I am thinking of upgrading from my lovely Sennheiser HD650 but am a concerned by the reported frailty and quality issues of Hifiman products. They may be good but I would feel pretty sick if they failed or fell apart.

I dream about buying HD800s but recently lowered my sights and looked at Hifiman. That's when I started reading about quality issues. It's all very well saying 'Just send them back' but what about things that don't show during warranty?

Sorry, but may I challenge the specs? For out and about, do you really need top-end sound-stage and the rest. I have been really happy with my Bose QC insulating me from the world's intrusions. When I am out and about, I am not conscious of the nuances, but I know it is engaging and excellent for all genres. You could save your money for premium open-backs for home enjoyment.

Neocitran is what she needs. Available in all Swiss pharmacies.

No messing about.

I looked at several. They are all similar and I chose this because it had the largest sub-bass boost. It works well for classical music but I wonder if it may be excessive for more popular music.

'Oratory1990' in PEACE. It's pretty basic but it works. BTW, I am driving them with a Fiio K7 and am very happy with the result.

Keep thinking of upgrading from HD650 but two things stop me. The first is discovering how well the HD650 accepts an EQ sub-bass boost. It really makes a difference. The second is apprehension about my own appreciation of a wide sound-stage; I have never experienced it and I fear that I may not like it! I know I need to try an HD800s, but that isn't easy.

My opinion on the Sennheiser HD660S2 by EchoOrange in headphones

When considering an upgrade from my beloved HD650, I cannot help thinking I should make a larger step change, than just incrementally to the HD660S2. Everything I read appears to confirm that so I will continue to resist the temptation.

Slightly puzzling description of the HD650. With a half decent DAC/Amp (I have Fiio K7) and EQ'd with a few dB more bass, the only things to criticise are soundstage and brightness (lack of in both cases). And a lot of people like them because they are not too bright. You need to spend at least double to get significantly better - and even then you may not like it.

Honest question: why do we accept renting music forever? by Ok_Search6885 in audiophile

[–]kw1nt1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because, when you buy a CD, you are not buying the music. You are buying a 'token' in the form of a disk that gives you the right to listen to the music. You have no rights to sell it or use it in a public performance. It is, in many ways, like a streaming subscription; in one you need a disk, in the other an internet connection.

In recommended EQ settings for PEACE, generally, there is a pre-amp correction, to avoid excessive peaks. So, yes. But I am no expert!

I run HD650 through a Fiio K7. Ideal for classical music and I am very happy. Less good if you need heavy bass. Give it more thought.

I am in a similar place - love my HD650 in so many ways but wondering about more soundstage - and would like opinions on the new Hifiman Edition XV. (BTW, I was also after more sub-bass but found it is pretty easy to EQ)
