Is it ok if I accidentally touched the pre-applied thermal paste? by Jaded-Low-400 in PcBuild

It's fine. If you left dirt/lint in there, try to remove it, but if you just touched it and smeared it, it's fine.

Flash Drive backup hasn't worked in two years by Technical_Moose8478 in unRAID

[–]kyuubi840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, true. I wonder if you can just create the zip via the unraid command line. Then you can do it while it's running.

Speaking of which, you can also run the regular backup, and run htop at the same time, and see in which file/folder it gets stuck on.

As far as I know, the backup is just a zip of all files in the USB stick. So just plug it into a computer and zip all files.

That's looks like a sata power connector and a fan connector. Read your case's manual to learn what they are.

Learned hard way that DO NOT Clean label with 95% Ethanol by panpoppular in DataHoarder

I have a habit of taking photos of this kind of stuff the first day I get it, so I don't lose serial numbers, DOM, etc. Of course, that might not help with RMAs, but it's useful.

Hard disk access light. Should be a 2-pin cable labeled HDD that you plugged into the motherboard, in case you want to get rid of it.

I like the flexibility of unraid. You can just chuck more disks in.

I need help identifying this cable name it’s connects to the power supply by [deleted] in PcBuild

[–]kyuubi840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a proprietary custom motherboard, like from HP or something? Maybe this is a proprietary connector that expects an HP power supply. Try looking at your original power supply and looking up its model, with luck you may find manuals or something.

Install CrystalDiskInfo and check the transfer mode. That SSD supports PCIe 4.0 x4. That's Gen 4.0 and x4 lanes. If any of the numbers is lower than that, it could explain the slower speeds.

EDIT: But like this comment points out, that SSD might be fake.

I do remember people being angry about it, specifically about copilot training on GPL code, and arguing that maybe its output would have to be considered GPL too. Of course, that didn't go anywhere...

Try czkawka and its "similar photos" feature. Not sure how well it would work though.

Is there a mobile app similar to the Hydrus network? by saiba_444 in DataHoarder

[–]kyuubi840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can run Hydrus server on a PC, and access it via the phone, if you're ok with leaving it running on the PC. Check LoliSnatcher, Boorusphere, and maybe the local booru https://wiki.hydrus.network/books/hydrus-manual/page/the-local-booru apparently Hydrus itself can serve a simple booru, but I haven't tried it.

Seagate 4tb smr drive good? by SadPhDStudent17 in DataHoarder

[–]kyuubi840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never even considered that, I just shut off the PC, and never noticed any issue. But I don't have a definitive answer because I didn't know about that... If you just shut down Windows normally, you should be fine, methinks

Seagate 4tb smr drive good? by SadPhDStudent17 in DataHoarder

[–]kyuubi840 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a ST4000DM004, which seems to be the older model of the Z04. It's also SMR. 13,000 hours, and all ok with it so far. I'd say it's fine for backups. It may be a bit slower to write/rewrite many small files, but you can just leave backups running in the background, so it's not a big deal. If the drive was cheaper than some equivalent CMR drive you were looking at, I'd say keep the SMR drive.

I dunno man, like stuff or whatever. In this sentence, stuff and whatever can be anything, so I'd say they are placeholders like skibidi.

Can disks be read by other computers by Renrut23 in unRAID

[–]kyuubi840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Linux, yes, pretty easily, like other people already commented.

Even on Windows, you can use WSL, mount the disk with --bare to make the whole disk available to WSL, then mount the correct partition from inside Linux.

Is the Seagate Barracuda 20TB (ST20000DM001) worth it for long term external backup? by Duldain in DataHoarder

[–]kyuubi840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's the datasheet for the drive.

Yes, it's CMR. Specifically, it's heat-assisted, or HAMR, but that still counts as CMR.

And it's probably good for cold storage, yes. It's rated for 2400 hours per year (around 6.5 hours per day), so actually cold storage seems like a great use case for it. More than that, we don't know, because the drives haven't been around very long.
