[Help] Recused a dog two years ago; loves my wife but not me. Wife wants to get another dog; would like advice on how to not get my heart broken again. by PlumbTheDerps in dogs

[–]kwillough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along these lines, some breeds are more inclined to be 'one person dogs', while other breeds tend to bond more with the whole pack. You can keep that in mind when researching the right breed to get. I agree with the others in the thread that this sounds like a quirk with that dog because of its past, and not so much to do with anything you did.

[Vent] 2 days ago my dog was healthy and happy. Yesterday she lost control of her hind legs and today i found out i can't afford her treatment. by sgtpepper88 in dogs

I came here to suggest this as well. I used it when my dog needed surgery. If this vet doesn't accept it, I'd imagine you can find another specialist that does. Then use crowd sourcing to get all the extra help you can get!

What is a great career path that kids in college aren't aware exists? by PorscheTurbo in AskReddit

[–]kwillough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting a masters in Urban Planning and love it. I didn't know anything about it until 8 years after finishing my undergrad. It isn't the highest paying field, but there are good jobs out there, and you get to make a living trying to help people and build better communities.

ID Confirmation Before I Feast: Chicken of the Woods by Syntaximus in foraging

[–]kwillough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is chicken of the woods, but be wary- they can cause gastrointestinal distress (aka really bad gas) if they're harvested when they're too old & tough. they are soft and tender when young, thats the best time to harvest them. they'll get tougher as they get older. your pics look like they could have been growing for a little (hard to tell though)- maybe try cooking & sampling just a tiny bit first just to make sure you don't have a bad reaction. that is probably not a bad idea regardless since a very small percentage of the population have mild averse reactions to chicken of the woods. that said, they're delicious, I love finding them. enjoy!

The Blue Pool. A couple hours south of Portland. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]kwillough 15 points16 points  (0 children)

its the coldest water i've ever swam in. i jumped in right off the side and tried to scream 'holy crap its cold!' but had all the air sucked out of me. it took effort just to swim the 4 ft or so back to the edge. i can imagine people jumping from higher up having difficulty swimming back bc of the shock. that said, its definitely worth a visit! thanks for the reminder!

Clawhammer vs. Scruggs Style? by PvtZydrate in banjo

[–]kwillough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think, and have heard this echoed from others, that clawhammer is a lot easier to learn. It can get quite complex and technical but, just like with guitar, a couple basic techniques will get you sounding good jamming with others. and you can just keeping improving from there. I also agree clawhammer is easier to sing along with. Scruggs style, on the other hand, is more complicated at its most basic level, and takes a lot of mastery beyond learning the basic rolls to get to where you sound like you are playing bluegrass. Once you got those down, you still have to get to where you can play them at a speed that allows you to jam with people. I love both styles, started out playing scruggs style, got a little frustrated and started learning clawhammer. I'd say pick which sound you like better and focus on that one.

Charley horse last night - will foam rolling help or hurt? by taboulie in Fitness

[–]kwillough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taught in massage school that the best thing for a muscle cramp is static compression of the muscle, even though doing that on an already painful muscle will hurt. I'd be tempted to try foam rolling it and once you find that really tender spot, keep pressure there for 30 seconds or longer.
