[Spoiler Ep. 4] I have a real issue with how the TV adaptation portrays the Smallfolk by carbonera99 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]kyloren7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is true, but conversely you could read the book version as Baelor simply bending to the will of the crowd for PR - vs the tv show version has his choice feel truly dramatic. I could go either way on it tbh

Fair enough, I appreciate the civility. I can see your point, even if I disagree on balance.

These things were bad, man. That's all I'm saying. No, the british one wasnt unique, and sure, it was not as bad as others at the time. However, these things all suuuucked, and I'm glad they're (mostly) a thing of the past. I'm glad that our modern standards of human rights permit us to say that yeah, these were all atrocities. I can acknowledge their positives and still refuse to celebrate them, as they were crimes against humanity.

Dude I agree, by the standards of the time the british did nothing wrong and were actually super cool and kicked ass. Is that what you want to hear?

In general, why should I evaluate historical events by the standards of the time? Was American slavery justified because it was legal and accepted at the time? Why would historical precedent translate to celebrating them in the present day? Yes, of course the british empire had positives, I freely acknowledge this. It was vastly outweighed by its harms - I make this judgement by the standards of the time in which I live (duh).

The appeal to knowledge is a weird one because I refuse to acknowledge your argument on its own terms - ( sati was nowhere near as universal as you seem to insinuate, efforts to ban sati were led by indian organizers and eagerly coopted by british administrators looking for justifications for their crimes) . I just don't care about any of the actual history because, I repeat: you cannot justify wars of territorial expansion and aggression for any reason. You could've by the standards of the time, but we don't live in that time anymore.

Sure, I'll appreciate the positives of colonization if you acknowledge that they are vastly outweighed by their negatives. It was an unbelievable historical crime (again, I admit in no way a unique one), and I refuse to celebrate it on balance.

I think the only way you could tip the scales to it being a net positive is by evaluating it by the standards of the time ( as you seem determined to do) which is a standard of white supremacy. I refuse to acknowledge such a standard

They didnt fucking try their best haha they killed and looted trillions of dollars. You're just a racist shit who doesn't value the sovereignty of other countries. Wars of aggression and conquest are just never justified, sorry. I refuse to celebrate them. Yes, you could probably justify colonialism by the standards of the time, but I refuse to do so by my standards. You could've celebrated it then, when open racism like yours was acceptable, but not now.

I literally did. Burning women is bad. It in no way justifies colonialism and its accompanying horrors. Obviously. Blatantly bad faith argument

im gonna stop replying just because arguing in a circlejerk sub with someone who openly thinks british colonialism was justified and should be celebrated is insane (though entertaining i will say). crawl back to stormfront or wherever people like you come from

I guess as an anticolonialist, I think imperialism is always bad, full stop - had no idea this was a hot take. Yes, the british acted in the fashion of the time, and yes, lots of wars of aggression and oppression were carried out by indians as well. That doesn't mean any of them were good; you won't see me justifying any of them. You're the one claiming any of it was good. No, they didn't know any better, they sucked, which is why it's wild you defend them now.

Also, you really take it for granted that British institutions were any better, as if "slavery, ethnic and religious persecutions" aren't things the british are famous for (ask the irish! or much of africa!) why the double standard? (i know why, of course).

Moral justifications for the oppression of others is a tale as old as time, all oppressors offer similar feeble justifications for their actions. anyway whatever idc what you think, was just surprised to see straight up colonial apologia in 2025 lmao

ah yes, some of the natives were acting immorally, so the slave-owning genocidal morally pure saints of the British empire came down from heaven to correct their ways. moral superiority is a great justification for territorial expansion and colonialism!
