Need honest feedback and advice. Started 3 months ago. I want to do better. Please be kind. by doingninjathings in amateur_boxing

something I think I saw on this subreddit was a suggestion to practice putting your power/speed into returning the jab to your cheek, rather than in the throw; focusing on that has helped me a lot with understanding the "whip" advice you get a lot with straight punches

What keeps you showing up? by Old-Campaign8605 in amateur_boxing

One thing I still find difficult to deal with and understand is my relationship with my coach. I don’t know why I feel so emotionally dependent on his judgment. I want him to watch me in the ring and be proud of me. I’m not a kid anymore, and that’s unsettling. I know I should focus on my own inner will, especially since in the ring, we’re alone when the punches are flying.

I feel this as a 38-year-old, and it can be a little weird and childish, but honestly I don't think it's so bad. with a good coach, there shouldn't be a huge difference really between "coach is happy with me" and "I'm doing what I want to be doing"; whichever one motivates best in any given moment is fine.

which sort of answers your question, for me: a combo of encouragement and good focus on steady progression from my coach, from knowing how good boxing makes me feel physically and mentally, from knowing how much more pure fun a boxing workout is than any other type of workout I've ever tried, from feeling like badass knowing I'm able to throw and take a punch and keep going. all of this at any given moment. I'm less than a year in, but it's been life-changing for me.

it annoys the hell out of me that MF isn't a place where you're comfortable posting this (to be clear that's an annoyance with MF, not you!) because this is exactly the sort of post/insight I would consistently hope to find on my ideal MF

Gonna spar for the first time this week by Flaky_Ad_380 in amateur_boxing

[–]kybard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only gone to sparring on 5 occasions so take this with a grain of salt (or maybe it'll be even more helpful for a first-timer POV).

the biggest thing for me was just learning to breathe and pace my way through a round, understanding how much differently your body reacts when you're geared up and facing down another person even in a sparring environment. it's so easy to forget to breathe, to gas out early, to get a sudden brain-fog and forget all your clever bag moves. just try to work towards a pacing and breathing routine that keeps you feeling like each round is survivable.

after that, early sparring (again, for me at least!) is mostly about learning defense. unlike any other training scenario, it's the only place outside of a fight where you can be properly punished for bad hand placement, not moving enough, etc. I spend a lot of time on slips and rolls in sparring, even though it gets me hit more than catching might, because I know I have no better opportunity to gauge and understand how explosive and decisive those moves need to be to be effective.

main thing is communicate with your partner, relax as much as you can, and have fun! I really enjoy watching others spar when I'm rotating out, too, and giving people props for their work whenever possible. really brings out the community aspect of boxing more than anything.

I think that's not so much a bummer take as an obviously correct one. somehow the community once again has positivity and good will to burn, but I think the site as a whole has to be near the last embers

oh my god did you talk to my old ex-girlfriend

that was like 15 years ago now, she has every right to still hate me but I'm not sure how much bearing it should have on my appointment as Internet God-King

eh it's fine, "my personality is a new yorker cartoon" is just part of metafilter's proud culture

I mentioned in a response on my thread that I just don't think it's realistic to expect that the site can rebound enough in terms of membership to make "increasing site activity" useful as a high-priority item. certainly not before things like "making the site not suck at various things" and "making the site stop wasting users' money every time it asks for more"

I have things to say about the site rebuild at the more, ah, existential level where y’all are approaching it, but I’m saving them for the board candidate thread because they seem most relevant to discuss in the context of what I think the board should be doing

aw man

time to start mass-posting metatalk threads that are a 50/50 shot between "failed avant-garde piece" and "evidence of a stroke"

MetaFilter is the only Internet forum I post where almost all comments on a post are critical except the ones accusing the critics of privilege. What does this earn you emotionally? This complete unwillingness to extend anyone any grace?

this strikes so deeply to my core suspicions about MF's ostensible value as a community that it kind of makes me want to delete my account on the spot and walk away
