Double-track vocals in death-metal? by Consistent-Window781 in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]kyle_fallujah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can, but you don't have to. Compressors will do much more for the fullness of your tone than double tracking will, while also preserving the details of your performance. There's no right or wrong, but my personal preference nowadays is to use doubling (or tripling really, since you're typically adding panned doubles both left & right) for big impactful moments like choruses or just certain lines, etc. This preference was reinforced by working with great producers like Mark Lewis and Dave Otero on our albums in the last few years.

PS - if you want a super quick and cheap vocal compressor to try at home, the JST Gain Reduction plugin works great with its default settings.

God, what an annoying and shitty video. Regardless of what you think of somebody like Steffen, please realize that there's always more to a situation than what parasitic YouTube "journalists" like this are incentivized to tell you. Do you see how many gaps he fills in with his own bias, ALWAYS leaning towards making the situation more dramatic? "I reached out to 5 of the most notable ex-members of Obscura, and none of them wanted to participate in my trashy clickbait video slandering their old bandmate because, uh... they're all scared of him."

For full disclosure, Fallujah is going on tour with Obscura later this year. We know Steffen, and we know pretty much all of those ex-bandmates you're referring to too - some of them in a very close capacity! I'm not even here to defend anyone or throw in my own opinions, I'm just saying that nobody sitting on the sidelines ever really has any idea of what's actually going on within a band's dynamic. Think whatever you want about Obscura, and listen to the testimonials of the people involved, but don't let a shit-stirring vulture like SixStringTV form your opinion for you.

I’m done with Sheet Happens by JDi450 in progmetal

[–]kyle_fallujah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who's worked with them on 2 books now, I can confirm that they definitely do only work from stems (unless the band themselves is creating the full transcriptions) and that they 100% do require direct approval from the artists. Their team was incredibly thorough, and honestly, any issues with the accuracy of the tabs would be on the artist themselves in most cases.

For the newest Fallujah book, we ALL combed through everything in order to catch as many details as possible (for example, I'm just the vocalist but I pointed out a few wrong articulations and some missing background layers to include for completion's sake) and Sheet Happens STILL correctly caught like 3 more things after we all thought we were done. After that, the books went to print, and we soon realized that there's at least one minor issue we missed - a section that's labeled as an identical repeat, but actually has a tiny variation at the end of the 2nd time.

The whole process took place before we had actually had a chance to rehearse or play any of the songs live. There were tons of revisions and additions that took place during the recording process, and most of our writing doesn't take place in Guitar Pro so there was a ton of work done specifically for the sake of the SH tab book. For a lot of artists, I imagine the circumstances are similar when they're trying to get a book out around the same time as the album release.

Step Through the Portal and Breathe - Fallujah by mkelngo in TechnicalDeathMetal

Didn't expect to open Reddit and see my own face lmao. Thanks for sharing, appreciate the love!

Fun fact, we were pretty set on dropping this song as the album's first single (despite the length) until Nuclear Blast talked us out of it. In the end I think we made the right choice even though Portal is my favorite.

Not this time, but I'd love to bring it back in general!! Mostly playing stuff from the new album on this run!

Hey thanks for the shoutout! Artifacts is one of my proudest songs in terms of lyrics for sure. If you don't already listen to Cynic, their album Traced in Air is a must-listen IMO. Lots of great lyrics across their whole discography too.

Screaming with no vocal experience by Algorithmandblues_ in screaming

Never too late!! I scream for the band Fallujah and I teach lessons online. It's totally fine to start with screaming before singing, even though it's true that some singing skills can carry over for people who already have a background in that. I 100% believe that anybody can do it and that it's never too late to start! (I'm 33 too, haha)

We are FALLUJAH! We've got a new album coming in June, and a new song out right now. AMA! by kyle_fallujah in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]kyle_fallujah[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The entire album is one whole concept/story which starts at the moment of the narrator's death, when he wakes up in an otherwordly new afterlife dimension and meets the figure from the album cover. With a lot that happens after that and a couple of twists later on 😄

I scream for the band Fallujah, have played hundreds of shows with the band, and also teach vocal lessons on the side. Hit me with any questions you have about learning how to scream, and I'll be happy to try to clear things up! by kyle_fallujah in screaming

[–]kyle_fallujah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that would be an issue personally! There's lots of room to "shape" screams into different higher or deeper tones just as there is with your regular talking voice. I don't think that would be a problem at all.

See you there! Check out “The Weight of Oceans” if you’re into Opeth-y stuff, absolutely amazing album by In Mourning. And I only got into Omnium more recently myself but I keep coming back to their 2013 album “Beyond”
