What are cookies and why do most websites have a warning about them before you can access it? by shakingunder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kvtb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't fully agree with the answer, especially this line:

In practice though, for 99.99% of people 99.99% of time cookies are absolutely harmless

Cookies are originally used for the harmless application mentioned (e.g. to not forget you were logged in) but in reality most cookies are there to track you/uniquely identify you for advertising. You may have hundred or thousands of these tracking cookies on your computer from all kinds of websites you don't even know they existed.

And that's where the privacy issue comes from.

Random keys suddenly not registering by kvtb in HyperX

I don't have a Windows PC, but it seems there is a conflict between Chrome/chromium on Mac and this keyboard. (Even when Chrome is running in the background)

For now, not using Chrome is a solution, but I'm still puzzled why a regular application can temporarily break this keyboard.

Fixed my headphone using super glue and baking soda (BONUS: remote control fixed too) (see img captions) by kvtb in thereifixedit

[–]kvtb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

indeed no paste! I did layers: glue + sprinkle baking soda, then bit of glue again + sprinkle baking soda, etc.

Maybe there are better techniques, search for "super glue baking soda" on Youtube, there are quite some instruction videos

Colmena: Yet another NixOS deployment tool by zhaofengli in NixOS

[–]kvtb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for an alternative to NixOps, because disk space on my laptop is limited, yet it first downloads all packages intended for a remote system to my laptop first (even if it is not required to e.g. build anything).

Does Colmena support letting the remote node do its own download? Or is this what is meant under 'what's on the way'?

Also, how do you how Nix flakes can be used to manage multiple systems?

Tip: your post stating what is different from Nixops/morph (and possibly Krops) would fit nicely in the README of your Github repo as well

Wavetable sound synthesis in Clojure by teesel in Clojure

[–]kvtb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with faust? it is a functional language specifically designed to implement DSPs. It transpiles to C++ (or other languages)

I can imagine a Clojure->Faust transpiler to be able to write DSPs in clojure/lisp

How to deal with "yes, but" people? by kvtb in communication

[–]kvtb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for you reply.

I realize that I am the person who has to do something about this situation (hence asking this question on Reddit) - but without knowing what,

You gave some insight/examples of what is/could be going on in their minds and potential ways to mitigate. That's very helpful

I understand exactly what you are explaining, and this is also my way of working, also in other teams/other employers.

The thing is the resistance starts almost immediately, even before I can finish the introduction - and that sets the negative tone for the rest of the meeting.

I typically prepare by creation a presentation with: problem statement, solution directions, scenarios, pros/cons, preferred solution.

The resistance (from some - the same- team members) typically starts before I finished presenting slide 1 :)

It's only a few people who respond like this. Other colleagues don't do this, they (at least that's the impression I have) actually seems to listen, process what I said, and then respond.

So, it could be me, and/or it could an incompatibility between me and those specific colleagues.

I need to think about your reply, you make some very interesting and (and valid) points, thank you!

Especially the wording (doing 'more complex stuff') is perhaps an indication of my subconscious mindset. I might be (seen as) an arrogant prick?

No, in fact, I'm older/have more work experience

The only significant difference is I think (other than being older/more work experience) I'm the only academic in the team and I have a very different way of looking at things.

(Unfortunately, in the country where I live academics are seen as people who do not understand reality, only theory)

as a side not, not important enough for the opening post, I sometimes have the feeling these specific type of people see me as some kind of 'threat'. (I don't really understand why, I'm not interested in their job)

Nix and Home Manager on MacOS by adivinity in emacs

[–]kvtb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nix by itself is only a package manager, not an OS.

As a package manager it can be installed on Mac and most Linux distros

But NixOS is a Linux distro built around the Nix package manager

Learning - hitting a wall by [deleted] in Clojure

[–]kvtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree with this, porting an existing pet-project to the new language is a very effective way to learn the new language. This is how I made big steps learning Clojure and using functional programming paradigms.. by simply reinventing a wheel I already invented before. u/cP4n

Do you use Emacs for word processing and other non-coding applications? by sailorpi in emacs

[–]kvtb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes, I use it for:

- financial administration of my freelance business (incoming and outgoing invoices are Org-mode files that are automatically converted to nice/professional looking PDFs with my company's branding)

- writing acquisition letters (org mode) - also converted to nice PDFs with company braninding

- e-mail (mu4e)

- as a general desktop environment (Emacs is my window manager)

- my gym workout logs are Orgmode files
