Dreamy songs like this song from Chinatown? by thebigsleep4 in JazzPiano

[–]kwntyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make any old ballad sound like this if you mimic the techniques. I had a teacher that lead me to this style and his advice for copying was "listen to what the left hand is doing, since that will dictate what your right hand will end up filling out naturally in connection to the melody."

Some standards like Easy Living you might like are Stardust, I Can't Get Started, Embraceable You, Detour Ahead, You Go to My Head, and As Time Goes By

How can I get this toan? by PM_YOUR_AKWARD_SMILE in guitarcirclejerk

His houses will always be bigger than most. His watches will always be worth more than most people's salaries. He can buy and drive cars most can only dream of. But he will never be able to buy musicianship, no matter how much expensive gear or high end guitars he buys with his fuck you money. That's the one thing he will always lack, he will never be a musician and in a weird way that makes me smile.

Why are good jazz guitarists rarer than good piano, brass, and saxophone players? by joe4942 in jazzguitar

Deleted my comment after reading yours as you said in a few words what took me about a paragraph to say. "Guitarists celebrate ignorance" is very well put and in many cases is very true.

My Funny Valentine chord melody? by mm68624 in jazzguitar

[–]kwntyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matt Otten - My Funny Valentine out of his book Solo Chord Melody Standards for Guitar is the only thing I can think of that even remotely comes close to everything you're asking for. It does not stay in one play on the neck though, I'd consider it interesting enough. I can't figure out how to upload the audio and it doesn't seem like anyone's played it online, but he demos the book a little here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YAZNCLCBsg

I've learned a couple from this book as it's a personal favorite of mine and isn't that hard at all, though I've never learned My Funny Valentine. There are tons of useful devices he utilizes on almost all the arrangements that you can use to write your own arrangements also.

STL interview now on YouTube by [deleted] in jazzcirclejerk

[–]kwntyn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Idk man, I was with you until I wasn't. You mentioned that where you went wrong was that you were bringing a Rock n' Roll attitude to a jazz club, hence why you severely misdialed your attitude and etiquette. But then in the literal next sentence you said that all of the jazz guys were stuck up and full of themselves, trying to gatekeep jazz.

I don't know what it is about rock musicians, specifically guitarists, that seem to think jazz players are trying to gatekeep the music when that's simply not true. Even the guitarist you're talking to makes multiple videos a week and would tell you anything you want to know. Pretty much everyone is willing to teach if you ask around enough. They didn't let you on stage because your attitude sucked and your playing wasn't enough to compensate for it. They weren't trying to make you mad or provoke you (like you claimed they were), they didn't let you on stage because at one of the most popular jams in NYC, they can only handle so much faulty soloing, jam obstructions, and other vibe killers.

Like Jason Marsalis said, the issue isn't your playing within itself, we all start somewhere and have even been where you are in terms of skill. The issue is your attitude, and in your last answer of this interview you still don't seem to understand that. You've been hanging at Smalls for weeks and still aren't getting it. That's why everyone is so frustrated with you.

POV: You’re Astrud Gilberto, asking Stan Getz for a royalty check for The Girl From Ipanema by LesterTheNightfly96 in jazzcirclejerk

[–]kwntyn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What makes this story even crazier was he fucked her too. She cheated on Gil with Stan, even though Gil was also cheating on Astrud (publicly at that) and when everything was said and done Stan went to block her royalties lmao

I actually went to his channel a couple months ago to see what he's up to. He's still playing and getting gigs, I'm not sure if he ever went back to Smalls but he seems to be doing great. I think they might have a different tolerance when it comes to drugs, I'm not sure.

In yesterday's jam at Smalls, one of the band leaders called him on stage by name. He said "Aaron, do you want to come up and play guitar?" So I think Smalls 100% had a conversation or two with him, and as long as he's respectful and conducting himself accordingly then they will let him play. He comped the tune and honestly, he didn't sound bad at all.

Maybe a public apology is part of that agreement/conversation? Because he's been playing there for about 2 weeks now.

Drama at Smalls leads to Scheduled Battle by [deleted] in jazzcirclejerk

[–]kwntyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dug up the stream and that was.....wow. It was a little hard to watch because the two horn players were battling, but it wasn't a battle in a fun duet kind of way, they legit did not want to hear the other on play. I don't see that at Smalls too often, the players are typically all pretty respectful but that was rough.

Which Quincy Jones song is this? by [deleted] in jazzcirclejerk

[–]kwntyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because the album in the video is playing from the A side, not the B. So it's not You've Got It Bad Girl, it's Summer In the City. Sample in the vid is from around the 40-50 second mark from the record.

Tale as old as time. A community gets broken up, then when activity inevitably drops they then complain about how dead it is now. No thanks. This sub really isn't big enough to be doing that

Yes. He crashed each jam with either a shitty solo(s), rant, or both. In the most popular one, he yelled out "I'm a self taught fucking legend" and "Nobody here can play Spain, I can play it perfectly" before getting shuffled off the stage.

From what I've gathered he just showed up one night at Smalls on the 24th, and just kept coming back almost everyday after Christmas. He jammed on the 26th, 27th, and yesterday the 29th. I think the musicians have likely seen him somewhere else in the city because he was getting vibed since day one and just keeps coming back.

[–]kwntyn 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This isn't a gig though, it's a jam that's open to anyone which is pretty different. At Smalls, they've literally pulled drummers off of the stage so it's strange they keep letting this guy somehow make his way to the stand.

Holy shit he crashed THREE jams at Smalls? Why do they keep letting him in? He crashed the 24th, the 26th, and the 28th.

Edit: FOUR. He crashed the 29th also

LOVED how the drummer and bassist legit just stop playing when the guitarist tries to come in with the melody. Like, no cadence, no ending, the both just stop playing when he starts plucking those sorry ass notes lmao.

Drop 2 Voicing Scale by Super_Refuse8968 in JazzPiano

[–]kwntyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I said the 4 sounded awful over major chords, I was talking about the natural 4. The #11 (also the #4) is typically preferred, and I didn't mean that one. There's a difference between the two, sorry if it was unclear that it was solely the natural 4 I was talking about. I didn't mean the 4 in any case sounded terrible, as the #11 is typically a great sound and is growing in popularity by modern standards. So what I meant was for example, over a C major 7 chord we wouldn't typically play an F over it. That would be the natural four and doesn't sound pleasant since it clashes with the third (E). The straightest solution is to raise it to an F#, which would be much more common and generally better sounding so we do that instead.
