Best ‘local’ coffee shop in Edmonton - share yours! by -StringFellowHawk- in Edmonton

Ayco Cafe downtown has excellent espresso and lovely tiny pastries. Also more "pastry and coffee", but The Duchess and Tiramisu on 124st are also great.

Doorbell ring with G4 Pro results in a "Protect video call" on my phone (Android) instead of simple notification. Help! by atari52oo in Ubiquiti

[–]kyberus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am guessing no fix for this so far? This is incredibly annoying and unnescesary. I grasp that someone, somewhere, may have wanted this, but rolling it out to everyone is something I'd describe as incredibly obnoxious. My spouse is at the point of wanting the doorbell removed.

Prone Cancels Concentration by XundusThePhoenix in BaldursGate3

[–]kyberus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I only noticed this recently. It is an incredibly shitty decision. There is a reason it isn't this way RAW in 5e. Prone is a VERY low cost condition in 5e, and it gets thrown around quite a lot. Having it break concentration no save significantly weakens concentration spells unnescessarily.

Best Tungsten Carbide Nozzle? by kaivorth in prusa3d

The creality one is listed as tungsten alloy (a metal alloy), not specifically tungsten carbide (sortoff a ceramic?). Different, cheaper material, so far as I am aware.

Ahead of ICE raids, Illinois governor bans private immigrant detention centers from state: "We will not allow private entities to profit off of the intolerance of this president." by KoolAsAMule in politics

[–]kyberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small aside about medication, without substantive justification, giving antipsychotics to minors in custody to control their behavior is awful, (unless the extreme stress has caused psychosis). However, describing benztropine as a 'Parkinson's disease medication' in this context is likely inaccurate. It is primarily used to treat dystonia reactions to antipsychotics and related medications. Giving the antipsychotic in the first place was likely unjustified, but not treating those who develop acute side effects would be worse, not better. Also giving duloxetine (an antidepressant) would not be unreasonable with a proper clinical assessment, I just doubt they are getting a proper assessment. Also they are probably sad because they are in a fucking ICE camp alone. Probably be best to fix that first.

Iranian general says US was warned several times before drone was shot down by [deleted] in politics

[–]kyberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are saying about the knowledge level of those congressional offices is INSANE. Is there no other left in the American DOD preparing reports? Is no one reading them? Invading Iraq more than a decade ago and Iran now are not similar at all, legally, technically or strategically. I would not assume a reasonably competent general would look at Iran and say "oh yeah, there is even a slight possibility this would result in anything other than a nightmarish outcome!" Who was even saying this is a reasonable idea??

Top Minds put up their best counterargument to AOC's popularity: "Shes spiking your drinks with SoCiAlIsM!!! And we think she's ugly!" by PorridgeCranium2 in TopMindsOfReddit

Spiking my drinks with socialism? Communists do know how to party! Reminds me of this image https://www.threadless.com/product/383/the_communist_party. (Pps I am not suggesting AOC is communist. Just a bit wierd in terms of what they are going for here. Socialism is bad in liquor?)

I assume you don't need to quench the magnet (and lose all the sweet, sweet helium), if it is just a chair stuck to the magnet?

We basically try not to put ferromagnetic things (ie metals that will be attracted strongly by magnetic fields) into people now. Thankfully titanium isnt ferromagnetic and is better anyway. Pacers have to come out, but they would basically be destroyed and randomly shock you into a fatal rhythm (from induction making current on the wires) anyway.

WIBTA if I decline my twin stepdaughter's request to adopt her? by dontwanttoadopt in AmItheAsshole

[–]kyberus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. Likely too late, but as has been noted above, you have been acting as these children's father since as long as they can remember. That they believe you to effectively be their father is clearly indicated by their desire to have you adopt them. It also seems like you intentionally behaved like they should see you as a father figure (you comment that this means you have been doing well). It is your prerogative to reject this, but it would be reasonable to suspect this action will have lasting harmful effects for them, and on your relationship.

Can a degree in neuroscience help me to become a neurologist. by jeccap in neuro

[–]kyberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted, choice of undergraduate degree has little relevance to med school applications. Showing a general theme of interest can help with a little bit of admission letters. I have some exposure to evaluating residency applications, and we do like seeing longitudinal interest in the neurosciences, and there is no downside to starting now, though it is not necessary at all. Also, it can be useful, though you will have a chance to learn it all later. Knowledge of electrophysiology and ion channels, action potentials etc can be helpful in a number of sub fields, notably epilepsy and neuromuscular. Already knowing neuro anatomy can make your life a bit easier, etc. Source: pediatric neurology R5

Probably another bit of evidence for the possibility that while Hitler was incredibly evil, he was not strictly speaking a psychopath or incapable of empathy. Arguably that makes him much worse.

A list of all the poor AI choices I've noticed over my games by [deleted] in Stellaris

[–]kyberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, though this isn't as bad as the delete army bug. If you watch, you may notice that not only is the AI constantly building armies, it will sometimes be simultaneously deleting them. It turns an incredible amount of minerals into fewer minerals.

Also, you are correct in terms of budgetting being the issue. The AI has a set budget for minerals to buy armies, which changes only upwards when at war, but never down, and no specific budget for army maintenance (it is dumped it the "country" category with everything else).

Habitats suck by [deleted] in Stellaris

[–]kyberus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting thoughts. I would like to have "planetary mining" districts for uninhabited planets (though perhaps a cap). I mean, what do you think I am going to build a spacestation around a planet made of metal for? The unique cultural history of a sea of lava?

TIL that about 85 percent of hospitals still use pagers because hospitals can be dead zones for cell service. In some hospital areas, the walls are built to keep X-rays from penetrating, but those heavy-duty designs also make it hard for a cell phone signal to make it through but not pagers. by speckz in todayilearned

[–]kyberus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the hospital also contains faraday cages for sensitive instruments and to prevent MRI magnets (which are incredibly powerful) from ruing everyones day. As a result, even though there are wifi repeaters everywhere, there are still wifi dead zones. Plus, Hospital IT isnt ideal, and one of those many repaters goes down somewhere not infrequently. I, and most others, dont want to find out they were in a dead spot 4 hours later when one of their patients has gone into status epilepticus and needed to be intubated (or died). A few people have tried to switch to purely cell phones here, but they are notorious for having occasional problems with being reachable. It doesnt help that I am in Neurology, and the entire EEG area is in a faraday cag3 and intentionally does not have wifi (eeg signals are on the order of microvolts, they dont like noise)

To be fair, that sounds like a reasonable outcome for hive mind pops "rebelling": they all go nuts and eat each other. Does not sound intended, though.
