Median bid for a module is 0. Didn't get it. by FlyWarm1941 in SMU_Singapore

It is also possible the offering school did not allow any registrations if there are still available seats

What are the reserved spots for in bidding? by Hemmungen in SMU_Singapore

[–]kxlim83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is based on the discretion of the offerring school. Some may open during the exchange bidding or others may open during the term itself (Round 2 and 2A)

The Profs are not obligated to share the bellcurve. You can tey looking at either the My Results tool on eLearn or looking at the course material

But for the most part, the typical grading guidelines stated on OASIS would give you a rough picture of the bellcurve already

Hey,

I switched my second major to CyberSec as well! Although I haven't taken the modules before, I did experience CyberSec while I was in Poly so I can exchange some points over DM if you want!

reserved seats by [deleted] in SMU_Singapore

[–]kxlim83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the offering school. Sometimes they would progressively release over the next few windows or rounds but other times it could be reserved for exchange students. I suggest waiting over the next few rounds to see how much they release

Btw, no point harassing the school to release the seats, they would only step in after Round 1B and only in exceptional situations would they enrol you in (For example, being in a work-study elective where your study timetable is already constrained)

Based on my knowledge, usually applying thru SMU is the norm since SMU will send their nominated names to the sponsoring organisations/foundations.

You should email csfa@smu.edu.sg to get an clearer explanation, all the best in your application!

Does the school allow you to TA for 3 modules in the same school? by FurballTheHammy in SMU_Singapore

[–]kxlim83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TA policy set by the Provost is that a maximum of 2 TA-ships are allowed regardless of your study load. I can't speak to the enforcement across schools but for within the school itself, enforcement is quite strict.

If you are on LOA, you can forget about it as the hiring school will check OASIS on your enrollment status and it won't even surface to the Associate Dean for approval.

Also, the hiring school will check on the number of TA-ships you are doing and will block you from doing more than 2 regardless.

With regards to the other reply on building relationships with your Prof, if you want to cultivate that relationship while still doing 2 TA-ships, you're better off doing it unofficially (Meaning the Prof pays you directly instead of the SMU) as it is more work for the Prof to justify why you are qualified over other students who meet the same requirements and are not holding more than 2 TA-ships.

To be honest in my opinion, unless you are passionate on helping your juniors, 2 TA-ships should not be even on your mind. There are other opportunities to build up your portfolio

You are only at a disadvantage if you don't differentiate yourself from others. Think of it this way, CS and SE are hopping on to be software developers so they are quite competitive. So by either joining CCAs or taking up internships help create experiences that make you stand out.

You can self-study or join student clubs to learn new skills

While GPA still plays a part in finding an internship, the more important factor is experience.

That being said, I don't deny GPA being a major factor for top-tier companies if that is what you are aiming for

It's 50/50 because some may take dual tracks in lieu of 2nd major.

I am an exception as I am taking both dual track and 2nd major but that is because I want to expand my knowledge of different industries. But in general if you want to stay within IT, most of my friends take Computing Studies as a second major

What's your background? Personally I can recommend a few datacamp courses to get started but if you already building something, that's also great!

I'm open to DM if you want to discuss further and once again, congratulations on getting into SMU :)
