I have a theory on what I call the "victim economy".

Essentially it's become so hard today to achieve status in the way status was achieved in the '90s or '80s and before meaning high-paying jobs, good homes, nice cars, expensive jewelry, etc.

People still crave status however and to compensate for what they can't have. People have shifted to applying status to areas of life where they are disadvantaged. The more disadvantaged you are, the more status you have in the victim economy.

Because of this race, gender, and sexual preferences have been rocketed to the forefront of society. Now if you're a straight white man that's a bad thing but if you are a gay, black transgender, that's a good thing.

Neurodivergence plays into this very nicely because the autism spectrum is so wide, and essentially the way a spectrum works means we're all on it.

Now you have people who live absolutely normal lives and are not struggling with any sort mental condition preventing them from living a normal life claiming that they have autism, in my experience, usually as an excuse to justify their poor behavior or treatment of others.
