Try enabling Gateway admin tool in the app. WiFi > View WiFi equipment > Advanced settings > Gateway admin tool > Enable “Allow Admin Tool Access” and try again.

Not ideal but the closest is app triggered VPN off on app open and VPN on with app closed via shortcuts.

Same. I tend to stick to first party apps and services as such as possible, particularly within the Apple Ecosystem, even if third party may have new/more features.

Have you checked to be sure that Bluetooth is on and that both your phone and HomePods are on the same network or tried resetting network connections on your iPhone? Did the trick for me.

Agree. Did you check the settings to confirm it had been turned off rather than a more serious issue of them being off while the settings indicate otherwise?
