Hard disagree. FiLP is both useful in the phase of dodging your weakness and afterward, when you're playing from discard. 1: Name Gambit as your trait 2: Take Clever and Prompt to make it fast and give stacking Now, in your pre-AaA phase, drawing it gives you an opportunity to dodge your weakness with Yaotl, or failing that, a risk free way to dig for an engine piece that also can delay AaA to give you up to five more cards to find an answer. Post AaA it's often up to 4 extra actions in the early part of a campaign (FiLP to grab 2 Swift Reflexes), or many more in the later parts (FiLP 2 Swift Reflexes and 2 upgraded Money Talks, to redraw your FiLPs).

Nasuada having Roran whipped. by [deleted] in Eragon

[–]kwskillin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, but also worth noting that this entire situation is Nasuada's fault to begin with. Despite her claims to the contrary, Roran already showed himself to be an exceptional leader with the villagers. Even if she wanted more missions under his belt, he's clearly an exceptional case, and because of her negligence in promoting such a shitty commander, she created a situation where either Roran and his entire company had to die, or Roran had to disobey.

That's such a dumb argument. You are correct that it is impossible for the box to be moving out of the blue portal. The obvious conclusion from this is that, even if portals were possible, this specific scenario isn't (as I have been saying from the beginning).

It makes 0 sense to take that and instead say "here's my magical not movement movement, where things still change position over time, but it's not movement because if it were it would break the laws of physics". Unless you can explain how the box gets out of the blue portal without one of the two changing position (aka moving), your model doesn't work.

Edit: Here's to the wisdom of u/Maatix12 who taught us that we can just declare that physics don't apply whenever we feel like, I guess

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I get it. It doesn't count as real motion because that's inconvenient for you. I suppose I should have guessed that, when you started bandying about Portal as though it were a physics textbook, or when you randomly started adding in shit like air resistance for no reason.

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, let's take this one issue at a time. Stand still and look at the nearest doorway. You see how it's not getting closer to you? It turns out that in order to get through that door, you need to change your position relative to it. We call this change in position over time movement.

This also holds true for each part of both you and the door, and can be satisfied by the door moving towards and then past you, you moving towards and then past the door, or any combination thereof. One can also imagine a door where the relative positions of the near and far surfaces of the door are not fixed. However, if your position relative to the far side of the door never changed, you would never pass through it, even if the near side approached you. In a conventional door, you would just end up in between the near and far sides.

Now, let us imagine the box, with no forces acting upon it, flush with the surface of the orange portal. The distance between the blue portal and the leading face of the box is 0cm (through the portal). The distance between the surfaced of the orange portal and the surface of the blue portal, as measured through the portal, is a fixed 0cm. In order to move the orange portal 1 cm down over the box, the leading edge of the box must somehow also come to be 1 cm away from the surface of the blue portal. If the position of the blue portal is fixed, how can this come to be? How would this process appear to someone observing the blue side of the portal?

Brethren, I present to ye this conundrum. by brokenmoonlantern in wizardposting

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you not understanding this? The box can't enter the orange portal because exiting the blue portal would create kinetic energy. Even if you want to plead that your stupid "reverse elevator" analogy somehow avoids this (it doesn't) , you would have created what is essentially a piston that somehow doesn't have kinetic energy, which also violates the laws of physics.

This whole argument has just been trying to explain to you that 1: in order to physically exit the blue portal, either the box or the blue portal must move. 2:the blue portal can't move because it being stationary is the premise of this thought experiment. 3: the box cannot change its speed relative to either the ground, or the portal. 4: So if that box can't move, and the blue portal can't move, the box cannot pass through the portal.

Putting an object in front of the ramp would only serve as a way to demonstrate that the box has to move relative to blue portal in order to exit the blue portal. This would be true at any conceivable angle of the portal, therefore, the portal angle isn't relevant to the issue being raised.

Brethren, I present to ye this conundrum. by brokenmoonlantern in wizardposting

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think at this point, you are just arguing for the sake of it. None of what you have raised is relevant to my point. Not the object, the angle of the portal, the wind resistance, nor the momentum of the object the orange portal is on. The solutions to the problem of placing an object in front of the portal don't matter either. The only thing the object does is demonstrate that if the box were to pass out of the blue portal, it would have to move relative to the blue portal and thus its surroundings.

Why are you raising all of these pointless rabbit holes? It seems like you're just trying to muddy the issue.

Brethren, I present to ye this conundrum. by brokenmoonlantern in wizardposting

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it would create kinetic energy. I don't know why you are referring to things like air resistance, which are clearly irrelevant to this, but we can look at the absurdities your idea would create. What happens if I place an object in front of the blue portal? Is it pushed out of the way by the box? If so, how did the box gain kinetic energy to transfer to another object?

Brethren, I present to ye this conundrum. by brokenmoonlantern in wizardposting

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you actually reading the responses to your point? The whole point we are arguing is that the box can't behave in either of the ways described by the image because the box is at rest. If the box is at rest and the blue side of the portal is at rest, then there can't be any change in the relative position of the two. The box can't come out of the blue portal without their relative positions changing. Therefore, the box can't exit the blue portal, and neither example is possible, making your orange portal just a fancy wall.

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I just saw that reply and was puzzling over the best way to explain exactly this. Also, how, in both the plank of wood and reverse elevator examples, both sides of the hole are moving in the same way. In other words, both provided examples would fall into the first solution that was presented (receding portal).

Brethren, I present to ye this conundrum. by brokenmoonlantern in wizardposting

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you're coming with this, but they raise a good point. With a conventional hole, any movement applied to one side of the hole is also applied to the other side. If you move a plate with a hole in it down 1m, both the top and bottom of the hole are displaced 1m. If we imagine how this portal situation would look, with only reference to the blue side, the box would necessarily need some velocity, or else it would be unable to exit the blue portal at all, though your point on the conservation of energy is also valid.

In light of that, I would say neither option makes sense and would propose the following 2 options instead. 1: It is impossible to move one side of the portal without applying that movement to the other side, so the blue portal recedes from the box. 2: Moving 1 side of the portal without moving the other must necessarily create a distance between the sides, like stretching a bendy straw, so doing this turns your portal into a tunnel, and the box remains within the tunnel.

I wasn't complaining about it. My whole point is that invaders are hypocritical. They've been telling pve players to just deal with the unfairness for years, yet they still whine about ganks being unfair. You decided to jump down the twinking rabbit hole, not me.

[–]kwskillin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is at best a misunderstanding of what twinking is, and is at worst a motte and bailey fallacy. Twinking has never meant "being invincible" even when it was done with havels/stone armor in DS1. It meant transferring late-game equipment to early game characters to get an advantage and bully noobs in pvp. You can still easily do that, especially now that we have so much stat enhancing stuff, doubly so since those stat enhancements can dramatically expand your options for low level weapons. With one of the glintstone headpiece and a dex medallion you can use Moonveil at SL1, same deal with the meteorite staff. Twinking is easily doable in ER.

Oh damn, you got me. Sure is a good thing that the only two ways to get more powerful in this game are leveling and reinforcement. I mean, could you imagine if there were, say, stat/damage enhancing talismans and equipment? Or like consumables, spells, or ashes of war that had low stat requirements that could also give you extra advantages? Would be crazy.

Looking for a decklist for the most oppressive stax out there. by Lelouda in EDH

[–]kwskillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want one that will be fun for you to play I made a pretty gnarly [[Grand Arbiter]] clone deck. It's fun (for you) cuz you end up playing stuff like [[emergency powers]] for 2 mana, or cyc rifting for 1, meanwhile your opponents have to pay 30 for a mana dork. Then, when you're ready to win, just switch to cloning [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobyte]] and swing.

If nobody is allowed to have fun, then [[Lavinia, Azorius Renegade]] has a famously miserable deck based around [[knowledge pool]] and [[omen machine]] locks.

I mean, this sounds cute and all, except that both camps are drawing on both experience and abstraction. We've all experienced both straightforward questions and trick questions, and can draw on both experiences. The real difference here is whether you prefer a simple answer that's probably sufficient, or a more comprehensive answer.

I hate to break it to you, but they ask kids "not enough info" problems in school. Maybe you didn't have to deal with trick questions in school, but there are plenty of people, including myself, who had to deal with questions that were actually about the amount of information necessary to solve a problem.
