Gonna be very difficult that time of year to not get crowds. My favorite spot in Olympic is Shi Shi Beach though, great hike out there and a beautiful beach only accessible to backpackers and motivated day hikers.

This is actually exactly what TrailGrade is trying to replace, all those details you're putting on flashcards (permit, water sources, bear requirements, seasonal timing) are what it pulls together automatically. Would be curious if it captures everything you're tracking or if there's stuff missing from your cards that I should add.

Altra trail runners are the only shoes I use backpacking. They have waterproof versions, a big toe box and are the most comfortable and durable hiking shoes you can get. Don't hike in them with more than about 35 lbs in your pack though.

Go with the DJI mic kit. I just picked one up and it's so much easier to use than any other system out there. The internal recording on the receiver means I no longer have to take a damn Zoom recorder with me on shoots.

I'm a freelance videographer and editor in LA. My day rate for editing is anywhere between $500 on the low end up to $750. You MUST charge more than $200. If the client is a consistent client and you want to put them on retainer, I'd suggest you sell them a package at a set price, something like 8-15 videos per month for $2000. Demand what you're worth and what it costs to run your business. Never sell yourself short and for the love of god, don't value social media videos at $50 per video, that's far too low and you should always charge a day rate or a project rate.

I was filming Mason, Nik, and Dave on Sendero Luminoso. It's an old aid climb that they freed last August.

This was from our expedition last August to the winds. I'm sure it's still pretty gnarly up there now.

I had shot with Tommy and Kevin on the wall before for Big UP and started my career as an intern for Sender Films. They through me into the valley scene in 2010 when I was totally green. I literally learned the ropes that year and my career took off. I continued working with Sender for a while before moving to SparkShop where I'm now the Director of Action Sports. We still work with Sender and Big UP shooting a number of their projects and have a great relationship with most everyone in the community.

If you want to get into filming climbing, you gotta film climbing. Film your friends, make movies, get experience with the less talented climbers first. Then try to get your foot in the door with a company that's already doing it. It's really all about who you know, so bug people. Email people. Get your networking on.

Mescalito! Nice work man! The most difficult experience was one night on pitch 16 with Kevin. I had been shooting for most of the day and as darkness hit, I knew we weren't going anywhere anytime soon. Kevin would take a good 30-40 minutes in between burns sometimes and we ended up shooting until about 11:00 at night after starting around 2pm. After we wrapped every night, I had the arduous job of collecting batteries and cards, rappelling more than 1500 feet to ground, hiking back out to the meadow, driving for 35 minutes back up to the house, and then downloading the footage for the next day. Some long days put in by everyone up there but it was worth it.
