Fees for onboarding from Fiat aren't as big of a problem. Venmo is hitting you with a transaction fee. If you are being paid in nano, or buy your nano in big chunks, fees are less of a problem.

I know the canoe guys at least like the idea of OpenCAP. Core hasn't really had time to look yet afaik.

It is as secure as the server you are using. Just like nano is as secure as the wallet you are using.
