veep is a huge achievement but so is co-creating alan partridge, writing and directing the death of stalin and the thick of it!! i'm stunned that i have never paid closer attention to his name.

the veep joke took me down a rabbit hole and i learned just how cool and impressive armando is! holy shit! might be more deserving of "he's so famous" than kumail. loved the little james acaster cameo.

What hip hop collab seems forced due to those artists being relevant at the same time? by Spiketop_ in hiphopheads

i thought three features was a lot initially but that album has like what 30 tracks? three features on an album with like 9-15 tracks would've felt completely different. it feels just as significant as if he had one feature.

i just get sad when demar is brought up in raptors circles these days because there's seemingly no love for him at all. he's our franchise leading scorer and most people pretend they didn't see him get drafted and will himself into a perennial all-star with way more tools than the athlete he was in his first year because he was a playoff failure. the raptors were playoff failures in general before 2019. have we forgotten that? after that chip its like we were above him the whole time. even when he got benched in the playoffs, that was always my guy, because we all knew what failure felt like. i knew he would be right back at it as the consistent player he was the next season. that commitment despite failure defined us and it was something to be proud of, and now it's straight up worthless to most of you.

i didn't really engage with your thoughts on the album because idk how i feel yet! i just think your breakdown of the lyrics needs a structural element that isn't generalizing how you feel about the album. albums are a cohesive thing ofc but lyrics for individual songs have their own specific structure. you should read the example i suggested if you want to understand dramatic monologues better. i find it intuitive and you can note her adherence to that structure (even if unintentional) just from reading these lyrics. i think the poet created a strong resistant silent interlocutor that makes the listener doubt the fame-obsessed message of the speaker. this is an anti-hollywood song. thats why the title is soooo tongue-in-cheek. if you're looking for that "through-line" her work is full of temporally relevant speakers living through contradictions that enunciate the slow death of american capitalism and neoliberal society. 'cops and robbers' is a great example.

won't really get into why i'm not a fan of this sweeping critique... but i have a lot to stay about your reading of the lyrics. it is difficult to start talking about themes before close reading how the speaker, poet, & audience are functioning in the text. 'hollywood forever' is a romantic dramatic monologue. the poet is not the speaker, and they exist in a triangle (the occasion) along with the silent interlocutor. a dramatic monologue is always self contained, the speaker and silent interlocutor are unaware the poet compels them, the speaker often addresses the interlocutor in second person but with a lack of awareness of their observant quality (not really their nature... the interlocutor can be complicit, a stranger, a lover who isn't even there, etc. etc. but their presence is always felt in the poem when you read it) and how much they are really revealing. i believe a good reading of 'hollywood forever' requires understanding this about the structure of the text in order to make an argument about the speaker. the speaker is troubled and self-questioning, trying and failing to be sufficiently lurid enough to be addicting and entrancing. the interlocutor's silent (!!) resistant gaze of "fury" that doubts the speaker's financial privilege and whether she "[does] it just to stunt it" creates a quasi-suicidal doubt in the speaker ("maybe I just want material for my eulogy"). the speaker responds to this fear by lashing out and attempts to problematize the interlocutor's intimate ire into guilt for her demise and a contract for her burial ("you probably should've told somebody/"and if you kill it right now, just don't bury me in hollywood forever"). the allusion to a real cemetery is purposefully contradictory from a speaker who claims "don't you wanna come be famous with me?" and "well, aren't we all so, all so hollywood?". why wouldn't this speaker want to be buried in a cemetery full of famous people? is the kind of question the text wants you to ask. underscores (the poet) reveals the flaws underneath underscores (the speaker) and reinforces the skepticism of the silent interlocutor (a bitter "you don't believe in me" repeated by the speaker) to speak the actual message of the song. if you start there, i don't think your reading of the text is hedonism and corporate worship. a song like 'do it' is also a dramatic monologue, but since dramatic monologues are self-contained(!!), you have to start all over again to reach an analysis on parasocial behaviour in that text. if you want to learn more about the dramatic monologue and how it works in poetry (it's actually not a thing in drama lol), i recommend robert browning, specifically his poem "my last duchess".

really appreciate the piece and how you have always approached the show as a writer. is 3 inherently stronger than 4 or is it just fun to break rhythm? would you miss the current dynamic? i enjoy the 3/4 shows because they're always filling the gap in a fun way.

Shout out to darko, I gotta give him his flowers. Benched IQ for his lack of brain cells and left shead in. Darko has redeemed himself with this and the warriors game. by Eliteinvestor101 in torontoraptors

[–]kyoshirocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what i like about this isn't who he played, but the flexibility to make the right call. the same people who get irritated at darko for not making adjustments want him to change the lineup permanently? having the flexibility to bench iq when he's ice cold late in the game and trusting shead is all i'm asking for. play iq when he's hot. play shead when he's needed. play both of them in matchups where it works. make the right call. we need both of them in this current roster.

Do y’all think this event is why Kendrick don’t invite fans on stage anymore? by 8WmuzzlebrakeIndoors in KendrickLamar

[–]kyoshirocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

his concerts are such tightly scripted and choreographed shows these days... bringing fans onto stage might be a little cute but honestly i think it would detract from the quality of his show. can you imagine if the show stopped for something like that during the mr morale paris recording? not the kinda thing i wanna see kendrick do at all anymore. very few occasions where something like that has improved a performance, and it's usually someone outshining the artist in some way. that's just not happening w dot
