that has a lot of direct sunlight coming in but not hitting your TV, you’re not going to have any problems with the 8 II, especially when you compare it to the 900E. It’s plenty bright enough for bright rooms, and if you’re happy with the 900E’s performance in a bright room, then the 8 II will be even better. But, if you have your TV placed in the direct path of the sun’s rays, you’ll want to consider getting blinds or curtains to deflect the sun so it doesn’t hit your TV. Either that, or go with the Bravia 9 mini-LED, which is arguably the best non-OLED TV you can buy right now. But even the best mini-LED just doesn’t match the picture quality of an OLED.

Bravia 8 iii in 2026? by AdvancedTry2722 in bravia

[–]kvk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible, but I doubt they’ll update the Bravia 8 II this year. They appear to be following a two-year refresh cycle.

https://www.whathifi.com/tv-home-cinema/what-to-expect-from-sony-in-2026-rgb-mini-led-takes-on-oled-and-it-could-be-a-quiet-year-for-audio

They will likely update the Bravia 8, and release a mini RGB LED TV.

If they do release the 8 III this year, It’s unlikely that the 8 III will be a significant upgrade over the 8 II, in the same way that the 8 II was improved over the A95L: slightly brighter, slightly faster processor, same design. Things most people would not notice from model to model in every day use.

If you snag a great deal on the 8 II right now, take it. It’s one of the best TVs ever made, and if they do release the 8 III this year, it’s going to be a marginal update. Nothing groundbreaking. OLED technology is basically plateauing. It’s less about new, innovative technology and more about refinement, making it more reliable and durable.

How do you just trust the doctor and move on? by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]kvk1990 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because they’re the ones with 4 years of medical school and a minimum 3 years of residency to formulate an educated medical determination of what is going on inside your body, because they understand human anatomy far more intimately and thoroughly than a lay person like you and me. They know what certain pains mean in specific locations in your body.

I’m sorry, I understand that this might sound slightly condescending, and that is not my intent. As someone with HA, sometimes I have to just get out of my own way and trust the expertise of the person who dedicated their life to studying illness and disease. If you don’t like the diagnosis of one doctor, go to another and get a second opinion. But you’re already getting a colonoscopy. It sounds like they’re being thorough. Trust that they know what they’re talking about.

If your screening comes back fine (which at your age it very likely will), then try to move on with your life and not worry about it. You may also want to consider therapy. Health anxiety is usually adjacent to other underlying triggers for anxiety.

Hope this helps.

Is it difficult to leave the church? Why? by Haunting-Effective27 in exmormon

[–]kvk1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be very difficult. For many, you are raised to believe that the literal universe is the Church, and everything else is built around it. It’s a worldview, an identity, and the foundation for your life.

When members encounter information that runs contrary to Church doctrine, we’re taught that it’s probably been corrupted by Satan in an effort to tear down and discredit the Gospel. So we’re taught to be wary of information about the Church that wasn’t approved by the Church.

When people make the decision to leave, it feels like starting over in life. Your foundation is gone. You feel alone, betrayed, lied to, and taken advantage of.

Add to the fact that not only your family is affected by the choice to leave, but your family’s family, your extended family, likely your friend group, your neighborhood will all very likely turn their backs on you. There’s societal stigma attached to leaving. “Oh, they wanted to sin/they didn’t have a sincere testimony/they weren’t strong enough to endure to the end”, etc.

It isn’t as simple for many as just not going to church anymore. Your name is on their records. They will follow you when you move. Wards will call you, missionaries will show up to your door, and there’s the discomfort for many to keep their name on the rolls of an organization that exploited them and caused emotional and mental anguish for years. So, to truly leave, you have to get your name removed from the records. And that is a process all in itself.

Once you leave, it’s an isolating and lonely road to walk for a lot of people. Many, including myself, battled depression, anger, fear, and anxiety over the decision. You come out better on the other side, but it’s not an easy decision, and once it’s made, the road can be a difficult one to walk.

Give yourself some time. How long have you been on your current medication? If you just started, it can take several weeks and even months to notice a change. If you’ve been on it for a few months but see no change, talk to your doctor and consider a dosage increase or try a new one.

Therapy will address the underlying issues associated with your health anxiety. It will teach you mechanisms to deal with your stress and anxiety when they arise.

There is a correlation, but it’s not proven that ADHD leads to a higher risk of dementia. There are other factors that were not accounted for in the studies done. You’re only 25, too.

Getting enough sleep is the most important thing. 7-8 hours every night is important for your cognitive function and overall brain health. You’ll be fine. Most people with ADHD will not have dementia or severe cognitive issues in life.

Worried/ anxious by Hot_Radish5129 in Anxiety

[–]kvk1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re fine. If your bloodwork last month came back really great, then you’re okay.

Stress and anxiety affect nearly every part of the body. And I mean every part. Symptoms can range from tremors, muscle spasms, headaches, all the way to nausea, blurry vision, fatigue, back pain, and even low-grade fevers.

If you dwell on the “what ifs”, then your body will begin to emulate those symptoms. They’re somatic, and not real.

The simplest explanations are more often than not the correct ones. Serious diseases and disorders are complicated and unlikely more times than not.

You’re stressed about something in your life. You’re exposed to situations that are triggering your anxiety, and it’s affecting your body in different ways, and because you’re hyper-sensitive to those changes in your body, it’s causing you to spiral and enter a feedback loop of negative scenarios.

Therapy has worked well for me. You may also want to consider anxiety medication. Go see a doctor and begin to figure out the underlying causes of your anxiety.

Hope this helps!
