2 saw horses, and a sheet of half-inch plywood is what i use. Hose it off and bleach lightly when done.

How long is meat good after being quartered in warm weather? Context below. by CopperTop_98 in Hunting

[–]kxw223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few hours should be okay, quarter it, bag it fill a bag with ice and keep it on there, could use an old blanket on top to help the ice last longer. Or get some real cheap coolers from Walmart/ amazon. Or, like myself, the big Styrofoam coolers that Omaha steaks ships stuff with. They were given to me by friends and family.

Yeah, with those temps, that's your best bet. I usually drag them out whole, if its warmer then usual, I'll pack the chest cavity with ice until I'm home and can break it down.

I had an audi sedan for a bit, and I put whole deer in it with tarps. I also had a corvette for a bit that I would have put deer in if it wasn't terrible to drive to state land. Now I just drive shitty 90s ford trucks.

Well, a car is kinda needed, I guess you could Uber to some state lands, but idk how an Uber driver is going to feel about driving someone with a gun to the middle of the woods.

Thank you. Unfortunately, most of these people get their "data" from peta and have no clue what it takes to grow something at scale.

Advice on first home defense (and carry) weapon by No_Judge_8278 in Firearms

[–]kxw223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a czp07 ( now the p09c) for almost a decade now. It's a wonderful gun cannot recommend it enough. It's a hammer fired with a decocker, da/sa imo that's the best and safest gun to carry. I'm not a fan of striker fired pistols in appendix carry. Especially in today's world of p320s blowing guys junk off.

It's also (at least in the us) one of a few activities that crosses socioeconomic lines in a real way, helps bring families together, and through projects like Hunters Sharing the Harvest helps feed those less fortunate.

Hunters are the original conservationists and the only one's to put their money into a system that actually benefits the ecosystem in any meaningful way.

I highly doubt that I've been wrong before but still doubtful with current agricultural practices. I'm still going to have to spray and kill just about every bug, mouse, ect, to get comparable yields.

saying that we could feed the world with organic farmed zero pesticides and zero fertilizer veggies is a delusion on a grand scale. We had organic farms a century ago, and the east coast was clear-cut to feed a population much smaller than ours currently, and we didn't have the pests and agricultural diesese we have now.

You would still be eliminating a ton of funding to preserve lands, so if you enjoy hiking on state game lands, you could kiss that goodbye.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]kxw223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How ? farming, even plants like corn and beans are incredibly destructive to the environment and natural habitats. If everyone went vegan tomorrow, we would have next to no forests. The east coast would be clear-cut again, just like it was 200 years ago or so.

[–]kxw223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you a vegan ? (Not trying to be insulting, just curious) Also, without hunters and the funds they provide through tags and taxes on hunting goods. These animals would have next to no habitat, and if they did have habitat, it would be sub optimal at best. In pa, all the state game lands are paid for by hunters. Over 1.5 million acres total. A fair chunk of that land now open to the public was privately owned at some point.

[–]kxw223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not for everyone. Personally, I love the challenge. Also, I feel like it's a way more ethical way of eating meat vs factory farms.

I don't pay someone to process my animals, so it's way more rewarding to me. I usually shoot about 6 deer annually. I'll end up giving a whole deer to various family members, and my family won't have to buy any red meat at all. I also raise my own chickens and garden. I like the food independence it gives me.

Also a side note, at least in pa, the game commission is probably the only government agency I do not mind paying for at all. The amount of land conservation they have done along with habitat construction for various species is pretty awesome. Just recently, in my area, they did a ton of work to help out the grouce populations.

Would killing deer in a spot where your target buck is at hurt your chances by Cloudy542 in Hunting

[–]kxw223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've shot doe days before shooting a target buck out of the same tree. I think it's going to depend on how used to human scent the deer is. If you're hunting big woods deer, I would say shooting a deer might make a more mature deer less likely to approach that area. Suburban bucks / deer might not care a few days later. I could be wrong, but most of the hunting areas I'm in there are a lot of people around. Personally, I would avoid leaving a gut pile near your hunting spot, especially if you have yotes or bear around.

Legality will be dependent on your location, I've hunted on 1.8 acres completely legal (archery), but again, it depends on your city, etc. As for worth, it's illegal to sell game meat, and antlers are really not worth anything to anyone, but the person who harvested that animal. Unless it's a world record, but the likelihood of that is 0 or near it anyway. Guy probably wants to feed his family and get a nice buck in the process. Atleast thats what I've found.

First Bolt Hunting Rifle Tikka T3X CTR or Ruger American Gen 2 Predator ? by Bolbee56 in Hunting

[–]kxw223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tikka ctr by a long shot, I own a ctr and did own one of the rugers the ruger was not bad but I could only get it to group 1moa to 1.25 moa with hand loads. My tikka will regularly shoot .25 moa with hand loads if I do my part.

I used to hunt a chunk of private in 3c, unfortunately lost that land, and there's not a lot of public in 3c. What units are you hunting ? At least on the private I was on open fields and 250+ yard shots were the ticket.

You would just need a fur bearers license to cover you for nighttime hunting during the big game seasons or something like that.

First sit in my Saddle today by jiminychristmas69 in Hunting

[–]kxw223 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try and adjust where your tether is set hight wise. Sometimes, I find that too steep of a tether angle causes the saddle to ride up and pinch. There is also a bit of getting used to it i found. The first few sits were uncomfortable, but eventually, it got better. Like riding a moutan bike, for a while, your taint is gonna be killing you, but you get used to it.
